Programs & Exhibits Guide: July - September, 2017

The City of Rancho Mirage Public Library.

Welcome to the Rancho Mirage Public Library…

and the reasons why Summer is so cool at the Library:
• “Walking With the Stars,” our low impact, air-conditioned exercise
opportunity is on again, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. in our Community Room, where
25 laps makes for a cool, carpeted mile.
• Docu-Mondays are scheduled July 10 – August 28, 2 – 3:30 p.m. with
eight outstanding documentaries introduced by Jason Bruecks.
• Children’s Summer Reading Club, Reading By Design, through
August 4th. This is our twenty-second summer “raising readers.” Our
mission is to keep children focused on books, reading, crafts, and
educational (and entertaining) programs.
• Jim Borax’s California Cabaret, Saturday, September 9, 2–3:30 p.m.,
back by popular demand! An afternoon featuring the Great American
Songbook presented by dazzling performers.

Though Summer may not be “the season” with the frenetic pace of our
Winter months, we have planned a Summer for you with exercise, film
screenings, a great concert, and many ways that we plan to keep Valley
children reading and learning.
Please enjoy your cool, comfortable Library, a Summer staycation of ideas.

David Bryant,
Library Director

Walking with the Stars*

If walking is part of your regular exercise routine, there is no need to
abandon it during the hot months. The Community Room at the Rancho
Mirage Public Library is open with a walking track, 9 AM – 2 PM through
October. The Community Room is air-conditioned and carpeted for a “soft”
track at 71-100 Hwy 111, Rancho Mirage. Feet and joints will appreciate a

carpeted floor that is much softer than pavement or concrete.

The Library’s Community Room has ample open space for walking
tracks plus a great sound system. The Library offers varying
musical selections while walkers make laps.

Any pace works in the Community Room — brisk to leisurely — with each
lap 1/25th of a mile. “For those who count, a very average pace of 3 miles
per hour will yield a mile on carpet in just 20 minutes,” says David Bryant,
Library Director. It is possible to encounter a local celebrity or cross paths
with an elected official along the way. Strike up a conversation, make new

friends and get some exercise, all without breaking a sweat!

The Library welcomes people with mobility issues, using canes,
walkers, wheelchairs or receiving a helping hand from their

caregivers and service dogs. This program is for everyone and
comfortable shoes/sneakers are the only equipment needed.

think faster. focus better. remember more.

A recent AARP survey reports 9 in 10 people say brain health is
important, but few know how to maintain it. BrainHQ™ is an easy way
to make brain health a priority. Our brains are at their peak performance
at age 27, but through continual learning and challenge we can
help remodel our brains and function maximally, so we can lead
the life we want.

BrainHQ is an online suite of 29 exercises with 895 levels of training
organized around the 6 core cognitive areas of Attention, Brain Speed,
Memory, People Skills, Intelligence and Navigation. Exercises are
delivered in short 2 minute or less segments, adapting speed and
delivery to your performance. A private, personal dashboard visualizes
your performance and provides feedback and suggestions on areas
of focus.

Through training you too can gain 10 years improvement in
memory, experience increased visual and auditory processing,
improve reaction time, and even decrease medical costs.

Get started by creating your private account with BrainHQ, and light
up your brain. Training is available online, or by downloading an app to

The series is dedicated to Joel Hochberg who made many documentaries
