Welcome New Writers 1

We are excited to welcome a new staff of writers
for the 2019-20 school year! The first issue was
completed by over 20 fifth grade students who
gave up their free time to write articles. Our plan
for the year is to complete three more issues.
Fourth and fifth grade writers will be writing the
December issue. For the third issue, we will bring
on third graders. The fourth, and final, issue will
showcase first through fifth graders.

Writing Across Upper Elementary

To start the school year, grades 3-5 have been putting the writing process to use! Starting with
brainstorming, moving into outlining and rough drafting, right into research and editing and

revising before polishing up a final draft.

Third graders have been
planning their informational
writing texts. Students have
explored the many different
text features of informational
writing.

Fourth graders have been
researching “categories” to
become future paragraphs.
They are looking for facts,
examples, thoughts, quotes,
and number/statistics.

Fifth graders have been
working on putting all of their
research skills together. They
started with their
introductory paragraph, and
then peer revised and edited
to ensure the best paragraphs
possible.

Schools Out! 3

By: Luke Filar and Olivia Valenzuela

The last day of school is on May 29, hurray! We are getting out of school early this year
because we don’t have a Spring Break. Sadly, we have the same amount of school. This
is happening because our school is getting rebuilt and they need more time to build (see
page 9). For this year’s winter break, we have off from December 23 through January
1. Spring break has been condensed to four days, April 9-13. Even though the new
calendar is different, you get a longer summer! It’s for a good purpose.

The Granary: What’s Going On?

By: Abby Burke and Taylor Kochanski

In March of 2018, the Sturgeon Bay Historical Society moved the Grainery here in our town
across the Oregon Street bridge, right next to the Frozen Spoon, and then back again in 2019
to its original location.
What is the granary? A lot of people probably don't know what the granary is. It’s a big
building that produces a good quality of grain.
Why was it moved? The granary was moved to avoid a raze, which is an order to knock down
or demolish, order by the Sturgeon Bay fire chief, who believed the building was a risk and
should be torn down.
It all started in March 2018, when the granary was moved across the bridge to the Frozen
Spoon. That move took about four hours. DeVooght House Movers and Lifters moved the
granary. The Burkes’, the DeVooght’s, and Blaney’s also helped with the move. On June 24,
2019, the granary was moved back again to its original location, because it was blocking the
front water view and it smelled.
The team is currently working on a foundation for the granary, to keep it in its original
location in Door County, Wisconsin.

Bus Buddies

By: Aleah Volkmann and Taylor Kochanski

Do you know what bus buddies are? Well, bus buddies are
when fourth and fifth graders take the 4k-ers and the
kindergarteners to the bus. Have you ever wondered if bus
buddies help the teachers? We interviewed Mrs. Heather
Bley and asked her some questions about bus buddies. She
said that bus buddies really help the teachers out. How? It
would take a long time to get all the little kids to the correct
bus. It can also be a handful and very stressful for the
teachers. In order to do this alone, the teachers would have
to end learning earlier, so that they could get the kids to the
bus on time. When we have bus buddies, the teachers don’t
have to worry about getting the kids to the right bus. The
4k and kindergarten teachers trust the fourth and fifth
graders to take the kids to the bus. Next time you see an
older kid taking a younger kid to the bus, you’ll know why.

Homecoming:
5th Graders vs Teachers

By: Trey Albertson and Shaeffer Rass

Do you like football? Well then, did you see the fifth
graders vs teachers football game? It was amazing! It
was on October 18th at 11:30 on the football field. It
was amazing as the students tied the teachers, 21 to
21! Three groups of fifth grade teams took on one tired
team of ten teachers. With a quarter left in the game,
all 38 of the fifth graders who were playing sprinted
onto the field. With seven minutes left on the clock,
the fifth graders scored another, and final, touchdown!

It was a back and forth battle to the end with the 7
students and teachers ending in a 21-21 tie.

What Will Our School Look Like in Two Years?

By: Charlotte Stueber and Hannah Bley

Do you ever wonder what our school will

look like in two years? We know we do.

Here’s your chance to find out.

The companies that will be in charge of

building our new school are Bray

Architects and Miron. Miron will be

floors. 4k-first on the first, and middle and high school on the third. There are two stories and the

first story will be built so it can be added on to in later years if we need more space.

Each classroom will be a little different but they will have some similarities. Some of the similarities

are every classroom will have a sink with a drinking fountain and a bathroom. Classrooms will also

have a separate small group room. Some other cool additions will be a garage door in between the

1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th classrooms with a frosted glass window on the bottom so the kids can’t

get distracted.

We will also have a new playground after the landscaping is finished! Although our football field,

track and nature woods will be staying the

same. We will also have sidewalks, trees,

bushes and other vegetation looping

around the school.

We will truly have a breathtaking,

mind-blowing, astonishing new school, once

all the planning, doing, revising, editing,

building, and landscaping is finally

completed. So look forward to Fall 2021!

Elementary Community Service Projects

This year, Sevastopol elementary students have been hard at work giving back to our
community. Every grade level has volunteered to help give back to something in out

community. Here is what we have accomplished so far this year!

In 4K, we are learning
about community helpers,
such as firefighters, police
men, and EMTs. We even
had snacks with Deputy
Mark so he could teach us
about his important job.

In Kindergarten, we are
learning about animals and
giving back to the humane
society. To start out our
year, we are learning about
what animals need. Our
next step is to have a
veterinarian come talk with
us.

In first-grade, we are
learning about veterans and
the military so that we can
give back to them. To start
out our year, we had Lauren
Junion come in and talk
about the National Guard.
We have also been collecting
items for the Adopt a
Soldier program.

In fourth-grade, we are
learning about how to be
compassionate to, and help
the less fortunate. We
started our year by writing
thank you cards to Feed and
Clothe My People as well as
Habitat for Humanity for
all that they do to help our
community.

In fifth-grade, we are
learning how to care for our
environment. To start our
year, we were on a mission
to clean up our very own
Sevastopol property. We set
out in teams to clean up
trash around the football
field, in front of the school,
and throughout the woods
and playground.
