The Eamify Quilt
The Kisslinrr, KroeIl, Trach-86-Extended Family as-Friends- Newsletter
Spring 2005 edition
Welcome to the eleventh edition of the Family Quilt Newsletter!
"VV
Dedicated with Loving Memory of Dorathy Rose Kisslinger Kroell
and all the other loving family 86 friends who have gone before us.
"VV
Very sadly we recently lost two wonderful family members: Mary Ann Klarl
Schatzle and Joseph Schindler Sr. Both gave us a lot of love and
compassion. They will be remembered always with the same love they gave.
Much of this-issue-is dedicated to them.
We also have some happy occasions to share including three new babies on the
way and some original poetry inside. (see back cover for table of contents)
Mary Ann Klarl Schatzle Joseph Schindler Sr.
Eulogy for Mary Ann by Sister Anne
'CRWRIUSEIP NEMBESREZNIk
There is never an easy time to say goodbye to those we love, because all of our memories are
wrapped around them and that is certainly how it should be, because there is no doubt, that
Maryann loved you dearly and continues to do so in ways beyond imagining or defining. As
much as I wish otherwise, I do not have any magic words to heal your broken hearts. I can only
believe with all my heart that because of her faith, Maryann no longer has to believe; she is
experiencing the reality of Paul's words "Eye has not seen, ear has not heard, nor has any
intellect begun to comprehend the wonders and the beauty that God has prepared for those who
love him." We, as Christians, must be convinced of this reality because we know that although
we are completely devastated by this loss, God alone holds the Master plan, He alone knows the
depth of our love and the pain of our loss, and He alone has the power to heal our broken hearts.
There are no simple answers to the reason for this plan, but we must trust the God who gave
Maryann to us, and we must believe that He will, in the end, do only what is best for us.
Every one of us endured the pain of loss and we know that every separation we endure; every
time we surrender a loved one back to the creator we send a piece of ourselves with the person.
Maryann takes so many wonderful memories on her journey — memories of her family and
friends and yet, remarkably, they remain with us as well. Death for us, is a temporary separation
from body, from friends, from the world, but Christ has made it just the opposite. It is a meeting
and for this meeting He has arranged every detail in our lives. I believe that they have been
called HOME by our God; that is what it is for those we love — a homecoming — where so many
of Maryann's loved ones are standing on that opposite shore of glory peering through the mist
and waiting to say, "Welcome home"!
Those who have never loved can never feel pain and those who have loved deeply are never
quite the same again. Maryann loved every one of you and she loves you still. Love endures
beyond this painful point; it is stronger than death; it destroys death itself and replaces it with the
totality of God. Your wife, and your mom, your sister and your friend mirrors the words of
Jesus: "I am the Resurrections and the life; whoever believes in me even if she dies will have
eternal life; she who eats my flesh and drinks my blood will have life everlasting; death then, is a
transition time, one brief moment, one last step on the journey to the Author of life. As a wife, a
mother, grandmother, relative and friends she is echoing the words of Jesus for you now. "Do
not let your hearts be troubled — have faith in God and faith in me. I have gone forth to prepare a
place for you, then I'll come back, to take you with me, so that where I am you may also be."
Maryann was a gentle person who never thought of herself first but rather, her thoughts were
always directed to what she could do to make life easier for those who needed her. She was truly
a homemaker and Danny, you and the girls were at the center of her life. Thank God she has
almost 24 years of such wonderful love to surround her — love Danny that you gave so willingly
and so completely to her and to Stephanie and Mary Beth. She had a deep abiding faith and so
often I would speak to her briefly after the 7 O'clock Mass and she was always so gracious and
so pleasant. I can never forget her gentle influence on my life over these many years and her
friendship meant a great deal to me as does your Danny. We should always thank God for the
persons He placed in our path for we know and believe with all our hearts that their influence
and love lives on in us.
2
I have been very consoled at the time of my greatest losses, by the words of a German mystic
theologist Meister Eckhart, when asked, "where do the souls of the dead go?" he replied, NO
PLACE because there is no spatial reality with God. So, never hesitate to call Maryann to the
present because she is already here." I believe that for all of us who have surrendered loved ones
to the Father, they are standing here with us, at this very moment, encouraging us, holding us,
loving us through this painful time. Their passing should make us long for God just that much
more. Believe with all your hearts, that Maryann who broke bread at the table of her family, is
now, breaking bread, still with her family, at the table of life. Maryann has awakened in the
arms of God where there is no more pain or suffering — only unbelievable love and joy and the
unlimited ability to share in our personal journey toward eternal life. Her death should make us
realize that life is so precious — every moment is a gift and we should always be prepared, for we
do not know the day or the hour when the Lord will call us home. HOME is the reality for
Maryann now. She is experiencing the greatest love the world has ever known and she will share
that love with you in many ways, as you journey to her Father and to her.
