POTENTIAL
It is a privilege to provide my rst report as
the Chief Executive Of cer (CEO) of Sylvanvale. The last year has been a time of unprecedented change both within the sector and at Sylvanvale, which has largely been driven
by our transition into the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).
Since July 2016, 190 of the people we support have transitioned into the NDIS. Sylvanvale invested in pre-planning supports to ensure that existing customers transitioned seamlessly into the scheme. The transition process has been challenging for Sylvanvale with much uncertainty and ambiguity. The rest of our customers will transition into the NDIS from July 2017. Despite the challenges, we remain committed to the philosophy of the NDIS which gives choice
and control to people with disability over their supports and, most importantly, their own lives.
In spite of the challenges, we have achieved an enormous amount over the past year and have had much to celebrate. 2017 marks Sylvanvale’s 70th Anniversary, and to celebrate we launched our new brand and logo to commemorate this important milestone.
Everything that Sylvanvale has achieved over the last 70 years – and everything which we hope to achieve in the future – is because of the support of incredible people like you. My sincere thanks to all the people we support, their families and carers, staff, supporters and the Board of Directors for all your hard work.

BY WORKING
TOGETHER WE WILL
ENSURE SYLVANVALE’S
CONTINUING SUCCESS WELL INTO THE FUTURE.

CHAIRMAN’S
MESSAGE
Our 70th year is a time for both celebration and continuing focus, as we work hard at ensuring people with disability receive the best possible outcomes.
The introduction of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) has resulted in unprecedented change and reform within the disability sector. The transition of our customers into the NDIS has brought Sylvanvale enormous challenges, with the transition journey uncertain and arduous, requiring Sylvanvale to be agile, responsive and networked like never before.
Sylvanvale remains committed to the underlying principles of the NDIS, however its ultimate test will be how well it improves the lives of those with disability.
Meanwhile, we have continued to enhance our internal systems and processes, including launching the online incident reporting system in July 2016 and going live with the NDIS claiming solution in February 2017.
In October 2016, we appointed Leanne Fretten
as our Chief Executive Of cer (CEO). Throughout her career at Sylvanvale, Leanne has continually accepted the challenges and displayed the leadership qualities that are so vital to our success – especially in times of signi cant change. I would also like to thank Pauline Stanley for her enormous contribution over the past two years and for her expertise at such a critical time for Sylvanvale.
I would like to acknowledge the many people that continue to make Sylvanvale successful. I would like to thank our volunteer Board of Directors, our staff, volunteers, funders, supporters, community members and, importantly, the people we support and their families that choose Sylvanvale to be a part of their life.
I extend my thanks to His Excellency General The Honourable David Hurley AD DSC (Ret’d), Governor of New South Wales, for his continuing support as our patron.
On behalf of your Board of Directors, I thank you for your continued support. By working together we will ensure Sylvanvale’s continuing success well into the future.
Jeff McCarthy

“I felt at ease because the teachers and staff were so welcoming to Bas and myself. I knew from then on he would be nurtured and cared for.”
“Bas loves being at Mikarie. His face lights up as soon as we put the school bag in the car. He has made friends and has a really special bond with the teachers.”
Mikarie also arranged for Bas to receive Speech Therapy support at the centre through Sylvanvale Therapist Evelyn. “Having a speech pathologist has enabled Bas to communicate in key word sign and using the iPad, which allows him to express his needs and wants throughout the day.”
Since becoming part of the Mikarie family, Bas has come along leaps and bounds. “I have seen such a huge improvement from when Bas started until now”, says Jordan. “The overall improvement just from when he started until now is remarkable. Mikarie has helped optimise his preparedness for school next year, which is so comforting for us.”
“We are very sad that this is Bas’s last year at Mikarie. Bas and I will both miss Mikarie dearly and the strong bonds formed over the past year.”
“We are very blessed to have found Mikarie. Thank you team Mikarie!”

“a lot of research into child care centres that are inclusive and supportive of children with disabilities.”
“Knowing that Mikarie had such a well structured environment that included all types of children really made me feel so comfortable,”
explains Jordan.

