ABOUT3MT

TheThreeMinuteThesis(3MT),firstdevelopedbytheUniversityofQueenslandandnow
carriedoutinuniversitiesaroundAustraliaandNew Zealand,isacompetitionwhereinPhD
studentspresenttheirresearchprojectstoanon-specialistaudienceinjustthreeminutes.
Some ofthe more prominentuniversities who organise 3MTs annually apartfrom the
UniversityofQueensland,includetheUniversityofMelbourne,theUniversityofWestern
Sydney,the University ofNew South Wales,Victoria University,and the University of
Auckland.

Theideafor3MTcameaboutatatimewhenthestateofQueenslandwassufferingsevere
drought.Toconservewater,residentswereencouragedtotimetheirshowers,andmany
peoplehadathreeminuteeggtimerfixedtothewallintheirbathroom.TheDeanofthe
GraduateSchool,EmeritusProfessorAlanLawson,putthesetwoincidentstogetherandthe
ideaforthe3MTcompetitionwasborn.

Given the stricttimeframe,3MT willcompelstudentsto primarilyfocuson theirproblem
statements,andsubsequently,thewaysinwhichtheirresearchprojectsrepresentconcrete
solutionstotheseproblems.Specifically,studentswillhavetopresenttheirresearchtopics,
theresearchmethodologyand/orresults,aswellastheimpactandcontributionoftheir
research.Allofthe above willtake place in a contextthatisnotonlypublic,butalso
educational,funandcompetitive.

Thecompetitiontestsstudents’abilitiestocommunicatethecontentsoftheirresearchtoa
publicaudiencecomprisingpeopleoutsidethestudents’respectivefieldsofstudy.Boththelay
audienceandthestricttimeframewillenablestudentstoreinforcetheirideasandtoavoid
eitheroverlycomplexterminologyoroversimplification.Todetermineawinner,thecompetition
judging panelwilldecide which among the presentations communicated theirideas
intelligentlyandengaginglytothenon-specialistaudience.

Besides,the3MTcompetitionwillalsoenablestudentstoraisenotonlytheirpublicprofiles,
butalso thatofthe universitytheyrepresent,given the existing media interestin the
competitionoverseas.Itwillensurethattheirresearchprojects,especiallythosethatare
funded,arerelevantandbeneficialtothenationandsociety.Inaddition,studentswhoare
seekingtoraisetheiracademicprofilefortheirfuturecareerswillalsobeabletomeetand
networkwithalargenumberoffellow students,academiciansandresearchersbothinand
outsidetheirfieldsofstudy.

ESLfrom VictoriaUniversity,Wellington,aBac.Ed.(TESL)
from UPM,and MSc and PhD degrees in Language
Educationfrom IndianaUniversity,USA.Whileinservice,
Mardziah’s work focused on English language learning,
discourseinICTenvironmentsandmediacommunication.
ShewasamemberoftheEnglishLanguageStandardsand
Quality Councilappointed by the Malaysian Ministerof
Educationfrom 2014–2020,andoneofthewritersofthe
MalaysianEnglishLanguageEducationReform Roadmap2015-2025.DatinDr.Mardziahhasbeen
activelyhelpingUPM studentspreparefor3MTcompetitionsforthepast7years.

AbdulRashidMohamedShariffisaprofessorinprecision
farming with expertise in spatialinformation science and
engineering.HeholdsaPhDinSpatialInformationScience
and Engineering from the University of Maine, USA.
Obtained his Masters in Cadastre and Land Information
Managementfrom theUniversityofEastLondon,UKanda
Bachelors in Land Surveying from the University of
Technology Malaysia (UTM). He helped catalyze the
precisionfarmingresearchandteachingatUPM andwas
oneofthenationalconsultantsinMalaysia'sfirstnational
paddyprecisionfarmingprojectin2001.Heisafellow and
lifememberofMalaysianSocietyofAgriculturalandFood
Engineers(MSAE),amemberoftheAmericanSocietyof
Agriculturaland BiologicalEngineers(ASABE),currentpresidentand fellow ofthe Institution of
GeospatialandRemoteSensingMalaysia(IGRSM)andamemberoftheinternationalAsia-Ricecrop
estimationandmonitoringteam.Prof.RashidwasanErasmusMundusrecipientwhichsponsoredhis
research/teachinginGermany,andanEndeavourAwardrecipientwhichsponsoredhisresearchin
AustraliaandreceivedinvitationalawardsforattachmentsinJapan,HongKong,andDenmark.Hehas
aScopusH-indexof20andwasawardedtheTopResearchScientistMalaysiaAwardin2018.