I am confident that Maryann's loved ones, especially her mom and dad and I have no doubt,
Sister Grace, came with God to meet her. She will surely do the same for you, when your time
comes to be welcomed home. She is standing with you now trying to assure you that all is well
and that she will be with you always — waiting for that time when she will come with God to
meet you and share with you the promise of eternal life. A mom and dad and grandparents give
us two precious gifts in life — roots and wings — they encourage us to always remember the good
times and they challenge us to be the best that we can be. They urge to us to hold fast to the
memories of faith and family and friendship. Your wife, mom, grandmother, sister and friend is
standing with you now and is asking that you continue to love one another — to treasure the
moments you share with one another — and to always remember that she waits for you — as do all
your loved ones — and So then, let us long for the ones who are longing for us — let us hasten to
the ones who are waiting for us and — let us be assured that as they wait and long, they are
praying for us.
We pray for Maryann who was so near and dear to us and who has now been taken from us; we
thank You Father for the friendship that went out from her and for the peace she brought; we
pray that nothing of her life will be lost but that it will be of benefit to the world and everything
in which she was great will continue to mean much to us — now that she is with You. We pray
she will go on living in her loved ones — in their minds and in their hearts — in their courage and
conscience — and we pray that we who were associated with her may be ever more closely
associated with each other.
Creator God, I ask you to lovingly receive Maryann's soul.. .forgive whatever sins she may have
committed in this world and reward her for the goodness of her life. Continue to assure us of her
love, of Your love of Your promise to be faithful to us always but especially when we walk
through the valley of the shadow of death. For you have said, I am the resurrection and the life —
whoever believes in me even if she dies will live forever and I will raise her up to be with me
and those she loves. We pray for those whom Maryann leaves behind in the world. May they
continue to walk in your footsteps and to continue their own personal quest for the kingdom of
God and the salvation of their souls. Let us remind one another that we are companions on the
3
journey to the Father and as companions we are called upon to bolster one another's courage, to
bear one another's pain and to share one another's joy, and so for Maryann and for ourselves, we
pray Our Father...
Maryann, though your life rises like incense before Almighty God, may your spirit return to us
with the assurance that you have found Him. We know that the bonds of love that we have
shared with you in this world will never be broken; we believe that we will see you again and we
pray that your live for us, deeper and richer than we ever dreamed possible will flow into our
hearts and bring us peace. Maryann, may eternal light shine upon you in the land where life is
changed, not ended. May you see our God as He is and gaze upon the loveliness of his face.
May you join the angels and the saints in their continual song of praise and thanksgiving and
may your souls and the souls of all who have fallen asleep believing in the love of Christ Jesus,
rest in peace, Amen.

To a Beloved Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Sister, Cousin, Aunt and Friend
There are so many words I could try to say to you to let you know how much you mean to me
and our family. So many stories and precious memories to share. Your gracious acts of
kindness, love, support, and friendship have touched all our lives in a very special way. You've
always had a talent of knowing exactly what to do and what to say to make things better. There
have been so many times when you were the only one who understood me and you were the only
one who could help. You've never hesitated to provide me with the love, confidence and support
that I needed. You were always there for me, no matter how may miles away I was.
You were a devoted, loving wife who took care of her husband hen he was sick. You took the
train down every morning to visit dad at Mt. Sinai, brought Dad the newspaper and special gifts
each visit to make him feel better. You both were always by each others side when you needed
each other the most. Mary Beth and I are forever grateful and blessed to witness and share in the
special love that two people have for one another.
Mary Beth and I are very proud to call you our Mother. There could not have been a better role
model or inspiration in our live. You were strong, resilient, honest, and you persevered. When
times were bad, you pulled yourself through; but you always made sure your girls were taken
care of first. You taught us to be strong, proud, and independent. We hope that we continue to
make you proud of us and we are forever proud of you.
You were a wonderful Grandmother who loved to play games and make special treats for
Miranda. Miranda loved Grandma's scrambled eggs and egg salad sandwiches. Miranda always
enjoyed her sleepovers, jumping up and down on your bed, and tying Grandpa up with rope; but
she never understood why you didn't sleep over at her house. She loved coming to see you at
Filene's (which usually meant a trip to Kay Bee's). Miranda had the privilege of receiving your
first quilt. You left Miranda with many lasting memories but the most special are the 2 books,
which were completed before she was born — The Grandmothers Memory book (which you
added many additional photos and special touches to) and the Journal you completed for her. It
started the day Mary Beth told you she was pregnant and ended the day Miranda was born
(October 4, 1999). You filled the Journal with your daily thoughts and wrote about all the plans
you had for Miranda as she grew older. I am sorry that you are no longer here to carry our all
your plans but we will make sure that are taken of.
