TORQUAY AWAY - 20 YEARS ON...

Tomorrow our Colts (U18) side take on Moortown RFC in the
second round of the National Cup. Kick off at Grangefield is 1pm
and the team would really appreciate your support. Coached by
Simon Crozier, the side has an impressive record locally- winning
last years U16 Durham Cup and Darlington Festival. A number of
the side have also appeared in the 1st XV this season.

We have Graham Easby to thank for the sign The National Cup holds many fond memories for former
Colts, facing unfamiliar opposition in exotic locations

Still, Rob Gething, Russ Alderson, Graham Carter, Mark Skirving since 2005/06 when coincidently we were knocked out of
the main Cup competition by Moortown. This side featured
the likes of Tom Jeffrey, Sam Toulson, Tom Armstrong
and a fresh-faced Matthew Austen. Back then, if you were
knocked out of the main Cup, you would be entered
into the Plate competition. Victories in the plate over
Cleckheaton (H), West Park Bramhope (H), Widnes (A) set
up a tie at Northampton Old Scouts for the second time in
two years. Old Scouts proved to be a step too far, with their
side featuring a tall and gangly Courtney Lawes, knocking
Stockton out at the last 8 stage.
One of our most famous National Cup ties was played
almost exactly 20 years ago, a last 16 match against Torquay
Athletic. Captained by Matty Oates, the side travelled to
deepest Devon in fine form, having recorded a 13-10 victory
at Glossop in the previous round. Coach Peter Armstrong
remembers the weekend well:
“Torquay was a great experience for the team. We travelled
down at 10am on the Saturday before staying over ahead of
the game on Sunday lunchtime. It was midnight before we
pulled back into the club at Norton.

Stockton RFC v Guisborough RFC - Saturday 10th February 2018

We started the game well but were 6-3 down at half time. We had a number of chances early in the second half but couldn’t
finish them off. Torquay ended up scoring a couple of penalties and a converted try and it finished 19-3.
It was a great turnout from the whole club though and the supporters certainly enjoyed the weekend as much as the players.
We had some really good representative players but also real characters in the side with the likes of Mojo, Gary Skirving and
Graham Easby. Graham even managed to “acquire” the sign which promoted the game.”

Tomorrow’s game kicks off at 1pm- see you there!

IT’S FUN DOWN THE ALLOTMENT…

With Martin Dixon

We have a new monthly feature in the programme. Back-
row forward Martin Dixon will be shedding some light on
the world of allotment-craft, offering tips and advice for
the green fingered folk out there.
February can be a tricky month down at the allotment.
We can often see big swings in temperatures. Last week
we had some really mild nights and often people get
excited and think spring is here. I bumped into Jonny
Cheetham down at the lotty last week and he was busy
sowing away wearing just a vest. I just chuckled “Jonny-
you don’t have the frame or enough tattoos to wear a
vest in public- and the weather is set to drop below zero
next week,” I said. Rookie mistake by JC.
February is still a crucial month though. I have been
growing award-winning onions for about four years now
but this is when birds are at their mischievous best. Now
is the time to cover with netting otherwise your favourite
onion soup with be sans onion.
If you are desperate to start sowing I would suggesting
getting your broad beans and peas on the go inside. I
bought some really nice looking trays on Amazon a few
weeks ago so I don’t get it in the neck off wor lass.
If, like me, you love garlic as much as a garic loving
Frenchman- I suggest you get this in straight away. Garlic
needs at least 30 nights of weather under 10 degrees
otherwise they won’t develop (think Jonny’s arms).
If you have any gardening-related questions please tweet
me using the hashtag #AskDicko and I will get back to
you in my March column.

Stockton RFC v Guisborough RFC - Saturday 10th February 2018

THE GOOD PLAYERS CODE

Players should be encouraged to:
1. Recognise and appreciate the efforts made by coaches, parents, match officials and administrators in
providing the opportunity to play the game and enjoy the rugby environment.
2. Understand the values of loyalty and commitment to adults and team mates.
3. Recognise that every player has a right to expect their involvement in rugby to be safe and freefrom all
types of abuse.
4. Understand that if an individual or group of players feel they are not being treated in a manner that is
acceptable, then they should tell an adult at the Club or the club’s welfare officer.
5. Play because they want to do so, not to please coaches or parents.
6. Remember that skill development, fun and enjoyment are the most important parts of the game.
7. Be attentive at all training and coaching sessions.
8. Work equally hard for themselves and their team - both will then benefit.
9. Recognise good play by all players on their team and by their opponents.
10. Be a sportsman - win with dignity, lose with grace.
11. Play to the IRB Laws of the Game and accept, without question, all referees’ decisions even if they
appear to make a mistake.
12. Control their emotions. Verbal or physical abuse of team mates, opponents, coaches, match officials or
spectators is not acceptable.
13. Treat all players as they would like to be treated themselves. Do not interfere with, bully or take
advantage of any player.

THE GOOD SPECTATORS CODE

Spectators Should:
1. Act as positive role models to all players.
2. Be familiar with, and abide by, the RFU Child Protection Guidance in relation to verbal and emotional
abuse.
3. Respect guidance from the Club with regard to spectator behaviour.
4. Remember children play sport primarily for their own enjoyment, not for that of the spectators.
5. Acknowledge good individual and team performance from all players irrespective of the team in which
they play.
6. Respect match officials’ decisions, even if they appear to make a mistake – remember, they are
volunteers providing an opportunity for players to play rugby.
7. Never verbally abuse players, coaches, match officials or fellow spectators: such behaviour can create
a negative environment for players and their behaviour will often reflect this.
8. Acknowledge effort and good performance rather than ‘to win at all costs’.
9. Verbally encourage all players in a positive manner, shouting ‘for’, not ‘at’, the players.
10. Encourage all players irrespective of their ability - never ridicule any individual players, regardless of
the team in which they play.
