TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH
“VANITY OF VANITIES, ALL IS VANITY!”
Do you ever think that if you could have everything you ever wanted, then your life would
be void of problems and you’d find the purpose or meaning you’ve been missing? Of course
you’ve thought that! We all have. It’s part of being human. We yearn for meaning and purpose, constantly seeking ways to
fix problems. And if you’re anything like me, you’ve probably come to the conclusion that ‘having it all’ would permanently
fix your life. If you’ve ever felt like that, you’re not alone.
There was a man who “had it all,” or, literally, everything ‘under the sun.’ King Solomon of ancient Israel is estimated by
some scholars to have carried an estimated net worth of what would be equivalent to 2.2 trillion dollars today. That’s a lot
of cash, eh!? He writes about all of this in a book called “Ecclesiastes,” one of the books of the Bible. In it he shares how he
had all of the pleasure, money, and pursuits a person could ever ask for. In his own words he had “everything a man could
desire.” Yet, contrary to what most of us would think, Solomon doesn’t claim to find meaning, purpose, and joy through
any of those things. Rather he actually calls all things “Hevel,” or in English, “Vanity.” “VANITY OF VANITIES!” He
exclaims, “ALL IS VANITY!”
“Hevel” literally means smoke, or vapor. It appears to be there, but when you grab it, you can’t. The stuff he calls “hevel”
would surprise most humans because they are the very things most of us spend our lives pursuing: wealth, pleasure, careers, accomplishments,
promotion, honor, fame, and even wisdom! Solomon describes in depth how he intentionally set out to find the meaning of life in each of these things,
and yet he concludes that they are all ultimately “meaningless.”
Sounds crazy, right? I mean, let’s be honest. We’ve all heard it said that ‘money doesn’t buy happiness’, but if you’re anything like me, you’ve probably
said to yourself, “well. . . I’d sure love to find out for myself!” Right?! That’s the whole point of Solomon’s wisdom, however: none of those things will
ever satisfy! As a matter of fact, they often do quite the opposite . . . they leave you wanting more and more. That’s what Solomon eloquently tries
to help us realize in his complaint about the things we so often waste our energy on. Whether it is ill or well intended, all of the pursuits of man are
‘meaningless,’ or as Solomon said, like “chasing after the wind.” And here we are, a few thousand years later, pursuing the same ‘meaningless’ things,
trying to find purpose in this life in the same very same manner. Ecclesiastes reminds us over and over that ‘there is nothing new under the sun!’
So is it all really meaningless? What really brings meaning to the human life? If it’s not to accumulate wealth, or success in business, or excel in
academics, or innovate the next best technology that changes the way we do life, or however we spend our numbered days, then what is it?
Fortunately Solomon doesn’t leave us depressed and void of meaning. Through all of the ‘vanity’ that he describes, there remains this “Gift of God.”
This ‘Gift’ is not what we probably think it is. It’s not a guarantee of health, wealth, or comfort, or to gain meaning through them, but to simply…
enjoy the life we have! ‘To enjoy all of the meaningless pursuits of life under the sun,’ that is the Gift of God!” He describes this ‘gift’ of joy as being
like ‘a man who doesn’t even have time to reflect on his days because he is so preoccupied with the joy in his heart!’ If we’re being honest, who wouldn’t
want that? Imagine being consumed with joy each and every day, unburdened by the pursuits of this world and all its vanities?
I believe that ‘Gift of God’ is fulfilled by Jesus and His Gospel. Jesus gives us His joy when we ‘set our minds on things above,’ where Christ is. So while
Solomon and “us” type people can be found pursuing pleasure and purpose in the things ‘under the sun,’ Jesus urges us to find our true identity by
setting our hearts and minds ‘over the sun’. I believe that is where you and I will find joy in its truest form. Jesus invites us into our true purpose, our
true meaning by setting our hearts and minds where He is. When we align our identity in that manner, we can be born from above and made alive to
the things of God: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, self control, gentleness, and goodness.
The cure to the Vanity of Vanities done under the Sun is to abandon ourselves to the Holy of Holies over the sun where Jesus is.
Join us at Trinity on Sunday Nights from 6:00 p.m. -8:00 p.m. as we are currently studying the book of Ecclesiastes!