You were a wonder sister and sister-in-law. I always found the stories of you and Uncle Jai
growing up very amusing — one of my favorites was when you both were teenagers and out later
then you were supposed to be. Mom saw the bathroom light on which meant Grandma was
getting ready for work. So you went to wait on the patio for Grandma to leave. When you got to
the patio you found Uncle Jai waiting there as well. You both asked each other "Hey, what are
you doing here?" Seem like you both had the same idea. I can't express how happy Mom was
to see her brother in April 2004. She was overcome with joy and happiness. When we first
found out that Mom was sick, she told me that GOD had brought her brother to her then for a
special reason. I guess she was right.
Everyone loved their cousin and Aunt Mary Ann for all the special things that she did. So many
people had wanted to see you in the hospital; but you didn't want to be remembered like that and
you didn't want people to see you in any pain. So instead everyone sent cards, emails, made
delicious dinners and said hundreds of prayers for you. Together Mary Beth and myself saved
all the cards and emails and were in the process of putting a scrapbook together for you to read
when you felt better; instead we will place all the correspondence in your bible.
You were a Great Friend and Terrific Neighbor to so many people. You were always there when
someone needed you. You would always put the needs of your friends before yourself providing
them with comfort, care and support. You have given so much of yourself and never expected
anything in return. I remember the day you called me and said that Pat and Everett had bought
their house in FL. You were so sad that your best friends were leaving and said the Regency
Drive would never be the same again.
I don't remember you taking too many vacations or trips (unless it was to Atlantic City — one of
you favorite places to go). You would be talking about your trips to the casino for weeks and
laugh about the good times you had. It didn't matter if you won or lost money — it was the
company of Dad, John and Joanne that you enjoyed the most. You would go on an on talking
about the car trip down and all the silly games you played. You made each person their own
"goodie" bag that consisted of egg sandwiches on fresh bagels, snapples, candy, gum and mints.
You enjoyed relaxing in the hotel room with Joanne drinking your 7 & 7. You would go
searching for Dad in the casino so you could steal some coins from his bucket because your were
all gone. No matter where Dad hid, you always found him and he always shared his winnings
with you.
You will always be remembered for you hospitality and for being one of the best hostesses. Just
like Grandma, you were able to "whip" up incredible meals within minutes. You always made
sure everyone was happy. You wouldn't sit down until everyone else was served (and when you
did sit down — it wasn't for very long). Everyone loved to come by the house for any kind of
party or gathering that would be going on. They knew they would be greeted by delicious food,
great company, hear funny stories, have their picture taken a million times, and always leave
with a smile on their face. You would bring out your camera and start taking unexpected
surprise pictures of everyone and then we'd start with the Birthday pictures. Sometimes people
might try and hide when their month was called out; but you always managed to get at least one
picture of everyone who was at the party, even if they didn't want their picture taken. You took
such great pride in your pictures and immediately placed them in a photo album and always
made sure you had doubles to share with the family.
I always felt so sad that you had to work so hard and long for so many years (just like Grandpa in
the bakery). Then again, if you were not working — what would you do? For anyone who knew
you, they knew that you could not sit still for longer than five minutes. You always had to be
doing something otherwise you would be bored.
That is when your hobbies and talents really came out. I remember you saying, "Well Grandma,
Aunt Rose, Aunt Anshie and Aunt Alice always used to crochet and if they could so could I. I
remember the night we went to Rita's with a huge garbage bag of colorful, tangled up assorted
scans of yarn. "Here Rita — teach me to crochet". As she tried to show you and you were not
counting your stitches (instead decided you would "eyeball" it) you quickly lost your patience
and insisted that Rita start you off with your blanket and you would finish it. With Rita's help
your first blanket was done in time for Mary Beth's 30th birthday. You were so proud of what
you had accomplished and Mary Beth was equally proud to receive such a beautiful gift. You
continued on with your special crocheting talent making baby blankets, bridal shower gifts, and
blankets for no special reason — just because someone was special to you. Then you became
bored — AGAIN. That's when your remarkable quilting talents came in. For someone who
could never sewed before, you always had the perfect 1/4" squares sewen together. You put so
much love and thought into each quilt from designing the colors, to picking out the material, and
having someone special in mind. The workmanship and volume of quilts you made would make
someone think you had been doing them your whole life — not just 6 years. You often got ahead
of yourself and had 2 to 3 quilts started at the same time. I know you were worried about your
unfinished quilts — Mary Beth has promised to see Holly and have them finished off.
Grandpa's linzer tarts cookies won't taste the same without your loving hands preparing the
dough. I will continue on with our traditional Christmas cookies, and I promise I will not put too
much jelly in the middle. I know I can always call on Aunt Joan or Rosalie for their help. They
all know your cookies had to be the perfect little bite size with the perfect amount of powered
sugar, and very few sprinldes.
