Welcome to Your Rancho Mirage Library
and Observatory

Over the next three months, the Library and Observatory calendar is filled with a variety of terrific
programs to suit all interests. We strive to ensure an exciting, high-quality lineup of lifelong learning
opportunities and cultural experiences by showcasing new presenters and performers, bringing back
old favorites, and working with local partner organizations.

March 25 marks two years since the opening of our community observatory and is followed up in
April by two other important astronomy-related anniversaries. On April 13, we’ll celebrate the 50th
anniversary of the Apollo 13 mission with a double-feature film screening. And on April 24 we
will be celebrating 30 years of operation for the Hubble Space Telescope as Rancho Mirage has
been selected as an official unveiling location for the very special 30th anniversary image, which will
remain on display at the Library and Observatory! If you haven’t already, be sure to sign up for our
e-newsletter for updates on this exciting event.

Additional Highlights

• The Library is going fine free! Check out page 4 to learn more about why we made this
important decision and how it will affect you.

• Enjoy two terrific feature-length documentary screenings that include an in-person discussion
with the filmmaker! Iconicity, highlighting local artists, will be followed by a Q&A with
director Leo Zahn on March 25, and on April 8, we’ll screen the award-wining film The
Woman Who Loves Giraffes followed by a Q&A with director Alison Reid and the film’s
inspiring subject, Dr. Anne Innis Dagg (page 14).

• Idyllwild Arts Academy returns to the Library on March 4 for a night of fashion-inspired
music, theatre, dance, and much more (page 16).

• Celebrate Earth Day with the whole family on April 22 by making a desert tortoise herb planter
and learning more about this local endangered species with a special film screening (page 23).

It’s important to us that we keep the great programs like those found in this guide free and available to
everyone in our community—doing so, however, can be expensive. If you regularly attend and enjoy
our programming, consider sponsoring a specific program or donating to the Rancho Mirage Library
and Observatory Foundation. If you’d like to learn how you can help, or easily donate online, visit
ranchomiragelibrary.org

We thank you for your support and look forward to seeing you soon!

Wave Goodbye to Late Fees. We’re Going Fine Free!

The Rancho Mirage Library and Observatory is always striving to improve our services and
offer more to the community. As many libraries have begun to do across the country, we
evaluated our policies on fines—and what they do to our patrons. Fines are supposed to
encourage the timely return of materials, but they have not had that effect. Instead, fines have
created a barrier that stops people from being able to use our resources. In many cases, these are
the people who need our resources the most. The City of Rancho Mirage created this facility
and has continued to encourage its growth to help others pursue lifelong learning. In following
that directive, the Rancho Mirage Library and Observatory will be eliminating fines.
This does not mean that patrons can simply check out materials and never bring them back.
It means that an item that is a day or two late is not a big deal. Because an item that is a day
or two late is not a big deal.
If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact Operations Manager Bob
Rekuc at 760-341-7323 or [email protected].

Coachella Valley Storytellers Project
Wednesday, March 11, 7 pm
The California desert is vast and the stories it holds are innumerable. Join The Desert Sun and
our partner, the University of California Riverside-Palm Desert graduate program for creative
writing and writing for the performing arts, for a night dedicated to those living in the desert
and the stories they hold about it.

By creating a space where neighbors and
notables can share first-person stories,
this project explores the importance of
the personal narrative as a means for
connection. As Americans identify in
increasingly complex ways religiously,
racially, and culturally, there’s a growing
appetite for sharing, and hearing
individual stories with universal themes
and lessons. Admission is free.

Eric Wagner • After the Blast: The
Ecological Recovery of Mount St. Helens
Thursday, March 19, 10–11:30 am
On May 18, 1980, people all over the world watched
with awe and horror as Mount St. Helens erupted. Fifty-
seven people were killed, and hundreds of square miles
of what had been lush forests and wild rivers were, to all
appearances, destroyed.
Ecologists thought they would have to wait years, or
even decades, for life to return to the mountain, but
when forest scientist Jerry Franklin helicoptered into
the blast area a couple of weeks after the eruption, he
found small plants bursting through the ash and animals
skittering over the ground. Stunned, he realized he and
his colleagues had been thinking of the volcano in a completely wrong way. Rather than being
a dead zone, the mountain was very much alive.
Mount St. Helens has been surprising ecologists ever since, and in After the Blast, Eric Wagner
takes readers on a fascinating journey through the blast area and beyond. From fireweed to
elk, the plants and animals Franklin saw would not just change how ecologists approached
the eruption and its landscape, but also prompt them to think in new ways about how life
responds in the face of seemingly total devastation.

