made the boutique so successful over the years. Story submitted by David Heide

Beyond the common herbs and plants you might find at other gar-

for both medicinal and culinary purposes. But in addition to that,
classes and workshops are being offered to help share valuable tips
in great and healthy organic cooking, herb garden planting and care,
growing and preserving your garden vegetables, and much more.

"Our beliefs are pretty simple: grow what you eat whenever possi-
ble, buy local, and always be aware of and respectful to Earth in all
we do." As an example, Maria recounts her experience at her own
home. "I removed the lawn when I bought my house and replaced it
with what would make me the healthiest and happiest—vegetables
and herb gardens, wildflowers everywhere, and natural beauty most
of all."

As for advice to new gardeners, "Start small, do your research,
grow your favorites and have fun. And check out some of our class-

remembering Mike Bjorn

Kenosha was shocked earlier this year when news spread that the unofficial ‘Mayor
of Downtown’ - Mike Bjorn - passed away on May 30th at the age of 72. Bjorn was
born and raised in Kenosha and had a deep adoration for his hometown. His business,
Mike Bjorn’s Fine Clothing, had been so much more than a clothing store for the past
38 years, but a place that must be seen to be believed. The decor of the store reflects
not only Mike’s eccentric personality, but also his artistic talents. A lifelong musician
and artist, Mike enjoyed creating pieces of art, creating music for others to enjoy, cre-
ating life in his home garden, and, as his closest friends and family could attest to, cre-
ating his opinions and thoughts on the latest hot topics in the world. We asked some
of his friends and peers to share some of their favorite memories of this unforgettable
personality of Downtown Kenosha.

“When Mike got out of the service and I got off the road as a full time musician, Mike Bjorn and Judy Crow married in 1976.
we hooked up and formed a rock band with Ken Duller and Bud McGonegle. This He is survived by his wife, daughter Courtney Bjorn,

“Over the years, we became good friends with Mike Bjorn. He would walk “Mike and I have been friends since we

remembering Mike Bjorn

“If you didn't know Mike Bjorn from Downtown you didn't know Kenosha. Bjorn's
was always a flamboyant store unlike any other. It was all about attraction! Just like

P.T. Barnum, Mike knew how to attract business. Back to the late 1980s, it was
close to Christmas and the stores Downtown were preparing for the shopping rush.

Of course, Mike wanted to do something special. He was into penguins and
dinosaurs then. He asked me if I would help him out with a Christmas gimmick. As
usual, I agreed to help without knowing what was in store for me. His store front was
all decked out and he had a painted gold wheelchair on the awning being lead by a
dozen painted gold, miniature horses, 24k gold leaf!?! Here it comes. Mike wanted
me to wear his infamous Gorilla suit and a Santa Claus hat on Christmas Eve and sit
in the gold wheelchair on the top awning and toss rubber dinosaurs at the children
who gathered below. My eyes rolled as I already agreed to help. Well, I did it. Mike
advertised, and the children were there. I had a ball doing it! Watching the rubber
dinosaurs bouncing off the kids heads and them scrambling to pick them up. I have
a vivid memory of Courtney and Brett and my niece Nancy having a blast along with

the other children who braved the chilly day. There are multiple Mike Bjorn
memories, but this is one of my favorites.”
- John Fox

“Every time I ever saw Mike Bjorn he had a quick, warm, welcoming smile. He also had a well-informed opinion that
he was more than ready to share! I loved listening to his insight on business, politics, and family. He was a pillar of downtown

and will be greatly missed.” - Dana Nelson, Kaisers Pizza & Pub

“Mike Bjorn was a great supporter of Downtown Kenosha; he was on the BID board (and now his son Brett follows in his footsteps)
for many years and kept his business Downtown when the area was at its lowest. He was a man who enjoyed life as much as he could,

always ready for a good time. He was a man of strong opinions, and wasn't afraid to voice them. Artist, teacher, musician, business
man, husband, father, grandfather, friend. Mike was a great character, and Kenosha and especially Downtown, will miss him dearly.”

Q. How long have you been bartending at Swedes?
A. I've been here since September 2017.
Q. What is your specialty drink?
A. An Olson family recipe, our specialty drink at
Swede's is our Old Fashioned.
I know I'm being a bit biased, but it really is the best!
Q. What is your favorite local band?
A. One of my favorite local bands is Cosmic Railroad
and another personal and Swede's favorite is Jeff Kemen.
Q. What do you love about bartending?
A. What I love about bartending at Swede's is that from
the minute you walk in the door, you're treated like family.
I'm not kidding when I say that it's like Cheers,
everyone knows your name, knows your favorite drink,
and is happy to see you!
Q. Do you know any bar tricks?
A. I'm really good at making shots disappear!
Q. What's the best advice you've received across the bar?
A. Sometimes it just takes cheap whiskey
and weird people to have a good time!
Q. What do you love most about Downtown Kenosha?
A. As someone who both lives and works in Downtown
Kenosha, my favorite thing about it is the community.
We all truly care about our special little area of the city!