When I looked through your special bible over the past couple of days, I found the most truly
beautiful cards, emails, photos and un-cashed checks from your children. You always said that
someday when you die whoever went through your bible would find some very special things —
and you were right. I do not have the strength right now to look through everything — but rest
assured your bible is very sacred and will be treasured.
My dear sister MaryAnn,
Thank you for being in my life, and thank you for caring for me so much.
I am so thankful that I went to New York to visit you last April, as our
connection strengthened and sweetened. And what a party you had for me
— cousins from four states - what an honor and blessing.
As I write this my eyes are watering - feeling the connection of family -
feeling their goodness — and feeling your love.
Blessings to you in Spirit...
your brother Roger ()ai)

This past New Year's Eve, we visited MaryAnn and Dan. When we arrived MaryAnn was
sitting in the living room and she greeted us with a big smile. She looked great, sporting her new
"cool" haircut. She joked that her earrings made all the difference. She looked so comfy in her
long, soft, pink bathrobe. We laughed, shared inside jokes and stories, and like always, just
enjoyed each other's company.
However, this wasn't the close of any year. This marked the end of a year in which we had all
received the devastating news that MaryAnn was seriously ill. It was like each of us had been
speared through the heart. But, here she was finding humor in even the most serious of
circumstances.
We all hoped and prayed that Mary Ann would come through her treatment and be well again,
although we realized the severity of her situation. We wanted to ring-in future New Years with
her, but that was not to be. January would be a difficult month for MaryAnn, and sadly, that was
all the time we would have with her.
MaryAnn was such an important part of our lives. She was wonderful and giving to all of us.
She was far more than a cousin; she was like a sister to us. MaryAnn had a wonderful, unique
relationship with our children. She was more than generous and caring. She was always there
for them. They all loved MaryAnn and she loved and cared about each of them immensely and
she showed them that. She always called to check on them if they were sick or troubled and was
always there to share in their happy moments and accomplishments
There were frequent calls to and from MaryAnn just to "catch up"; certainly every Saturday
or Sunday morning (very often both). This often led to an invitation to stop by for a "bite-to-
eat". Despite our pleas for her not to go to any trouble, MaryAnn always did and always treated
us to a delicious meal (usually with many courses!!!) As everyone knows, MaryAnn was a
wonderful hostess and everyone was made to feel welcome and comfortable in her home.
It is difficult to describe the void that is left in our lives by MaryAnn's passing. We still find
it hard to believe that she is not here with us. We think about her everyday and our lives are not
the same, but MaryAnn would want us to remember her with smiles and that is what we try to
do. We know that MaryAnn lives on in Dan, Stephanie, Mary Beth and Miranda whom she was
so very proud of.
MaryAnn, thank you for all you did for us.
We love you and will miss you always.

Thoughts of Mary Ann
MEMORIES ...
In the Bronx, our families all lived in the same house (tri-plex), - Mary Ann, Jai (Roger), Carol
and I.
In those 'good ol' days', our neighbor had 2 daughters (my age and MaryAnn's), and 2 sons (one
was Jai's (Roger's) age and an older boy).. .so we had our best friends living next door, and one
of the games we all liked to play was" Cowboys and Indians " (we even had a tree house —
remember Jai?). And some Sunday mornings, the three of us - Mary Ann, Jai (Roger) and I
would get the funnies and lay on Aunt Hilda's kitchen floor listening to the man on the radio
read us those same funnies.
Then Aunt Hilda and Uncle Joe moved the family to a 'far away' place called Peekskill. Aunt
Hilda and Uncle Joe opened a bakery (Manna's) with Anchie and Louie Kisslinger; the 'bakery'
made it even more fun to visit! We even went to Lake Secor with them. Mary Ann's 16th
birthday party was at the Harmony' — and most of the Kisslinger's and Klarl's were
there...Peekskill brought the Kisslinger families and the Klanl families together.
Soon after, I moved to California with my sister and parents; Mary Ann and I kept in touch via
the mail, and periodically I visited N.Y.
Then without warning : we all grew up. Her babies, Mary Beth and Stephanie, meant everything
to her! (On one of their vacations, Aunt Hilda and Uncle Joe brought the little girls to California
(in the 70's, I think) to meet the West Coast Klarl's (including my children).
Again 'without warning' God took Mary Ann 'home'. Mary Ann was love, caring, respect, truth,
honesty and humility — she set a wonderful example for 'all of us' to follow. Some of her
'happiest' moments were when she could make someone else happy and when the family was all
together, (not to mention Willy, ha)... like the 'quilts' she made (with love), every individual had
a special gift and she brought it out .As the saying goes, "Grow old along with me, the best is yet
to be..." well, MaryAnn has found the 'best' in God's heavenly kingdom where she is with her
beloved family and friends, — we all have to wait.

