This year’s Grand Marshal is Patricia Mary Elizabeth
“Pat” Pskowski. Marc Devitt who chaired the
search committee succinctly summed up what led
to Pat’s nomination. “We simply wanted, especially on this
milestone anniversary of The Ramble, to select someone who
truly exemplifies the very best of St. Patrick and our great
Montgomery community. All of us agreed there was no one
who fits this description better than Pat. It was a privilege to
nominate Pat to the full operating board and satisfying to have
them universally concur.”
Pat is a native of Nutley, New Jersey. The oldest of three girls
and two boys brought into the world by Rose and Salvatore
Strafaci. It was in Nutley she discovered the love of her life
Bernie Pskowski. Fast forward, Pat and Bernie will be married
48 years this coming September. Their union blessed them with
sons John and Brian. The Pskowski clan was later joined by
the welcomed addition of daughter-in-law Melissa upon her
marriage to Brian.
In the early 1970’s, as a newlywed visiting Montgomery, Pat
fell in love with the area. Reminiscing, she recalls how drawn
she was to the way of life found here. She particularly noted
how involved businesses, schools, churches, and organizations
such as the little league were in everyday activity. It was however, the people of the
community who left the strongest impression. Pat says, “To this date, I know it was
the friendliness of the people, their willingness to help one another, their appreciation
of local history, and just plain old civic pride which convinced Bernie and I that this
was where we wanted to call home and raise our children. We love it here now as much
as we did then. The fact our children John, Brian, and Melissa have also chosen to
make Montgomery their home speaks for itself.”
Pat is perhaps best known these days for the role played in operating the popular
Pskowski family restaurant-The Ward’s Bridge Inn. Her community presence
however, extends far beyond Ward’s Bridge. Among other things, Pat is past president
of Montgomery Nursery School where she remains a teacher’s assistant. She holds
the position Treasurer of Holy Name of Mary-Assumption Alter Society, is a member
of the Parish’s Finance Committee, and a long time judge at General Montgomery
festivities. In short, if there is an event or undertaking impacting Montgomery you
are sure to find Pat is part of it.
“This is a special year for the Village’s St. Pat’s Ramble,” said Mayor Steve Brescia. “It Serving Lunch & Dinner
is therefore fitting that such an exceptional person as Pat Pskowski has been chosen. I

Greetings from the Village of Montgomery
The planned water filtration plant for the Holt Well Field has been postponed.
The Orange County Dept. of Health, as well as N.Y. State Dept. of Health
both want the Village of Montgomery to do much more testing to ensure that a
filtration plant will solve the brown water issues in the Village, especially in the
Waters Edge residential area. DPW Supt. Buddy Nelson has been investigating
a variety of solutions, and it has been quite complex. We will keep residents
informed of the latest developments.
The Village was approved for a H.U.D. grant to complete the eight-inch water
line replacement on the west-end of Clinton Street. The work is tentatively set
to commence in August. Business owners should be prepared for disruption of business due to the street
being partially or fully closed for approximately one month. The contractor (once the bid is awarded)
and the Village DPW will work with businesses and residents to ensure that the project is as seamless
as possible. This section will be more difficult than last year’s because we will be crossing Union Street.
On the positive side, the downtown center will have enhanced water flow and fire protection.
The Village DPW still plans to begin improvements at the intersection of Union and Clinton Want to fill a need right here in your

On a recent, typical, Friday evening, both the steak au

and served to guests who appeared quite pleased judging
not only by their expressions, but the clean plates that were
cleared a short time later. Homemade gnocci, and fettucini
are also among the flavorful offerings but for Balacich the
most important food item could be easily overlooked.
“ I keep a basket of bread by the door,” he said. “When
you come here, I want you to feel like you are here to
break bread with me.”
While the baked good by the entrance is visual and symbolic,
the sentiment is sincere and can be exhibited each and every
time you visit.
What better way to spend time with people you care about
then at the dinner table? Balacich is fortunate to have not
only loyal customers and patrons, but guests. Folks who have
visited 88 Charles Street Café regularly through the years as
well as fellow Village residents who truly seem to adore the
owner.
“Just the other night, the Mayor ate here,” said Balacich, “and
I asked him, ‘When are you going to change the name of this
street to Mario Street? Why wait until I’m gone?”
Later, Mayor Steve Brescia was asked if he would like to
respond to Balacich’s lighthearted teasing.
“Mario deserves much more than a street named after him.
He and 88 Charles have been an institution in the Village of
Montgomery. He has had one of the finest restaurants in the
Hudson Valley, and it is a major anchor of our village. Not only
is he a great man but, he is like a mentor with much wisdom.
He is like family member to me and my family as well as so
many other families in the Village,” Mayor Brescia said.

Some readers might already know that nearby in
Newburgh, NY, near the end of the Revolutionary
War in March of 1783, General George
Washington faced a crisis that could have changed
American history. I’m no expert in Revolutionary
War history, but in one of my favorite books
about George Washington, “Sacred Fire,” by Dr.
Peter Lillback and Jerry Newcombe, the story is
told using the writings of Washington himself.
Members of the Army were being withheld pay
owed to them. This had long been a source of
pain and frustration. Though happy at the war’s
outcome, some officers considered rash actions in
order to force congress to pay them. Washington had to step in and stop things
from ending “in blood,” as he wrote in a letter to Alexander Hamilton. And all this
happened just a short drive from the Barnes and Noble off Route 300 where you and
I can now buy books about it and read them while sipping Starbucks coffee!
Here’s what seems so relevant about that episode: Washington stopped the uprising
by appealing to the soldiers’ honor. It is one of many examples of how our country
requires citizens to be people of honor in order for it to function correctly and for us
to overcome obstacles. Washington put it well in a speech he wrote to these men. He
told them that if they did the right thing they would make history by “rising superior
to the pressure of the most complicated sufferings.” This sounds like a great thing to
ask God to help us with today. May God richly bless you and yours in this new year!

The Howard House was located on the corner of Clinton and Union Streets. As much of the name may imply, it was not a hotel at all. Rather, the second
floor was empty and used as a hall. On the first floor was a barber shop, and down in the cellar there was sort of a butcher shop. After the turn of the century,
the Howard House was moved and remains the building which is now Ed’s Deli. Mr. Devitt was instrumental in purchasing the Howard House and having
it moved. Soon after the Montgomery Bank was built on the former location, and was later called the First National Bank. A gas light can be seen in the
photo which was one of the few that still remained until electricity came into the Village in 1916
