Welcome 3

Each school in our multi-academy trust has a unique identity, is configured to meet the needs of its community, led by a Headteacher and a Local Governing Body. Nevertheless, we expect each school to share our vision and values, and ensure every child receives an exceptional education. As such we insist each has: • An explicit ethos and culture of high expectations and inclusion • Behaviour of the highest standard • A meticulously planned curriculum, which is delivered consistently well by teachers every lesson, every day to every child • A robust culture of safeguarding • A thorough and inclusive personal development strategy • Leadership at every level who are focused and driven by the right priorities • Rigorous internal and external quality assurance • A culture of continuous improvement We expect them to relentlessly focus on the components of highly effective schools, to develop and share best practice, to follow agreed Trust quality frameworks (i.e. curriculum, SEN & safeguarding); and engage in partnership and Trust-led improvement strategies. To move towards alignment if this improves quality and effectiveness. 4

Keeping Children Safe Everyone at Nether Edge Primary School is passionate about and committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. We expect all sta and visitors to share this commitment. Our sta are trained at regular intervals and are aware of how to keep our pupils safe and what signs to look for. Our pupils are encouraged to share any concerns that they have. We are fully committed to ensuring that consistent e ective procedures support families, children and sta who are part of our school. We know that many children at Nether Edge Primary enjoy a range of media, including computers, tablets and games. These are great fun, but it is important to be aware of the risks involved in each of these. Within our curriculum, we teach safety online to all our children, however it is vital that parents have an overview of what technology children are using and what risks these may pose. On our website you can nd some useful hints and tips to keep safe on the most popular forms of media. If you believe a child is at risk online, you should contact the school to discuss this. Parents can also refer to thinkuknow.co.uk for general information with regards to safety online. Online Safety 6

At Nether Edge, children will have access to a wide range of rich experiences to extend learning beyond the classroom and to nurture, develop and stretch their interests. Enrichment 9

The shape of our school. The shape of our future. Our school is a community which celebrates the uniqueness and diversity of each individual. We work closely with children and their families to ensure that we prepare pupils for the next stage, whatever that may be. We do this with Reading and Oracy at our core so that children develop a lifelong love and passion for language and vocabulary, are able to articulate knowledge and build exceptional relationships in school and the wider world. Our vision is simple and forms the SHAPE of our school. All members of our school community will come to our school and be in SHAPE now and as they grow and develop. They will also learn to support others to be in SHAPE too. To be in SHAPE is... To be Safe To be Happy and Healthy To Achieve Well To Play a Positive Part To be Excited by Learning 10

Curriculum 12 We want every child at Nether Edge to flourish: to be safe, happy and healthy, to achieve across all subjects, to play a positive part in their school and wider community and to be excited and engaged in their learning. We call this the SHAPE of our school. Through a wide range of learning opportunities, we want children to leave our school engaged and con dent learners with a variety of skills that ensure they have options for successful futures. Our curriculum is rmly rooted in our local community. Our curriculum intent covers the breadth of the National Curriculum. Its design is based on research evidence and our trust curriculum principles. Reading and vocabulary are at the very core of our curriculum. All subjects are sequenced and iteratively designed so that learning is built upon throughout school. We are explicit in how current learning links to, and builds upon, previous learning. We recognise learning as a change in long-term memory and therefore if nothing has been remembered, nothing has been learnt. As such, all lessons begin with a Remember More task. This is carefully planned retrieval practice that checks for retention and provides the opportunity to give reminders and prompts to reinforce learning. Retrieval activities can take many forms so that pupils have the opportunity to draw on memories and experiences.