This lecture is presented in partnership with the University of Washington Libraries and UW Press.

Gary Powers Jr. • Spy Pilot: Francis Gary Powers, the U-2 Incident,
and a Controversial Cold War Legacy
Friday, March 20, 2–3 pm
The son of famed U-2 pilot Francis Gary Powers presents the facts and
dispels misinformation about the Cold War espionage program that
turned his father into a Cold War icon. One of the most talked-about
events of the Cold War was the downing of an American U-2 spy plane
over the Soviet Union on May 1, 1960 (recently depicted in the the
Steven Spielberg movie Bridge of Spies). Powers was captured by the
KGB, subjected to a televised show trial, and imprisoned—all of which
created an international incident. Soviet authorities eventually released
him in exchange for captured Soviet spy Rudolf Abel. On his return
to the United States, Powers was exonerated of any wrongdoing while
imprisoned in Russia, yet, due to bad press and the government’s unwillingness to heartily
defend Powers, a cloud of controversy lingered until his untimely death in 1977. Hear about
a son’s journey to understand his father, pursuing justice and a measure of peace. Almost
sixty years after the fact, Gary Powers Jr.’s new book, written with acclaimed historian Keith
Dunnavant, is the definitive account of one of the most important events of the Cold War.

Steven J. Osterlind • How We Learned to Measure Uncertainty
Tuesday, March 24, 2–3 pm

Nowadays, the microchip, GPS, and AI (artificial intelligence) are part
of our daily lives. They form our worldview and perspective and even
influence what we think of ourselves. How did these inventions begin?
And, who developed their underlying mathematics? Remarkably, their
invention arose within a relatively short period of history: about a 120-
year period (beginning in the nineteenth century to about the start of
WWI). Even more surprising is the fact that most of this work was
accomplished by just a few individuals, fewer than 100 extraordinary
men and women. The Error of Truth tells their story—who they are and
how this amazing period of history gave impetus to their development.
Professor Steven J. Osterlind is Emeritus Professor (Measurement & Statistics), University of
Missouri where he served for 32 years as a distinguished professor and dean. He has over 200
academic publications to his name, including five books.

Aimee Byard • Peninsular Bighorn Sheep in the Coachella Valley
Thursday, March 26, 2–3 pm
The endangered peninsular bighorn sheep in the Coachella Valley are
uniquely adapted to live in our harsh desert environment. They have
dealt with some unique adversities, but through the efforts of Bighorn
Institute and the wildlife agencies, recovery is currently underway.
This presentation will discuss the life history and recovery of this
iconic desert species. Aimee Byard has been a biologist for Bighorn
Institute for 19 years and also serves as the Institute’s Associate
Director. She is passionate about the plight of the peninsular bighorn
and is dedicated to their conservation and recovery.

Stanley Jaffe with Peter Bart • The Incredible
Career Adventures of Stanley Jaffe
Tuesday, March 31, 2–3 pm
Rancho Mirage resident Stanley Jaffe has had quite a career! After
beginning with Seven Arts Productions, he quickly rose through the
ranks in Hollywood producing Goodbye, Columbus (1969), before
being named president at Paramount Pictures Corporation in 1970
at just 29 years old. He then went on to form an independent
production company which produced Bad Company (1972) and The
Bad News Bears (1976) before being named executive vice president
of worldwide production at Columbia Pictures. He helmed several
major productions including Kramer vs. Kramer (1979), which won
the Academy Award for best picture; Taps (1981), which helped launch the career of Matt
Damon; The Accused (1988) for which Jody Foster won an Academy Award; Black Rain (1989);
and Fatal Attraction (1987). In 1991 he rejoined Paramount becoming president and chief
operation officer of Paramount Communications. In addition to his work in film, Jaffe also
played a major role in the success of Paramount’s theme parks and of Madison Square Garden-
based sports franchises where he was Governor of the New York Rangers and New York Knicks,
helping to assemble the 1994 Rangers team that won the Stanley Cup for the first time in 53
years. Stanley will be joined on stage by his friend, fellow Hollywood icon Peter Bart, for a
lively discussion featuring terrific stories and highlights from his incredible career.

