Northanger Abbey 3

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Jane Austen was born in 1775. The seventh of eight children, she was raised in the
village of Steventon. Her father, George Austen, was an Oxford-educated clergyman who
supplemented his income with proceeds from farming. Jane and her sister Cassandra
were sent to boarding school for a few years until the family could no longer afford it. She
also had unfettered access to her father’s library. The Austen family enjoyed writing and
performing their own amateur theatricals.
By 1787, Jane was keeping notebooks of her writings. Austen’s stories were read aloud
to her family. By the age of 23, she had created drafts of the books that would become
Northanger Abbey, Sense and Sensibility, and Pride and Prejudice. In 1795, Jane had an
ill-fated romance with the nephew of their neighbors, a law student named Tom Lefroy.
Both families felt an engagement would be impractical since Tom was being supported
by his family while training to be a barrister and Jane’s family could not offer a financial
settlement to make the match. Lefroy’s family sent him away and the families made sure
the pair did not see each other again.
Austen’s father retired in 1800 and the family moved to Bath, which would provide a
setting for part of Northanger Abbey. In 1802, Austen accepted a proposal from Harris
Big-Wither, the wealthy brother of her friend, only to retract the next day. Her father died
in 1805 and Austen, her Mother and her elder sister Cassandra lived in a small house in
Chawton, provided by her brother. It was during this time that four of Austen’s novels
were published anonymously and garnered praise.
She died on July 18, 1817 at age 41, following a protracted illness.
