Though we are surrounded by many great happen-

is experiencing is a declining enrollment pattern. Our
latest demographic study presented to the Board of
Education in January shows that over the next five
years SCESD is expected to lose over 600 students.
This disheartening news ultimately means a signifi-
cant loss in revenue. However, I believe together we
can counteract this news by ensuring all
families, friends and neighbors know that

gram and positive learning environment
to all students.

What brought me to SCESD was the ability to work
with children and families again after teaching psy-
chiatric mental health nursing at Hartnell College.

spired on a daily basis?

These amazing families who get their children to
school through good times and bad. We have a 97%
attendance rate! I also work with inspirational staff
who try their best to provide a quality education and
life experience for the children and their families.

THE UPDATE

GLRT Visitations: Thank you to all of the grade levels that I’ve had a pleasure of visiting to observe the Data

Teams process! As a friendly reminder the purpose is to 1) serve as a coach to site admin, 2) see first hand what is work-
ing well, and 3) observe the use of data to identify student-learning needs to provide differentiated instruction.

English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC):

The ELPAC window opens on February 1, 2018 – May 25, 2018. The district has hired ELPAC testers to administer
the one-on-one components. The group testing is to be administered by the designated ELD classroom teacher.
Calendar/schedule to be forthcoming and will vary from site to site. Since this is a new state assessment much will
be learned as we administer it. With this said, we thank you in advance for your flexibility!

Vice-Principals will be trained in administering the ELPAC group testing on Tuesday, January 29, 2018. Vice Princi-
pals in turn will be training their site designated ELD teachers in the following weeks, TBD because it will vary from
site to site.

ELPAC Practice Tests are now posted on the ELPAC Web site www.elpac.org. The ELPAC Practice Tests give students,
parents and families, teachers, and administrators an opportunity to become familiar with the types of test ques-
tions on the ELPAC in preparation for the ELPAC SA window, which opens on February 1, 2018. The Practice Tests
include examples of all of the types of test questions that may appear on the actual SA at each grade level or grade
span. We hope you will find them useful as you prepare for the administration of the ELPAC.

Grade 5 PFT (Physical Fitness Test): Please have your students start practicing on their mile walk/jog/

run, push-ups, sit-ups, etc., at least six weeks prior to testing in order to be compliant with the PFT (Physical Fitness Test)
recommendation. PFT administration window closes on May 18, 2018.

Grade 5 CAST (CA Science Test) and CAA (CA Alternate Assessment) for Science:

The 2017–18 CAST field test is a full-census administration for all eligible students in grades five. Students will not

receive scores for the field test; however, student participation data will be collected and reported for accountability.

The CAST consists of stand-alone items and performance tasks (PTs) and will take approximately two hours to ad-
minister.

The CAA for Science includes three embedded PTs to be administered one-on-one by a trained test examiner.

Local educational agencies (LEAs) will administer the computer-based CAST field test beginning on April 2, 2018,
through the LEA’s selected testing window or last day of instruction.

CAST Blueprint Now Available! The California Science Test (CAST) blueprint, documenting how the CAST is con-
structed as well as the alignment between the CAST and the California Next Generation Science Standards, is now
available at www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/ca/documents/castblueprint.pdf

CAST Training Test and Scoring Guide - The training test provides sample CAST items for grades five, while the
scoring guide provides answers and scoring rubrics to items. They are located on the CAASPP Online Practice and
Training Portal.

success. Classes began in September and so

basic computer skills. Classes will continue