Dr. Laurie Marker • 30 Years of Cheetah Conservation
Monday, April 6, 2–3 pm
Dr. Laurie Marker, Founder and Executive Director of Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF), is
a conservation biologist recognized as one of the world’s leading cheetah experts. In 1990, Dr.
Marker left her role as Executive Director of NOAHS
Center at the Smithsonian Institution and relocated to
Namibia. Her rigorous research, creative conservation
programs, and holistic philosophy gained her the respect
of the nation and other cheetah range countries. In
2020, CCF celebrates its 30th anniversary. Today, CCF
is a world-class research institution on a 143,000-acre
integrated wildlife-livestock reserve. Currently, Dr.
Marker is working in Somaliland to stop the illegal
wildlife trade in cheetah cubs. In this stop on her 2020
tour, Dr. Marker will highlight how CCF has helped to
stabilize the cheetah population in Namibia and in other
cheetah range areas to secure the species in the wild.

This lecture is presented in partnership with The Living Desert
Zoo and Gardens.

Dr. Don Liponi • La Rumorosa Rock Art Along the Border
Tuesday, April 7, 2–3 pm
Dr. Don Liponi has studied rock art for the past 50 years under the tutorage of such legendary
teachers as Bob Begole, Michael Kelsey and Fran Barnes. Dr. Liponi lamented around 10 years
ago: “because I could only visit Utah or Arizona on vacations, out of desperation I realized
that there was a huge vacuum in Kumeyaay-Patayan archaeology and rock art right in my own
neighborhood, in particular Southern California, Southwestern Arizona and Northern Baja.”
Don proceeded to organize a group of more than 50 professionals, Native Americans and
avocationalists to recover the rock art of these “lost cultures.” The outcome has been elaborated
in two books highlighting these images. Dr. Liponi will discuss his work and delve into the
origins and meanings of these incredible works of art.

Samantha Paris • Finding the Bunny
Tuesday, April 28, 2–3 pm
The world of voice acting is fascinating yet little-known. As a multi-billion dollar industry, it
can be considered “America’s most influential and invisible art.” Meet Rancho Mirage’s own
Samantha Paris, award-winning voice actor, educator, and author, who has trained more than
10,000 aspiring and working voice actors (in the Bay Area and
the desert) through her academy, Voicetrax San Francisco—
which is the nation’s largest and most comprehensive voice
acting school. She will share insights and inspiration from
her acclaimed memoir, which has just been optioned by
Warner Brothers for development into a television series!
Find out why this top-tier studio was so fascinated by the
real-life stories of Samantha and her Voicetrax students—
who represent all walks of life and backgrounds—that they
want to bring this story to life on the screen. This engrossing
and entertaining presentation will feature Samantha and
other voice actors, including the desert’s Patti Gribow, who
will perform excerpts from her memoir, and share snippets of
the revolutionary audiobook that is in production.

Iconicity • Screening and Q&A
with Director Leo Zahn
Wednesday, March 25, 7 pm

Iconicity is a voyage into a surprising frontier for creative
expression—the Southern California deserts. Fringe
communities of artists and radicals thrive amidst the
wide open, lawless spaces of North America’s driest
desert. In a brutal land of dust, rust, and concrete, some
explore new worlds while others delve into their own
darkness, drawing seemingly limitless inspiration from
their surroundings. This road trip takes us beyond the
reaches of civilization to places that exist out of time.

We are treated to in-depth looks at work as diverse
as Leonard Knight’s “Salvation Mountain” in the
squatter outpost of Slab City, Noah Purifoy’s political

The Woman Who Loves Giraffes • Screening and Q&A with Director
Alison Reid and Dr. Anne Innis Dagg

Wednesday, April 8, 7 pm

In 1956, four years before Jane Goodall ventured into the world of chimpanzees and seven
years before Dian Fossey left to work with mountain gorillas, 23-year-old biologist Anne
Innis Dagg made an unprecedented solo journey to South Africa to study giraffes in the
wild. In The Woman Who Loves Giraffes, Anne
(now 86) retraces her steps, and, with letters and
stunning, original 16mm film footage, offers
an intimate window into her life as a young
woman, juxtaposed with a firsthand look at the
devastating reality that giraffes are facing today.
Both the world’s first ‘giraffologist,’ whose research
findings ultimately became the foundation for
many scientists following in her footsteps, and the
species she loves have each experienced triumphs
as well as setbacks. The Woman Who Loves Giraffes
gives us a moving perspective on both. Following
the screening, Director Alison Reid and the
subject of the film, Dr. Anne Innis Dagg, will take
the stage to discuss the film and answer audience
questions before being joined by a panel of zoology
and conservation experts from around the world
in what is sure to be a fascinating and illuminating
discussion.