Eulogy to My Father Joe Schindler
About 15 years ago, while vacationing in Arizona, my father had his first heart attack. Because
of this incident, I begin having a discussion with myself, about how my father would be
remembered. This internal dialog continued over several years. At first I thought:
Being a husband, which he was for 58 years
Being a father, which he was for 57 years
Being a electrician, which he was for 20 years
Being a veteran, which he was
Being a friend and coworker, which he was to many
However this third Voice started talking to me and saying, "Joe it is in his name" I was not sure
what the Voice meant. At first:
I considered the historical references to Joe, Joseph, Jose. There were many but none of them
seemed to fit my father.
The Voice said again, "Joe it is in his name".
This time I considered the biblical reference to Joe or Joseph. Again there were many but none
seemed to fit my father.
The Voice said again even louder this time, "JOE, IT IS IN HIS NAME".
Again I pondered his name. As it turns out he was known by many names, such as:
Joey by his wife
Dad by his sons
Joe or Dad by his daughters in laws
Grandpa by his grandchildren
Grarnpi by his great-grandchildren
Uncle Joe by his nephews, nieces, and cousins. Some even called him "Uncle Choey"
Joey by his sister and sister in law
Mr. Schindler by the many people he lived, work and met during his 84 years.
There were so many, but I could not come to a conclusion that made sense.
Then one day I heard one of his grandchildren call him "Grandpa, I want to show you
something". I knew then what the Voice in my head was telling me. It wasn't so much his name;
as how his name was said. I thought back on the many times I heard his name spoken. Each and
every time it was said with respect, affection, gentleness and love.
So, my father will be remembered for the person he was every time his name is spoken. Respect.
Gentleness. Affection. Love

AMEIMENEM
WE REMEMBER JOE SCHINDLER
Joe grew up in lower Manhattan. When he was a teenager his family moved to Queens and
opened a deli. He did all their deliveries.
Joe went into the Army in 1942 and was stationed in Iran and the liberation of France.
My sister Gertrude first met Joe at a German American Ball at the Yorkville Casino in New
York City in 1946. It was love at first sight for Gertrude.
The next day Gertrude told our grandmother that she met a nice fellow, Joseph Schindler. My
grandmother told her that the Schindler family came over on the same ship as the Kisslingers,
our family, and lived in the same town in Austria.
Joe didn't call my sister for two weeks. She was a little upset. He finally called and they dated
every Saturday thereafter. Joe came in an Army surplus jeep and he came in the same plaid shirt
every week. I spied out the window and teased Gertrude, HERE COMES THE SHIRT.
Gertrude and Joe married the following year and moved up to Valley Cottage, a remote town in
New York State. As a New York City girl she was very lonesome. Every Friday night Joe came
home from work and drove her to the city for the weekend. He never complained. This went on
until Joe, Jr. was born, plus a dog and six puppies. My Mom and Dad and I were thrilled to have
them. We waited with open arms to hold Joey Jr. our first baby in the family. This continued
until Edmund was born and Gertrude finally got use to living in the country. All this time Joe
never objected to coming back to New York City to make my sister happy.
In 1970, John, my first husband died. Joe was so good to me. He fixed anything that needed
repair in my home. Also in my Mom's house too.
Joe and Gertrude bought a camper and he welcomed me, Andrea, Lisa and Laura to vacation
with them for two weeks. We went to the Great Smokey Mts., Arcadia National Park,
Shenandoah National Park and Montauk Point. Can you imagine that he spent his two weeks
vacation with all of us? Frank's children, Linda, Christine, Roberta and Frankie loved him. He
was their uncle Joey too.
Joe in all the 60 years that I knew him never said an unkind work about anyone. He was the
perfect husband, father, uncle and my brother-in-law.
Joe has one granddaughter and five grandsons and four great grandchildren. At his Mass in New
York his 5 grandsons brought up the gifts for communion. He would have been so proud.
May you join the angels and saints and may your soul and all the souls of our deceased relatives
rest in Peace.

WE REMEMBER JOE SCHINDLER
My Uncle Joe
By Andrea Kern
Uncle Joe was the nearest and dearest to my heart. He was my favorite uncle and my second
father.... Always there to help when you could not do something or when something broke, he
always figured it out. He had patience. Something I do not have. He was never annoyed, never
lost his temper and was the easiest going and gentle man in the world.
Growing up I know I was his favorite girl, ...but second only to Aunt Gertrude. The last time I
saw him he told me that Gertrude was his one and only and she was #1 but I was #2. What was
he going to say? I was always kidding him about that and he loved the attention. Uncle Joe
looked at Aunt Gertrude with such love in his eyes. They both had such unconditional love for
one another.
