On Friday, November 10th, Arp ISD hosted its annual recognition of Veterans for our
community. As the band played service songs, the Veterans entered the gymnasium. The
program began with the saying of the Pledge of A llegiance and the singing of the National
Anthem. Many students sang songs that reminded every single person in the room how
grateful we are to have these veterans. The Elementary, Junior High, High School, and
community came together to honor the men and women who served our great country
through song and speech. Our guest speaker was retired Lieutenant Colonel Thomas A.
Gunn from the U.S. Army and he shared some riveting tales recounting the brutal and

honorable life of being a veteran.

To help the Arp Police Department raise funds for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital,
high school students had the opportunity to purchase strips of tape to try and secure Officer
Moon to the wall. Along with the other fundraisers they held, the Arp PD was able to raise
$3,826 for St. Jude to help with the care and medical expenses for children battling terminal

illness.

As the holidays approach and we find ourselves at the halfway point of the school year, I
wanted to share a little advice with our seniors and early graduates. Please make sure that
you do the following things over the holiday break:

 Apply for scholarships
 Relax and rest
 Spend time with family and friends
 Volunteer

Juniors should be exploring different colleges online and in person if possible—making
sure your choice of major is offered. Your list of possible colleges should be down to three
by the end of this school year.

I would also like to remind students who have signed up to take the TSI test, that testing
will be on Tuesday, January 9th when we return in 2018.

To all our students, parents, and guardians, I would like to wish you a Merry Christmas
and Happy New Year as you relish the goodies, decorate every nook and corner of your
home and enjoy the get-togethers... May the joy and festivities continue to radiate in your
lives, long after Christmas is gone.

The NHS members volunteered at the East Texas Food Bank in Tyler. They worked ardu-
ously for four hours sorting non-perishable foods into different boxes to be shipped to vari-

ous places in the community.

Quiz Bowl
The Arp Tigers beat Tyler Classical School in the Academic Quiz Bowl on November 1 st. Over half of

the team had never participated before and were totally new to the experience. The whole team had a lot
of fun and competed well. The quiz bowl team will compete again in January.

Mind Set
We had two teams competing in the Mind Set Competition on November 10th. The competition was

tough, however our Tigers performed extremely well. We had two teams participating. Team A did a skit
that contained a fire drill scenario and “stop, drop, and roll”. Team B’s skit was a plumber who had to get
a ring out of a sink. One student acted as the sink, and another as the door. Both teams were very creative
and we are proud of our Tigers.

On Saturday, November 18th the Arp fishing team competed in its 3rd tournament of the year. This time
at the Lake Fork against 130 other teams. With a strong cold front blowing in, the nine Arp boats
battled high winds and waves to try and catch 5 fish. Even under such tough conditions, seven were
able to weigh in fish. Hannah Eakin and Hayden Bradshaw once again lead the way for Arp, placing 2 nd
in the tournament by bringing in 5 fish for 8.24lbs. The next tournament will be held at Lake O the

Pines in February.

Demarvion Overshown received his Under Armour All America Game jersey on Thursday, November
2nd . Demarvion said that “Growing up I always wanted to be a part of the Under Armour Game. The
big names that have been in this—to be able to put my name in there with them is really cool”. Accord-
ing to ESPN, he is the No. 2 ranked safety in the class of 2018 and is a top-six overall prospect in the
state of Texas. The Under Armour All-American Game is scheduled for January 4th at Camping World
Stadium in Orlando, Florida. It will air on TV live on ESPN2 at 5:00 p.m. Demarvion is really looking
forward to competing against some of the greatest athletes in the country. We’re all rooting for you!

Congratulations!
