Some readers might already know that nearby in
Newburgh, NY, near the end of the Revolutionary
War in March of 1783, General George
Washington faced a crisis that could have changed
American history. I’m no expert in Revolutionary
War history, but in one of my favorite books
about George Washington, Sacred Fire by Dr.
Peter Lillback and Jerry Newcombe, the story is
told using the writings of Washington himself.
Members of the Army were being withheld pay
owed to them. This had long been a source of
pain and frustration. Though happy at the war’s
outcome, some officers considered rash actions in
order to force congress to pay them. Washington had to step in and stop things
from ending “in blood,” as he wrote in a letter to Alexander Hamilton. And all this
happened just a short drive from the Barnes and Noble off Route 300 where you and
I can now buy books about it and read them while sipping Starbucks coffee!
Here’s what seems so relevant about that episode: Washington stopped the uprising
by appealing to the soldiers’ honor. It is one of many examples of how our country
requires citizens to be people of honor in order for it to function correctly and for us
to overcome obstacles. Washington put it well in a speech he wrote to these men. He
told them that if they did the right thing they would make history by “rising superior
to the pressure of the most complicated sufferings.” This sounds like a great thing to
ask God to help us with today. May God richly bless you and yours in this new year!

Psalms 139:13-16 NLT, “You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body
and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so
wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it.
You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven
together in the dark of the womb. You saw me before I was born. Every day of
my life was recorded in Your book. Every moment was laid out before a single
day had passed.”
“I’m not growing! I’m the shortest kid in my grade, and I’m never going to
grow!” He snipped at me. My middle son was struggling. Struggling with not
fitting in, struggling with what he looked like, struggling with how God made
him. I’m not tall, I cash in at five foot two and three quarter inches. Yes, I
included the three quarter inch because it counts! My dad isn’t tall, so the chances of him hitting six feet isn’t realistic, but is he going to stay
four foot nine inches tall forever? It’s doubtful, but I look into his big deep brown eyes, and I can’t help but completely understand where
he’s coming from.
There are days when I feel 100 percent confident in who God is and in all that means for me. I’ve got my eyes right where they belong on
Christ, and I feel like I can conquer the world. Then there are days I wake up and have to fight to remember who God is and who I am. I
have to flip through the pages of my journal to remind myself of the words spoken to me and over me by my Father in Heaven. Days I feel
less than confident in how God made me and wonder if I’ve heard His voice correctly. Moments where the words of doubt creep into my heart
and suddenly I’m hyper aware of everything I lack in order to fully walk in my purpose. Ever notice that once we start to focus on the negative
things, our eyes seem to manufacture more negative things? The principle of negative multiplication. Okay, I absolutely made that up!
According to recognized aero technical tests, the bumblebee cannot fly because of the shape and weight of his body in relation to the total
wing area. The bumblebee does not know this, so he goes ahead and flies anyway. What!? By every right, looking with the human eye, a
bumblebee has no business flying. It doesn’t make sense scientifically. But just because we can’t understand how something works using our
human understanding, doesn’t mean it can’t be. What really spoke to me is that the bumblebee doesn’t know he “shouldn’t” be flying, so he
does it anyway. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve talked myself or let others point out the areas that I “shouldn’t be” flying. But it isn’t the
fact that science says the bee can fly that it flies. It flies simply because that is what God designed it to do.
What about you? Are there areas that you talk yourself out of walking in the fullness of who God created you to be? Areas that don’t make
sense by the standards of what man can understand, but by standards of faith and God. Remember, anything is possible. 1 Corinthians 3:7
It’s not important who does the planting or who does the watering. What is important is that God makes the seed grow. It is God who is in
charge of creating the harvest. Our job is simply to fly in accordance to how God made us with no questions asked.
Prayer Starter:
Lord God, I praise you and thank you that I am fearfully and wonderfully made. That you make no mistakes in how I was made and that you
have created me with a perfect plan. Lord help me to embrace how you made me. Help me to fly and not question your creation.
In Jesus’ name and authority I pray, Amen.
