Early Childhood Screening

What is Early Childhood Screening?

Early Childhood Screening (ECS) is a FREE developmental
screening required for all preschool-age children by the State
of Minnesota. It includes a developmental screening and a
vision, hearing, height, weight and immunization review.
Early childhood developmental screening helps a school
district identify children who may benefit from district and
community resources available to help in their development.
Early childhood developmental screening includes a vision
screening that helps detect potential eye problems but is not a
substitute for a comprehensive eye exam.
ECS is required for every child entering kindergarten. In order
for your child to start kindergarten in any Minnesota public
school, you will need to provide proof of ECS.

Time for Screening? Key Information:

• Screening is held on Tuesdays and a few Mondays during the Early Childhood Screening
school year. If you do not receive a letter with an appointment or
are new to the community and not on the school census, please
call our message line at 952-232-3000 #3.

• Appointments are for parent and child together and take
approximately 45 – 60 minutes.

• Screening is held at Crystal Lake Education Center, 16250 Ipava
Ave.

• You will receive a summary sheet and the forms will be sent to
your child’s elementary school before entering kindergarten.

Small Wonders School of Science

Young children are naturally curious explorers who are
eager to discover information about the world around
them. Children learn scientific concepts by exploring
observing and investigating materials and ideas. These
experiences provide the foundation for abstract and
scientific thought. Science concepts are encompassed
throughout the key areas of early learning; for example,
children use pretend play to explore and manipulate
materials, creative arts to discover a variety of
ways to express their ideas, and literacy and language
arts to research answers to questions.

Kid Zone School Age Care & Enrichment School Age Care
About Kid Zone

Kid Zone is a before and after-school program which
provides care and enrichment opportunities to children in
kindergarten through 5th grade. Kid Zone is offered at each
elementary school and provides activities on regular school
days as well as all-day programming on most non-school
days, such as teacher workshop days, winter break, etc.
The Kid Zone program is divided into two different
sessions. The before-school session begins at 6:30 am and
operates until the school day begins. Children have a wide
variety of activities to choose from including arts/crafts,
gym games, computer lab, weekly themes, projects and
hands-on learning centers. Parents can purchase a healthy breakfast for their child through the district’s breakfast
program.
During the after-school session, children may join in indoor/outdoor games, recreational events, homework help
and enjoy an after-school snack. The after-school session begins at dismissal time and is open until 6:00 pm.
Both before and after-school sessions offer a balance of fun and learning.
Depending on each child’s needs, families can enroll in one or both sessions. For more information, scheduling
options and registration materials, call 952-232-2154.