The Heat is On: Desert Tortoises and Survival
Wednesday, April 22, 7 pm
The Heat is On: Desert Tortoises and Survival is a short documentary exploring the world of
the Mojave Desert Tortoise. It highlights the USGS research program on the Desert Tortoise
and the role of that research in managing desert environments to allow the species to recover
and escape the threat of extinction. The program was produced jointly by the USGS Western
Ecological Research Center (www.werc.usgs.gov) in cooperation with the US Fish and Wildlife
Service, Desert Tortoise Recovery Office. Following the screening, a panel of experts from the
US Fish and Wildlife Service and The Living Desert will discuss the threats continuing to
impact the Desert Tortoise and take questions from those in attendance. Guests will also have
a chance to meet some live tortoise ambassadors from The Living Desert!

This program is presented in partnership with The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens.

When Is the Next Stargazing Party?
Our philosophy for hosting our popular Stargazing Parties is to maximize the variety of
astronomical objects we can share with the public. With that in mind, we typically schedule
the events surrounding the time of the month when the phase of the Moon is new. This means
that the Moon is between the Earth and the Sun and isn’t illuminated from our perspective
here on Earth. With no light from the Moon to interfere, we’re able to target dimmer objects
and bring you the most fascinating views possible. Keep an eye out for the next Stargazing
Party registration email approximately two weeks before the next new Moon. You can join
our email list by visiting our website at ranchomiragelibrary.org.

Swoon @ the Moon!

Please join us at the Observatory to view the
Moon in its first quarter phase. We’ll meet at

view the terminator—where light meets dark.

Voyager: The Grand Tour
Thursday, March 12, 7 pm
Once every 175 years the outer planets reach a specific
configuration to allow a spacecraft to visit all of them using
mainly the power of gravity. The last time such a journey
was possible was in the late 1970s and 80s. Fortunately,
humanity’s knowledge and capability allowed us to send
two robotic spacecraft on this interplanetary trek. Voyager
1 and 2 may have taken different routes after Saturn, but
both provided new insights into the solar system, our place
in it, and what lies beyond it.

Apollo 13 50th Anniversary Double Feature
Wednesday, April 15, 6 pm & 7 pm

As this April marks the 50th anniversary of the harrowing flight and successful return of the
Apollo 13 mission, we would like to remember this mission with dramatic retellings showing
two different perspectives of the event. Beginning with From the Earth to the Moon “We
Interrupt This Program” at 6 pm we explore how the media covered and sensationalized the
events of the mission. At 7 pm we will show the classic film Apollo 13. Directed by Ron
Howard, this docudrama film recounts in great detail the tense events of the mission.

Space Station: Humanity’s Laboratory
in the Sky
Thursday, May 7, 7 pm
On certain evenings and mornings, a bright and
shining light can be seen cruising across the sky.
Reflecting light from the Sun, the International Space
Station can at times rival Venus in competition to be
the second brightest object in the night sky. Of course,
this orbiting laboratory is far more than a pretty light,
it is home to a variety of groundbreaking research
projects. Now, as humans once again aim to fly from
American soil to space, it is worthwhile to review one
of their first destinations beyond the atmosphere.

Permanent Exhibit Highlight:
The Joe and GiGi Roberson Mineral Collection
How could anything as plain as a “rock” be so beautiful inside? That question was answered
for me in 1963, when I made my first visit to California and to a rock shop in Riverside. There
I saw my first Brazilian banded agate set of bookends, and carefully carried them back to my
home in St. Louis. Every subsequent trip to California resulted in a new set of agate bookends
until I had more bookends than books. But by this time, however, I was “hooked” on rocks.
My interest continued when I moved to California in 1970, and grew even more when a good
friend invited my wife, GiGi, and me to Tucson, Arizona, to the National Gem and Mineral
Show in 1980. We haven’t missed the annual show in February for over 35 years.
Both GiGi and I are excited to share the beauty of our collection with all those who visit our
award-winning library here in Rancho Mirage. We have become friends with some of the
miners who actually dug the specimens, and I have had the fun of cutting and polishing some
of the pieces myself. They come from all parts of the world, including Brazil, China, Argentina,
Mexico, Spain, Afghanistan, Morocco, Madagascar, Australia, Uruguay, Peru, Canada, and of
course, the USA. We hope you enjoy them as much as we have over the years.
Joe and GiGi Roberson

On June 4, 2015, The Rancho Mirage City Council serving as Library Board, enthusiastically
accepted this very special gift. The Joe and GiGi Roberson Mineral Collection is on permanent
display in the Special Collections Room at the Library and can be viewed anytime the Library
is open.
