Honorary life-time membership for departing David

OVER 60 members and guests attended a surprise leaving party for David Waite as the Club bid a
fond farewell to their longest-serving General Manager on Thursday, April 28th.
Waite, who joined from Rushden Golf Club in March 2006, will officially complete his stint at
Wellingborough on Friday, May 13th, but the Club felt it was appropriate to hold a special get together
at Harrowden Hall before then.
To say thanks for all his exceptional work over many years, the Captains Committee confirmed he
has been offered honorary life membership at Wellingborough Golf Club.
Club President Charlie Higgins also gifted Waite (pictured below right) with a voucher to receive a
new set of custom-fitted Ping golf clubs at their European headquarters in Gainsborough.
Dan Hacker, who will take over as General Manager on Monday, June 6th, is in the process of
appointing his new Office Assistant with interviews taking place in the coming weeks.

Time for patience from all Wellingborough members

WELLINGBOROUGH Golf Club will need to deal with a
short period of uncertainty next month as the Office remains
closed for three weeks, following the departure of General
Manager David Waite on Friday, May 13th.

With Dan Hacker, who is leaving Stratford-on-Avon Golf Club
to take over the role in early June, the Club are advising all
members to be patient during this transition period.

Anyone with queries, which may normally be dealt with
by the Office at Wellingborough, are therefore advised to
contact other departments at the Club in the meantime.

Waite explained: “There is a three-week gap after I leave
without anyone in charge of the Club Office, so it will primarily be closed during this period of time.

“But obviously life still goes on. So, for any queries, the members will need to contact the respective
personnel in the bar, the pro shop, catering etc. or go to the Club Captain.

“In the short term, for a few weeks anyway, the Club will need to deal with anything that comes along,
which I’m sure they are more than capable of doing.

“There will hopefully be just minor disruption before the new General Manager, Dan Hacker, takes
over in June. I’m not sure when his Assistant will start, but obviously there is bound to be a transition
process into a new set-up in the Office. I wish Mr. Hacker all the best in the role, and hopefully he
enjoys working at Wellingborough Golf Club as much as I did.”

Course was lovely for Ladies Spring Meeting

LADIES Captain Sheena Markham said: “April saw two of our new ladies go through to the national
rounds of the Mizuno Pairs. Helen Marriott and Claire Guest played four matches in the regional
rounds - the last going to the 20th hole at dusk on the County course. Congrats to both, and good luck.

“The Club matches have started too. Good luck to all the ladies playing in the Cecil Leitch teams, the
Ladies League and the Annodata.

“On Tuesday, April 26th, the ladies enjoyed The Spring Meeting. I heard there had been a few
rumblings with reference to the golf course, but I think all the ladies will agree the course was lovely
for our first big day. Thank you to Steve Mackie and his team.

“Many thanks to the gentlemen who had booked to play on the day in the middle of the competition
due to our error in the way the competition was set up, your understanding and help in making
changes was very much appreciated.

“The leading players on the day were in-form Claire Guest (pictured with myself), who finished first
in the Silver Division and Diane Grove, who won Bronze 1, while Linda Simpson led Bronze 2.

Hopefully these ladies will play in the County Centenary
Medals Finals later in the year.

“The winner of the Winter League, with the best five
rounds over nine holes, was Helen Marriott with a total

of 107 points. Helen was presented with the trophy
at the Spring Meeting. Thank you to Miriam for
organising and raising funds for my charity.

“Please look out for the poster advertising

Please save the date.

“Happy golfing all.”

Meg returns to winning ways on LET down under

WELLINGBOROUGH professional Meghan MacLaren made it a hat-trick of career victories down
under on the Ladies European Tour as she clinched the Australian Women’s Classic by one stroke
at Bonville Golf Resort.
With the tournament being shortened to 54 holes due to heavy rain in New South Wales, the 27-year-
old carded scores of 67 and 70 to lead by one going into the final day, when she posted a round of
69 to nudge ahead of Sweden’s Maja Stark.

MacLaren, whose previous two LET wins came in the Women’s
New South Wales Open in 2018 and 2019, sealed her latest victory
with a brilliant back nine that included birdies on the 11th, 14th,
15th and 18th holes.
She said: “It means a lot. It is a little bit surreal right now. When
that putt (pictured left) went in, it was the best feeling in the world.
“I thought I had made the birdie putt on 10. I had a bit of a tricky
start, that’s the thing I am most proud of all week was the fact I
stayed calm, and I knew I was going to play some good golf at
some point and I managed to get it done.
“The people are amazing here and it is a place I feel really
comfortable. I’m going to keep coming back here for the rest of
my career.
“The support was unbelievable - it means the world to me to know
people are rooting for you and they want to see you do well. It really
helps to spur me on, so I owe them a lot.
“Australia is somewhere that I felt comfortable from the very first time I have been here. I don’t know
what it is specifically, if I knew that I’d maybe be able to win more tournaments somewhere else as well.
“I love it here. The people have always been incredibly welcoming. It is somewhere I like to be, and
the golf courses are great and long may it continue.
“Tournaments in Australia bring in players from all over Europe and all across the world, it is great to
see where the women’s game is going and hopefully where it is going to keep going.
“The Women’s New South Wales Open will always be special to me. Coming off the back of a victory,
it is nice to feel comfortable and confident and it reminded me why I love it so much out here.”

