Keywords: Doudna Season

Welcome to the Doudna Fine Arts Center 2021-2022
season! After a year of social distancing, we are happy
to welcome you all back to enjoy our unique building
and the many events offered in our various performance
venues (well, COVID surprises depending, of course).

Our line-up for this year includes something for
everybody: from jazz to chamber music, dance and
theatre, and much more! In addition to the ticketed
events, we are happy to announce that non-ticketed
events, e.g. faculty and student recitals, will remain accessible from the
comfort of your couch via our YouTube channel.

And if you wish to support the Doudna and its fine and performing arts
departments, we are offering the Friends of the Doudna support opportunity.
In addition, we also invite you to underwrite specific performances. All your
support will, in the end, enrich our performance capabilities and support the
many students who are enrolled in the School of Arts departments!

I hope you will enjoy this season and I look forward to seeing you at many of
our performances!

- Dean Barbara Bonnekessen

Hello! My name is Dennis Malak, and I am so excited
to be the new Director of Programming, Publicity, and
Promotions for the Doudna Fine Arts Center. I am
no stranger to the Doudna - I served as the Technical
Director and then the Director of Operations since
the grand reopening in 2008. The Doudna is such a
beautiful building, and I feel blessed to be able to
work within this artistic masterpiece of modern design
each and every day.

Planning for this coming 2021-2022 season has been so exciting, especially
after the vastly reduced season last year, with no premier season. While
watching some shows from the comfort and safety of our home was
necessary, I know that we all miss the energy and excitement of a live
performance. We, at the Doudna, are ready to provide the region with LIVE
professional, quality entertainment once again.

With that in mind, please know that the Doudna will always put the safety of
our patrons and performers first and foremost. We will continue to monitor
the best practices and policies to make sure that those who attend our
presentations, concerts, and plays know that they are safe within our walls.
Thank you, and I so look forward to seeing you again!

Hello! My name is Conor Baltz and I am the new
Director of Operations for the Doudna Fine Arts Center.
I started working for the Doudna as an EIU student
in 2016, and I have loved working here ever since! I
consider myself lucky to have the opportunity to work
with such amazing people in a world-class facility.

It has been a difficult year for so many people, but we
are so excited to be planning a new season full of live,
in-person performances! We are doing everything we
can to make sure we have a diverse, exciting, and safe set of performances to
share with you.

We truly miss having people in our seats, and we can’t wait to see you again!

so for Bob Sheppard’s. For more than four decades, the

them Chick Corea, Freddie Hubbard, Michael and
Randy Brecker, Mike Stern, Herbie Hancock, Kurt Elling,

THE BLACK BOX / 7:30 PM
Tickets: Free Sponsored by the Tarble Arts Center

This collaborative performance by a composer and a
visual artist is a reactive dialogue between body, sound,
and space. Aleatory music composed for the bass
clarinet and marimba creates sound that is unique to
the present moment and dependent on chance and
spontaneity. Inspired by the Japanese Butoh dance
tradition, a performer’s body becomes a vessel for
motion and form. The slow and unsettling unfolding -
which is informed as much by empty space and silence
as Marquez-Barrios’s and Vera’s identities as immigrants
in a lineage of immigrants - positions the human
condition as one of futility, impermanence, and beauty.

Join us in the Tarble’s Commonspace to experience a crystal bowl sound
bath led by Tyna Loafman, scheduled to coincide with the cycles of the
moon and support stillness, gratitude, and reflection. The Tarble will
provide a limited number of meditation cushions and chairs on a first-
come, first-served basis. You may bring your own yoga mat or cushion
to sit on if you choose. The Tarble maintains a temperature-controlled
environment, so you may want to bring a sweater or wrap for warmth. You
are invited to arrive between 5–5:15 to get settled. Doors will be locked,
and the sound bath will begin promptly at 5:30 and last for approximately
45 minutes. No prior experience is necessary, and all are welcome. This

Tyna Loafman has been interested in holistic health practices since her
college days majoring in Therapeutic Recreation. Most recently, she
has been engaged in the training, knowledge, and practice of the Usui
Shiki Ryoho method of Reiki (pronounced ray-key), TRE® (Tension and
Trauma Releasing Exercise) as developed by Dr. David Berceli, and the
meditative and healing properties of crystal singing bowls. These practices
support the physical, mental and emotional well-being of individuals
as they deal with past and present stress and traumas. It has been her
greatest pleasure to assist others with balancing mind, body, spirit.

PIPILOTTI RIST, JANAINA TSCHÄPE, & CARRIE MAE WEEMS

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 24 – SATURDAY, DECEMBER 4, 2021
TARBLE ARTS CENTER | FREE

This exhibition traces the history of video and technology as media for
the voices of feminist discourse from second -to third- and fourth-wave
aesthetics and strategies. The title Force Majeure recognizes the power
of historical and contemporary demands for voice and visibility; suggests
the ways that nature and the landscape appear within the works in the
exhibition; and acknowledges contingency, as in the common contractual
force majeure clause. The exhibition presents a focused selection of
influential contemporary video and media works installed throughout
the Tarble’s gallery and outdoor spaces.

