Foreword 4

Inspire, inform, impact, and influence. In those powerful words lives the vision of the Latino Leadership
Institute (LLI) at the University of Denver (DU). Our story began in 2013 when our founders had the foresight to
build a pipeline of Latino leaders prepared for elevated leadership across our city, state, and country.

Joelle L. Martinez Less than four years later, the Institute has experienced quantifiable success. Of the 85 Alumni who have
Katherine Archuleta graduated from our Fellowship Program, nearly 70 percent have experienced leadership advancement in
their careers or through board service. We expect these results to continue.

As we engage and empower today’s Latino leaders, we must honor those Latinos who paved the way for
our Alumni and Fellows. This is the narrative behind the creation of the Colorado Latino Hall of Fame we
launched in 2016. Over the past two years, we have acknowledged the contributions of 12 Hall of Fame
inductees. Their recognition forever memorializes the influence of Colorado Latinos.

As 2018 commences, we are proud to launch our Impact Initiative, which is focused on building
partnerships with organizations that want to prepare for a rapidly changing population and workforce
demographics. Through the Initiative, the LLI will also collaborate with researchers to provide a deeper
understanding of the diverse Latino population, host symposiums designed to engage and inform new
audiences, and provide seminars on leadership-themed topics.

We are also excited to announce the launch of our Alumni Portal and new website. The platforms are
aligned to create an access point for organizations to search for Latino talent with varying expertise.

We are proud of our accomplishments. And we are the first to admit our achievements are shared.
Our founders, Advisory Board members, DU, and supporters have been there every step of the way. To all of
you, we say thank you for inspiring, informing, influencing, and impacting us.

Your investment and support have created a ripple effect -- and onward our momentum continues.

Sincerely, Katherine Archuleta

COLORADO LATINO HALL OF FAME

Colorado has a rich history spanning centuries of Latino leadership. From building
towns to public service and entrepreneurship, the Latino footprint in Colorado is
undeniable. In 2016, the LLI created the Latino Hall of Fame to ensure that the legacy of
Latino leadership in Colorado is never forgotten and honorably recognized. The Hall of
Fame honors Latino leaders and organizations who have achieved extraordinary
success in contributing to our state’s civic, economic, and political history.

In 2017, the LLI opened the nomination process to the public. More than 100 11
nominations were received. To publicly share their stories and officially induct these
Latino luminaries, the LLI hosts an annual Gala. The 2017 Gala included remarks
from many inspiring Colorado leaders including the Hon. Federico Peña, Tim Márquez,
Lola Salazar, University of Denver Chancellor Rebecca Chopp, and Katherine
Archuleta. Gala emcees were Ryan Spilborghs of AT&T SportsNet and Belen De Leon
of 9News.

The accomplishments of the Latino Hall of Fame Inductees changed lives, built enterprises, and brought INSPIRE
hope to neighborhoods and communities. But the legacies they left behind are even more profound.
The work of the Institute is to share these stories of inspiration with the people of Colorado. In partnership
with 9News, the LLI released a 30-minute documentary in 2016 and a two-week series in 2017.
The growth of the Gala over the last two years has increased our reach and deepened the impact of
our mission.
There are so many stories of Latino leadership just waiting to be lived, told,
and heard. We look forward to telling many more powerful stories of Latino
leadership in Colorado.

FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

Through its Fellowship Program, the Institute
has developed a pipeline of qualified Latino
professionals to serve in positions of influence
and power.
Fellows enter the LLI Fellowship as talented and
dedicated individuals who are committed to
personal and professional growth.

Shentel Rodriguez, Fellow

Fellows graduate with new knowledge, skills, and
a network that prepares them for career
advancement and elevated leadership roles in
communities throughout the State of Colorado.

By increasing the number of Latinos in executive
roles, the LLI is developing a talent pipeline of
experts positioned to advance the State of
Colorado across industries and sectors.

Fellow Profile

In 2017, the Institute received a INFORM
two-year grant from The Colorado
Trust to expand our reach in
support of communities across
Colorado. Their support has
allowed us to offer scholarships for
Fellows from rural Colorado.

ALUMNI 20

The LLI focuses on ongoing professional development
designed to support individual leadership growth. Every
Fellow is encouraged and supported to seek out further
career and personal advancement opportunities as an
Alumni member.

In 2017, the Institute developed a customized Alumni
Portal to share job or board opportunities in addition to
connecting Alumni across cohorts. By preparing for the
future when the LLI has hundreds and even thousands of
Alumni, the portal becomes a networking hub in itself.

Hiring managers or search firms can now directly search the
online Alumni Directory to find Latino talent that is ready,
willing, and able to serve in leadership roles. Companies and
organizations can search by areas of expertise, geography,
or other key words. The LLI is the conduit connecting today’s
top Latino talent and organizations throughout the state.

COLORADO’S DEMOGRAPHIC FUTURE INFLUENCE

Reason for Latino
Population Growth

Age difference and birth rates, not
current immigration rates, account
for Colorado’s demographic future.
Whites are much older than Latinos.
The average age among Colorado’s
white population is 40; for Latinos, the
average age is 27. People in their 40s
are far less likely to have children,
while people in their 20s and 30s are
highly likely to have children.

Research is the distance between an idea and its realization. At the LLI, we will realize our ability as an 25
influencer by sharing groundbreaking data on Latinos. Demography may not always determine destiny, but
knowledge can be the true change agent in predicting and preparing for tomorrow.

In partnership with Latino Decisions and the Latino Data Project, the Institute released a
groundbreaking study on Colorado’s Latino electorate in 2016. The report provided innovative analysis
that was groundbreaking in both sample size and demographic profile of Latinos surveyed. With a deeper
understanding of how Latinos will impact all aspects of life in Colorado, the report identified opportunities and
threats to a rapidly growing Latino population. The LLI will continue to partner with organizations to share
valuable research.