I am relieved that he is at peace now and that he has passed on because he tried so hard to keep
up but his body failed him in the end. As my grandmother used to say, "the works wear out". I
was lucky enough to spend quality time with him for the last four years of his life and perhaps
give back in some small way all the love that he gave me over my entire life.
My favorite story about Aunt Gert and Uncle Joe is when we went camping in the Appalachians.
Uncle Joe took our family on vacations and schlepped us all over in his camper. On the way to
our destination we saw a sign about a place that has a big swimming pool and a big water slide.
The place on the poster looked so terrific — I had to go. After much ado, we agreed to go.
Uncle Joe was pulling the camper with his car. We kept seeing more signs that said — follow the
signs to Doe River Gore Camp Grounds. We certainly did ... over one mountain around another
and after 25 miles on small windy road we finally reached Doe River Gore Camp Grounds. I
just could not wait to get there and get in that pool! There was such anticipation — we could not
wait to get there. We were so happy to finally arrive after two hours of driving. When we got
out of the call and finally gazed on Doe River Gore I was aghast!
Much to my disappointment, it was a big mud hole. It had about four inches of water in the
hole. I was so upset because I could not go on the big plunging slide into the pool.
Aunt Gert, Uncle Joe and my mom laughed so hard — it was not funny. Uncle Joe did not even
flinch ... he never yelled he just laughed. I can still see the slide on top of the campground roof
and I was so hot and so buggy and I was not happy at all.
And all they did was laugh.
I will miss my Uncle Joe. He was the Best.
We all were so blessed to have him in our lives.
'3
MY PAL JOEY
Although I have only known Joey for 33 years I considered him my dear friend.
We took our wives to Florida and flew into Jacksonville where we rented a car.
We toured down central Florida, the left coast and up the right coast. Going through the
Everglades with the auto windows open a bird flew in missing everyone and hit the back
window. I stopped the car and Gertrude, Joan and I jumped out. Joe went into the back seat and
got the bird. It was badly damaged and Joe put it out of its misery.
My other Florida story that I will always remember is that Joe loved fishing. We would go deep-
sea fishing together on the Safari. He also loved fishing in front of the condo. One time he saw
a fellow catching so many fish. He assumed that he found a spot where there was lots of good
fishing. He grabbed his fishing equipment and went down next to the fellow. He was casting
out, but didn't catch a fish. I sent Lisa and Andrea down and told them to make a big fuss over
Joe. The fellow stopped fishing and couldn't help but envy him.

My memories of Joe
My memories of Joe go way back to a summer drive I took with my girlfriend (Barbara)
to Valley Cottage. She had suggested that I meet her cousin Gertrude and her husband Joe.
From the start they were both most gracious and made me feel right at home. I remember when
they built their house in Congers and their wonderful backyard parties ( I still have some
pictures). Gertrude providing lots to eat and Joe making sure we had plenty to drink. As the
party would wind down, us guys would retire to a spot under a tree in the yard and play a few
hands of poker. This was repeated many times over the years with all the relatives; at Joe's,
Louie's backyard, Aunt Rose's kitchen and as I recall also at the Harmony.
Joe was an astute card player and I don't remember him ever being a loser. We all just
enjoyed each others company. I believe the last time we played cards together was at Andrea's
up in Washington, CT. I remember it was me, Joe, Frank, Ed Kelly and Kevin. We all had a
good time.
Barbara and I will miss Joe very much.

People's Passions
George and Lasca Kisslinger followed their passion for the theatre and acted in a
play at Actors Theatre of Louisville. The Gin Game was the name of the play - a
funny and touching story of two nursing home residents who overcome their pasts
and form a special bond of friendship. They had 30 performances during the month
of February and played nursing home residents (no speaking just "human props").
The following appeared in the playbill:
George Kisslinger (Nursing Home Resident) returns to Actors Theatre, having
played Junior in Lighting Up The Two-Year Old in 1997. Since retiring in 1992, Mr.
Kisslinger has been active with Actors Associates. He feels the most exciting and
rewarding time to be at Actors is during the Humana Festival.
Lasca Kisslinger (Nursing Home Resident) is making her debut at Actors Theatre.
She is a long time subscriber and donor, and has served three years on the Actors
Associates Board. Gracing the Actors stage and experiencing the other side of the
footlights is a dream come true.
They had plenty of family and friends in the audience and they received several
standing ovations!!!
Normally their theatre volunteering includes apprentice & volunteer coordination,
crew feedings, and helping the actors (especially if they're from New York!) with
transportation & hospitality and just bringing their friendly energy and exuberant
personalities to the Theatre.
Both are theatre aficionados following their passions.