KEN’S
AN EXCITING NEW JOB
Ken is really interested in airplanes. Coincidentally Ken’s key support worker, Cruice, had previously worked for an airline packaging company. So Cruice asked Ken if he would like to try getting some work experience there, which Ken was very keen on.
Ken now works there each Friday, labelling and packing, including putting stickers on pasta boxes and putting headphones into bags. He is very happy with his job, “My job makes me proud, because I’m helping the community.” He has also made friends, and has a good friend called Jake.
What’s more, all the people who live with Ken now work there on a Friday too.
According to Cruice, Ken’s job has, “made Ken more con dent, enabled him to meet new friends and is potentially opening new doors for him. I’m very proud of him.”
KEN’S GOLD COAST HOLIDAY
Ken’s other big achievement this year has been his trip to the Gold Coast. According to support worker Warren, “Ken had been wanting to go to the Gold Coast for a couple of years – it was
his dream.”
Ken put a lot of effort “researching on the internet about what to do on the Gold Coast.” Working alongside Ken was Service Leader Russell and his team, who spent hours planning every aspect
and possibility in detail, to ensure it was a resounding success.
In June 2017, Ken’s dream became a reality and he spent four days in the Gold Coast, accompanied by two Sylvanvale support workers. Everything went smoothly and Ken visited everywhere he wanted to go. “I had a good time”, says Ken.
STORY
Ken lives in Supported Independent Living at Sylvanvale. At the start of the year, he had two big goals. Ken really wanted to get work experience because, “I wanted to ll in my time” and he wanted to go to the Gold Coast “because I like travelling and wanted to go to Sea World, Movie World and Australia Zoo.”

The new contemporary logo has been very well received by customers and supporters alike. The new modern logo represents independence in the new NDIS environment. The refreshed “S”swoosh element
symbolises choice and individualisation and these elements join in the centre to symbolise connection and partnership.
Our supporters and the individuals we support have now begun to see the new Sylvanvale logo in the community as we celebrate our 70th anniversary with events, a new look website, new marketing collateral and beautifully branded buses and cars proudly displaying the new Sylvanvale branding.
INNOVATIONS
A NEW LOOK IN OUR 70TH YEAR
Sylvanvale’s 70th anniversary provided
an opportunity to remind the community about our strong history and to share the inspirational stories of our founding families and, most importantly, the individuals we have supported. It was also an opportunity to share our vision for the future and invite
a new generation to learn about Sylvanvale and consider us as a partner in the delivery of their support needs through the NDIS.
This anniversary, along with the NDIS rollout, presented an opportunity to celebrate and modernise the Sylvanvale brand. Our visual identity needed to re ect who we are – an innovative organisation that is ready to successfully support our customers in the new NDIS operating environment. With this in mind in February 2017 we launched our new logo and branding.

OUR
INNOVATIONS
TECH KNOW
The initiative – called ‘Tech Know’ – involves a group of people that Sylvanvale supports, aged 18 to 24 years, who have an interest in technology. These young people with disabilities are mentored by year 11 and 12 Newington College students, giving the people we support and other young people the opportunity to interact and connect through shared interests in a meaningful and mutually bene cial way, rather than the people we support simply being observers.
The past year has seen Sylvanvale participants learn new skills through the Tech Know program including proper use of email, appropriate use
of social media and how to use Word and Excel documents. The group has also focused on online safety for our customers and has had a lot of fun playing computer and console games.
Will Russell, General Manager Community Options, said “It has been beautiful to see the bond grow between the people Sylvanvale supports and Newington College Students. Our participants’ social skills are improving and they are becoming so creative in their thinking”.
The participants in Tech Know are working together, developing an innovative ‘mouse pad’ charging station that would enable multiple devices to charge from a single location without the devices having to be plugged into it.
The Tech Know initiative recognises that technology plays a big part in all young people’s lives, regardless of ability. It provides young people with disabilities with guidance, coaching and information in the technology space. Traditionally, when it comes to people with disability and technology, the focus in the community has been on assistive technologies. Tech Know focuses on a separate, much-needed area which tends to be overlooked in relation to people with disability. This program recognises that people with disability also need to be included in discussions and training
around technology.
The Tech Know participants, their families and Sylvanvale staff are proud to be a part of this innovative program that is having a positive impact of the lives of young people with disability.
– A UNIQUE PARTNERSHIP
2016 saw the creation of a beautiful partnership between Sylvanvale and Newington College
– an independent high school in Sydney’s Inner West. We partnered to create an initiative incorporating young people and the use
of technology.