8 www.wellingboroughgolfclub.com

MacLaren only made the decision to return to the Ladies
European Tour earlier this month after initially planning to
compete in the USA on the 2022 Epson Tour, which feeds into
the LPGA Tour.

But after finding some form in two LET events in Thailand,
MacLaren won the Australian Women’s Classic pro-am team
prize a few days before the Bonville event, and now sits third in
the 2022 LET Race to Costa del Sol rankings.

Speaking before the Australian Women’s Classic teed off, she
admitted playing on the Ladies European Tour in 2022 would
probably be the best environment to develop her game.

She said: “Last year, I did what was best for me last year,
but that’s not necessarily the same this year. I realised pretty
quickly that by being over there (USA) this year I wasn’t going
to help me get what I wanted out of it.

“I’m at a point in my career where I know what I need to get
better, which environment that requires and which people to
bounce off – and I didn’t feel like I had that in America.

“I find it’s easy to get sucked into a ‘golf is work’ mind-set, especially playing on feeder tours and
that’s never been how I’ve viewed golf. I love golf and it’s all encompassing for me.

“I feel in America I get focused on what I’m shooting and if I’m making cuts and what I need to do
to do well in tournaments, rather than just enjoying that process of knowing I’m better now than I
was two weeks ago or if I can see improvements in different areas.

“But I believe in myself and the longer I’m out here, the more I’m backing myself to achieve what
I think I can.”

Club members chase glory in County tournaments

WELLINGBOROUGH duo Adam Sherlock and Sam Waite came up just short in their bid to clinch
the first County silverware in 2022 as they finished runners-up in the NGL Scratch Foursomes over
36 holes at Overstone Park GC.

The pair looked set for victory in the first Order of Merit event of the year when they posted just one
bogey in an opening round of three-under-par 69 to lead by three at the half way stage.

Although Sherlock and Waite continued to keep the big numbers off their scorecard throughout the
second round, back-to-back bogeys on the last two holes proved costly as Ray Connolly and Jensen
Parfitt came through to snatch victory.

The Collingtree Park partnership birdied the 11th and 13th holes in the afternoon before sealing top
spot with a two on the tricky 17th and another birdie at the last.

Club golfers Leah Ribano and Chelsey Sharp have both put their names down to play in the NGL
County Ladies Championship at Cold Ashby GC from Friday, May 13th.

Cameron Black (pictured below left) is the first Wellingborough member to enter the County Junior
Championship, which takes place at Northants County GC on Monday, May 30th.

The 36-hole tournament, which has a net and gross competition for boys and girls, is the first of eight
events in the 2022 NGL Junior Order of Merit.

Club members are also being encouraged to play in the Collingtree Park Junior Open on Thursday,
June 2nd and the other events this summer at Overstone, Northampton, Cold Ashby, Peterborough
Milton and Northants County.

Wellingborough’s Junior Open, which is being run by www.progressjuniorgolf.com, is the penultimate
competition on the Junior Order of Merit and takes place on Thursday, August 11th.

No April showers, plus cold conditions, leave dry course

HEAD Greenkeeper Steve Mackie sad: “The course has been very dry - unbelievably dry. We can’t
get anything to grow, obviously we can’t force it to grow. There has
been a lack of moisture and a lack of heat - we are struggling.

“The only thing we can do is wait and be patient because
the more productive weather will come. We have had
four days of rain in April - about 18% of the average
rainfall in the month.

“As well as being dry, it’s also cold. You just to have
to look at the trees, there are no leaves on the
trees, especially the big ones. They know what
they’re doing and can do - it’s a simple as that.

“We understand the frustration of the members
but there’s not a great deal we can do about it.
We just have to concentrate on ensuring the
course is in the best condition we can get it.

“At the same time, we could do with some help
because members also need to look after the
course - it’s their course, after all!

“One of our bug bears is tee pegs being left on
the tees (pictured below). If a player can bend
down and put a tee in the ground, then they can
bend down and throw it away once they’ve hit their
shot - not just leave the broken ones on the tee area.

“It’s the same with the etiquette of repairing
pitchmarks on the greens - it’s the members’ golf
course so it’s also their responsibility to look after it.”
