Looking down from above, the big picture with the widest lens may show a geographical area known
as the Hamlet of Pine Bush, but zoom in and you may see the Crawford Town Park. Zoom in a bit
more and you can start to see the shape of a cancer ribbon and maybe a bit of the Garden of Hope.
Zoom in further and you will probably see Donna Henke. She may be alone, with her husband, or
any one of a corps of volunteers who carry out any number of tasks related to the Garden of Hope or
the Pine Bush Area Relay for Life.
When I asked Donna Henke if we could set up a time for an interview, her first response was, “I am
not sure I am interesting enough,” to be a story in the Pine Bush Quarterly. Well, I certainly beg to
differ. One thing I really want to stress is this woman, this survivor, this volunteer, this organizer,
co-chair, mother, wife and sister, is certainly interesting. She shared her story with some humour, cold, hard facts, and
compassion for others facing their diagnosis. In fact, if I sit and review the film in my head of the time I have spent with
her, the highlights would be hearing her say at a Relay, “I can’t wait for a day when no one else will ever have to hear the
words, ‘You have cancer,’ and her passion for ensuring the survivor celebration, with dinner and recognition, is one of
the key aspects of the entire Relay for Life event.
Right now, a man, woman or child may be receiving results of a test and may be told, “You have cancer.” Right now,
Donna Henke is likely working out details or coming up with new ideas to keep the community interested in the Pine
Bush Area Relay for Life. I’m sure if a cure is found tomorrow, Henke would be fine with the idea of looking for another
cause to champion and would successfully find a way to tie the community to it. But, today, your help is still needed
so, look up the Relay on Facebook, join a team, or simply contact Donna to learn more about becoming a volunteer or
committee member and look for a way you can participate in the June 2, 2018 event.
Donna Henke, your story is certainly interesting and congratulations as you celebrate your own journey as a survivor
living cancer free for ten years!
Take care,