George Kisslinger, celebrated his 75th birthday March 23rd

His wife and all three daughters (Lasca Gail, Evelyn and Amy) were there to
celebrate with him. They had a party at Evelyn's, where they displayed several old
pictures on the big screen T. V. - Enjoying good memories past and looking
forward to many great memories to come.

Happy Birthday Lillian
My mom, Lillian Kelly, is celebrating a big birthday on May 27th, number 75.
I am not as good a storyteller as some of my relatives are but I want Ma to know how much she
has meant to me and will continue to mean to me.
She has always believed in me and been my biggest fan... .until Nicholas was born!! He bumped
me to 2nd!!
Her extended family has also been extremely important to her. The stories about Lake Secor are
always fun to hear. Having grown up in Lake Secor, I would walk around the neighborhood
wondering what it must have been like to have so many relatives within blocks of each other.
That must have been a blast!
Mom has instilled in me the same feelings. Although life has a lot of us further apart then when
she was young, I care strongly about my family members and I think of them often.
My mother was always fully committed to her work. While Deirdre & I were still in high school
she had a job with the Village of Ossining but with a schedule that allowed her to be home when
we got off the bus. As we grew older she became more involved in her work, which included
becoming President of her Civil Service union. If you know my mother, she could argue and
haggle with the best of them and get her points across.
In the last 10+ years she has become a loving grandmother to Wendi, Brad & Nicholas. She
loves them unconditionally and they can do NO wrong!! She is a terrific Grandma!
Mom has had some medical issues over the last few years that have been tough. She has battled
Lyme Disease, arthritis and breast cancer but never let them get her down. Each battle she fought
head on and is winning. At 75 years old she is still exercising regularly, dancing, going to movies
with the cousins and screaming at Pop!!
Mom, I love you very much. The impact you have on my life cannot possibly be summed up in a
few paragraphs but you know how much you mean to me.
Enjoy your special day!!
Love always,
Kevin, Julie & Nicholas

I 1Happy Birthday Lillian
Happy 75th birthday to my beautiful Mom, Lillian !!
Mom will be turning 75 on May 27th. It is hard to believe if you look at her and listen to her. She
is not only an "American Beauty" on the outside, but what comes from within her is a clear
indication that each year only adds more wisdom and knowledge to her life.. .and takes nothing
away from her that she can't handle.
Mom doesn't spend her time worrying about tomorrow. (She feels that that is energy wasted.)
Instead she always says that "God promises us today" and she is deeply thankful for that. She
knows that exercise, good nutrition and being a positive thinker keep her strong, physically and
spiritually. Her amazing attitude allows her to be the outstanding and devoted wife, mother and
grandmother that she is. Mom regularly (in her words) "tunes in on our antennas", checks in and
makes sure we are all OK.. .(which of course we are, but she has to hear it for herself). She
must know every small detail about the happenings of her greatest treasures
(her grandbabies)...from every boo-boo and sniffle to the date and time of the next ball game,
school event, or dance recital (Mom goes to almost everything !!!!!), both in Connecticut and
Florida.
Mom celebrates each day of her life as a supportive spouse, a proud mother and mother-in-law,
and especially a grandmother (of three "perfect" grandchildren...Wendi, Brad and Nicholas).
Mom has a unique and generous heart. She gives us the gift of her time.. .ALWAYS ! She is
never too busy to talk, listen, even sit and watch the children while they are at the computer
(how exciting is that ???? The kids aren't even talking, but Mom is still enjoying them.. imagine
that !!!!)
Mom's deep love is unconditional. She loves us so much that she truly believes whatever we do
is right (OK, Ma...one of these days maybe you will realize that just can not be TRUE !!! We are
human and we make lots of mistakes!! CONSTANTLY !!Stop thinking we are PERFECT !!!) She
remains in our corners, even when she shouldn't. She just doesn't want to argue with her
kids... Growing up, Mom was known at school as the "monster mother"..the lioness ever
protective of her cubs.( I must admit.. .as a mother, now I understand all of this !!!) Mom's motto
has always been "Do what you want to me, but don't mess with my kids".. .and now
DEFINITELY don't mess with my grandkids lint"
In addition to her immediate family, all of Mom's cousins mean so much to her and she takes
great pride in her heritage. She is honored to belong to such a loving and supportive family and
"tunes in on many of these antennas" as well. Each family member is dear to Mom and has a
special place in her heart. She not only speaks lovingly of the cousins she visits with frequently,
but also those who live far away. Distance does not get in the way of how much YOU all mean
to her.
Each day when I think of my mother, a smile always follows. Because of her love, I am a
privileged daughter. I know it now and I have always felt it.. .a feeling of security knowing that I
have been blessed with the mother who is meant for me.
I Love you, Mom !!! Happy, Happy Birthday !!!!