YOKO ONO: MEND PIECE

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 24 – SATURDAY, DECEMBER 4, 2021
TARBLE ARTS CENTER | FREE

Yoko Ono’s Mend Piece (1966/2015) calls to mind the Japanese
philosophy of Wabi-sabi, an embracing of the flawed or imperfect. The
work encourages participants to transform the fragments of broken china,
which are both delicate and dangerous, into new objects. Mend Piece is
closely tied to Ono’s beliefs: the contemplative or meditative act of
mending is intended to lead to healing of oneself and one’s community,
and, further, to healing wounds created by violence and hatred. With
straightforward directions, the artist asks participants to let go of
pretension and consider larger ideas. Ono’s words may be read on the
installation’s wall: “Mend with wisdom/mend with love./It will mend the
earth/at the same time.” Yoko Ono’s work radically questions the division

eiu.edu/doudna | 217-581-3110 | 15

between art and the everyday, the artist and the viewer. Participating
in Mend Piece, one experiences Ono’s unique practice both intellectually
and physically.

TOUCH ME

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 14 – SATURDAY, MARCH 26, 2022
TARBLE ARTS CENTER | FREE

Typically, the last thing museums want you to do is touch the artwork.
But for the Tarble’s upcoming community art exhibition, visitors will be
allowed and even encouraged to page through portfolios stored in the
galleries. Each flat-file drawer will contain artworks made by members
of the Tarble community. This intimate and tactile viewing experience
allows an unprecedented look at the variety of work being produced
by artists working today while rewarding practices of slow looking and
multiple visits to the exhibition space.

The Tarble has invited professional artists who live and work
geographically nearby, are alumni of EIU, or have worked on projects
with the Tarble in the past to submit two-dimensional works that are
18 x 24 inches or smaller in any medium. Visitors to the gallery will be
invited to wash their hands and then carefully page through portfolios
of artwork. The Tarble will manage a system to put collectors in touch
with exhibiting artists, as many of the works will be for sale. However,
the Tarble will not handle any financial transactions or sales.

WORKING ARTISTS

SELECTIONS FOR THE TARBLE ARTS CENTER’S
PERMANENT COLLECTION

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 14 – SATURDAY, MARCH 26, 2022
TARBLE ARTS CENTER | FREE

This exhibition historicizes the role of the Works Progress Administration
(WPA) in central Illinois by showcasing the work produced by artists
employed by a major federal agency during the Great Depression.
Artwork created during this period focused on a variety of themes,
including folk art, regionalism, and the American working class. Not only
is the artwork significant as a distinct movement in the long history of
the development of art, but the story behind each piece provides insight
into the artist, the historical moment which they represent, the budding
artistic movement, as well as the political and economic realities of the
era.

Students enrolled in a public history practicum course taught by Dr.
Camden Burd will get hands-on experience in a museum by researching
works in the Tarble’s permanent collection, working with Tarble staff on
curatorial methodologies, and facilitating relationships with community

7:30 PM | THE GLOBE | FREE

A night of student-created performance. Past performances have

A BRIGHT NEW BOISE

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 7 – SATURDAY, OCTOBER 9, 2021
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 10, 2021
7:30 PM & 2 PM SUNDAY MATINEE | BLACK BOX | $15/$13/$5

In the bleak, corporate break room of a craft store in Idaho, someone is
summoning The Rapture. Will, who has fled his rural hometown after a
scandal at his Evangelical church, comes to Hobby Lobby, not only for
employment, but also to rekindle a relationship with Alex, his brooding
teenage son, whom he gave up for adoption several years ago. Alex
works there along with Leroy, his adopted brother and protector, and
Anna, a hapless young woman who reads bland fiction but hopes for
dramatic endings. As their manager, foul-mouthed Pauline, tries
ceaselessly to find order (and profit) in the chaos of small business, these
lost souls of the Hobby Lobby confront an unyielding world through the
beige-tinted impossibility of modern faith.Samuel D. Hunter’s A Bright
New Boise is a earnest comedy about the meager profits of modern faith.
2011 Obie Award Winner for Playwriting.

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 11 – SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 2021
SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 2021
7:30 PM & 2 PM SUNDAY MATINEE | THE THEATRE | $15/$13/$5

A striking new ensemble drama based on the Jena Six; six Black students
who were initially charged with attempted murder for a school fight after
being provoked with nooses hanging from a tree on campus. This bold
new play by Dominique Morisseau (Sunset Baby, Detroit ‘67, Skeleton
Crew) examines the miscarriage of justice, racial double standards, and
the crises in relations between men and women of all classes and, as a
result, the shattering state of Black family life.

Based on Louisa May Alcott’s life, Little Women follows the adventures of
sisters, Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy March. Jo is trying to sell her stories for
publication, but the publishers are not interested – her friend, Professor
Bhaer, tells her that she has to do better and write more from herself.
Begrudgingly taking this advice, Jo weaves the story of herself and her
sisters and their experience growing up in Civil War America.

After Old Main, the Doudna Fine Arts Center is the most iconic building on the EIU
campus. Home to the School of the Arts (the departments of Art + Design, Music, and
Theatre) and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Dean’s Office, the building you
see today is the result of a massive expansion and renovation of the old arts building
by renowned architect Antoine Predock in 2008. From the soaring sights of the
Concourse, to the many performance venues, to being the home to the many faculty
and students of the School of the Arts, the Doudna is a lively space at all times, but
no more than when we can feature performances that range from student recitals to
world-class established artists, and collaborate with the Tarble Arts Center to bring the
visual arts to life.

We welcome your participation in the continued excellence of this fine institution! Your
annual support will sustain the many performance spaces, the sometimes mysterious
backstage, and the always awe-inspiring costume shop, and serve the infrastructure
needs of our performing arts faculty, staff, and students.

We have six levels of support from which you may select; each level brings its own
rewards - and be assured that we welcome and cherish any level of support!