13 At Nether Edge, our curriculum is delivered in four carefully constructed cycles of learning. This allows pupils to explore foundation subjects in more depth over the ten-week blocks. The prisms of reading, writing, maths and oracy are drawn into other areas of the curriculum to optimise learning, and vice versa. For example, when history is a driver of the curriculum, pupils will pre-learn elements of history knowledge and vocabulary in the morning through carefully designed reading anthologies and reading lessons. They learn the knowledge of history through the lens of reading, as well as key vocabulary in context. This makes learning purposeful and meaningful as schema are built and pupils therefore recognise tangible links in learning when drawing on di erent elements of learning and di erent points throughout the day. Subjects are carefully planned to contextualise learning for our community and for the present day. Key gures and role models have been carefully selected to learn about so that pupils see themselves represented in the curriculum. We bring learning to life by welcoming members of our community into school to share their careers and how that links to pupils’ learning. The golden thread of the equalities is woven through our curriculum and o ers children the chance to learn about di erence in our world and build understanding, tolerance, co-operation, empathy and appreciation skills. Oracy is woven through our curriculum as we recognize the fundamental need for children to be able to articulate themselves, their thoughts and needs clearly, as well as to be able to engage in more complex conversations. In the classroom, ‘Say It Better’ boards share carefully planned, progressive sentence starters that support children to articulate their thinking and reasoning. All interactions are based around maximizing this opportunity. For example, at lunch times in our Le Monde dining room, children might share a ‘book spot’ or their thoughts on the Newsround clip they shared in class that morning. We encourage children to be ‘loud and proud’. As a result of our curriculum, we want: Avid readers, with reading used as a tool for learning in every subject. Children who can articulate well through speaking, using subjectspeci c vocabulary. Children who understand they are part of an interconnected world which they have the power and opportunity to influence for the better. All teaching and learning to alter children’s long-term memory. Our curriculum is supported and enhanced by a range of providers, including: • Read, Write Inc. • Maths – No Problem! • Times Tables Rock Stars • Assertive Mentoring Maths • Qualitas Sport • Access Art • She eld Music Hub • Charanga Music • Key Stage History • Purple Mash

Our PE curriculum aims to instil an appreciation for the importance of physical activity, as well as developing a lifelong love of sport. Maintaining healthy lifestyles is also woven through the curriculum o er. Every lesson has opportunities for talking: recapping prior learning, peer teaching, breaking down skills orally- using key words to help embed understanding. The curriculum is founded on ‘running, jumping, throwing and catching’, ‘competitive games’, ‘flexibility, balance & control’ and ‘dance’. The curriculum progresses year on year through these key teaching areas, meaning skills, knowledge and technical strategy build and develop over time. Our curriculum also develops children’s attitudes to sport, as well as appreciation of all who participate, meaning equalities, fairness, empathy and drive for success are at the heart of everything taught. We aim to build physically and emotionally con dent children through our PE curriculum. We want: • Children whose knowledge, skill; and technical ability grow over time • Children who can articulate well through speaking; • Children who drive for success, while appreciating fairness and equalities in sport • PE curriculum teaching to alter children’s long term memory. The Arts At Nether Edge, children are imaginative, inspired and empowered to make their own creative choices. In art lessons in our brand new creative studio, children build the key skills and embark upon exploratory creative journeys, working towards varied and individual outcomes underpinned by four key discipline areas: colour theory, drawing, painting and sculpture. Throughout their time at Nether Edge, children are inspired by the work of carefully chosen artists and designers, including a range of local She eld creatives. Children visit at least two art spaces during their time in primary school, to experience art and design in the wider world. We also enjoy visits from artists such as Pete McKee and James Brunt – bringing art to life for our children! Art Through a variety of creative and practical projects, children are taught the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to engage in the process of designing and making a product. Children at Nether Edge follow the iterative design process of researching, designing, making and evaluating. Using this process enables children to fully understand the processes and think clearly about their designs when striving to meet a design brief. Children learn to take risks and how to become reflective, resilient learners whilst learning how Design Technology impacts everyday life and the wider world. We aim to link our design work to other curriculum areas such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. At Nether Edge, we are all designers. DT Our Nether Edge music curriculum inspires children to develop a love of music and the skills of musicians. Children engage critically with music, showing thoughtful listening skills and using the musical canon to compose and perform their own music. All children in KS2 have the opportunity to learn an instrument whether it be recorder, glockenspiel or violin. This experience is supported and enhanced by the She eld Music Hub. We work closely with expert music teachers who lead or support excellent, high-quality sessions with our children. The musical skills that they learn are then applied to the class teacherled sessions. For example, during our immersive music days, children will use the skills they have already learnt to con dently create and perform music. We plan for children to have the opportunity to perform, both in and out of school. For example, in singing assemblies, Christmas performances and trips out of school, such as the One Voice performance in Year 5. In addition, our school choir practises each week and performs at local community events. At Nether Edge, we are all musicians. Music Pete McKee visit 16

Meersbrook Park Enrichment Yorkshire Sculpture Park Choir at Nether Edge Market Y6 Residential in Scarborough Visits and experiences are planned throughout school and are lots of fun. These range from a visit to the park in nursery to a two night residential visit to Scarborough in Y6; a visit from a Stone Age expert to a trip to Wake eld to study the work of Barbara Hepworth. Experiences are varied and are a great way to enrich learning. We carefully plan the costs of any visits so that these are spread throughout a child's time at school. We make the most of the local area so that children really know where they live and what it has to o er, as well as keeping costs down. 18