We were ten years old when we met. She was the new girl who moved up from the City. She
was walking along West Way, in Lake Secor. We (myself, a friend my age and my brother Jack
who was only seven) were playing kickball in the yard. We did need a fourth to balance out the
teams. I asked her if she would like to play. We put her on the team with my younger brother.
Well it wasn't too fair, but Janet was always a good athlete. I don't remember the score but I
think she made up for Jack's youth.
That was the start of it. She lived two houses away. We became fast friends — having fun,
enjoying adventures and yes, at times getting into trouble together. I'd like to write more about
the "trouble" part — it may be the most interesting — but this is a family publication. Never any
serious trouble — but kind of fun to look back at it.
We enjoyed hanging out at the lake, at the Goody Shop, and at Cross Roads. We ate lots of ice
cream and drank egg creams and lime rickeys. We sang and danced and "hung out" together.
We played softball, hide and seek in the evening, built forts in the woods.... We were cool — so
we thought, anyway. And we were tomboys — which I always appreciated — because you got to
have the best of both worlds. Today we don't have the same divide between boys and girls —
girls participate in sports much more — etc.
We played and ate at each other's house often. Even when we weren't having dinner together
Janet would come call for me after supper. The ongoing joke was: no matter what time we ate —
Janet always arrived just in time for dessert. She had an uncanny knack for that. Good timing.
I was honored to be her bridesmaid and watch her and John's love grow as well as their family
grow. Janet was there when Aimee was born. Her oldest, Debbie, was Aimee's age — so we got
to "grow up" doing kiddie things together.
I may have said this before, but it bears repeating. The morning after my mother's funeral, we
were all sitting around stunned and Janet showed up with Bagels & stuff. It was so significant to
me. Someone who really understood me. A friend who knew my pain. A simple act of loving
kindness, with profound impact. Yes, Janet knew how I felt. She had lost her own wonderful
mother. And she really knew my mother, too, for 50 years. I remember my mother wrote in
Janet's birthday book one year - how at one time Janet was just her daughter's friend and how
now she thinks of Janet as her friend, too.
A long term friendship — It's the best. I treasure Janet and want to wish her ...
a very Happy 60th Birthday
Love, Linda

Stitching the Quilt
We hope all friends and family are well and enjoying Spring!
This has been another busy year in our family and we thank God for giving us the stamina
and strength to keep up with everything. We feel very blessed.
Our oldest daughter, Emily will be graduating from the College of the Holy Cross on May 27th
with a double major in child studies and psychology and an art minor. She was just accepted
into the Jesuit Volunteers International and will be doing her volunteer service in the Marshall
Islands for the next 2 years, teaching in the Assumption School on the island of Majuro. She
has wanted to do volunteer service since she was a 5th grader and this is her chance. The
Marshall Islands are in the central Pacific, between Hawaii and Australia, a 17 hour time
difference! She will have an orientation in the US at the end of July, and leave at the beginning
of August. This is an exciting time for her. Hopefully we will be able to make a trip after she has
been there a year.. .we won't be able to see her until after she has completed a year of service. I
know she would love correspondence from friends and family, so when I have that information I
will send it out.
Julia, our second daughter is now immersed as a sophomore at Cornell University after
transferring there in January from Ithaca College. She is studying environmental and biological
engineering. The work load is intense, students work really hard, but she loves it there. She is
also continuing to play her oboe in the Cornell Chamber Orchestra. She is so happy to be a
"Cornellian."
Chris will have his Confirmation on April 27th and is looking forward to a trip to Cologne,
Germany for World Youth Day this August. World Youth Day was started by Pope John Paul II.
Chris was hoping to see him there, but instead this will be a memorial tribute to Pope John Paul
II and he will have the opportunity to see the new Pope. We have also started looking at
colleges since he will be a senior next year. So, here we go again! Chris is hoping to
participate in a 2 week summer program at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in engineering which
will help with the decision-making process.
Arielle continues to be a busy 7th grader. She recently auditioned for the Western District
Band and was successful, making the first flute section. We are convinced that playing the flute
has really helped her asthma since she has had no flare-ups in quite a while. I will be a class
chaperone on an upcoming field trip to the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and the UN. I'm so
excited (maybe more than the kids- I jump at any chance to get to NYC)!
And Jamie and I are thankful to have good health to be able to keep up with everything and
everybody. We stay busy with our jobs also. Mine has become quite hectic since our nursing
department has become short staffed due to the death of one of our nurses, a resignation of
another, and an extended sick leave of a third. I've been working extra to help keep up, and it
usually is enjoyable work. I will be in my first horse show on April 24th! I took up riding again
just about a year and a half ago and have stuck with it.. .my teacher insisted I participate in the
show so I will be riding with 2 other women in a class. I'm having fun and happy to stay on the
horse!
