If you sit and chat with Kendra
Fleischman you’ll discover how
delightful she is, not only as a gifted
and talented artist, but also as a
passionate person who is forever
seeking new and innovative ways
to express herself artistically. As a
Colorado native, she grew up in
Jefferson County and attended Arvada
West High School where she met Jeff,
her husband of 30 years. Together, they
are the parents of two grown daughters,
Rachel and Heather.

Over the past three decades Kendra
has constantly developed and grown
as a professional sculptor. Because
her parents encouraged her to express
herself without judgment, she feels free
to experiment with different mediums.
Her father, Ken has always been a
strong supporter of her work and even
helped with the first castings of her
early work.

Her work is very evocative and has
a unique, recognizable style no matter
what media she’s working in. Kendra
will tell you that movement, dance in
particular, has always been a motivating
factor in the expression of her work.

Her love for sculpting started at an
early age. When she was just seven, she
liked digging down in her backyard
sandbox to get to the clay to mold
shapes from this natural source. In
grade school she was recognized as
the class artist as her classmates loved
asking her to draw things for them.

In 1981, as a junior in high school,
Kendra and her father Ken took a
bronze sculpture class at the county
parks and recreation department. It was
there that her real love of working with
bronze took shape. She sculpted a 12
inch tall, finely-detailed unicorn that
really left her feeling proud and curious
to learn more about sculpture.

After high
school, Kendra
attended
Colorado State
University in
Fort Collins,
where she
believed the art
department was
very progressive.
CSU was also
well known for
its education
program, so she thought it was practical
to get her teaching degree as well. At
CSU she remembers her sculpture
studies with Gary Voss. “He introduced
me to stone carving and also to bronze
casting. We actually got to do the
molding, the pouring, all of it. Just
trying to lift a crucible full of molten
metal, which is so heavy and so hot,
was amazing.”
Voss encouraged her to think about
her goals as an artist. “He wanted me
to go past the obvious and I came to
realize that it was not enough to make
something pretty.” Going with her self-

“At the start of my career I was all about dance.
Most of my work was exploration of the

body moving through space. Now I am exploring how
all sorts of things move through time.”

expression she created “ORIGIN” in
1986, a sculpture that she carved from
a block of alabaster. This unique piece
awakened her creative spirit and set
her on a course that she said, “was me
leaving realism behind.” This piece is
not only pleasing to the eyes but reveals
her emergence as a sculptor. Her work
gained recognition from her family,
teachers, and fans alike. She said, “My
dad was just so jazzed by it.” In fact,
his enthusiasm for the sculpture was so
great that after his daughter graduated
from CSU in 1987 with high distinction,
Ken Ball took it upon himself to have
the original ORIGIN piece turned into a
bronze, in an edition of fourteen.

In addition to becoming an
accomplished artist herself, Kendra
has spent over 20 years teaching art to
others. In fact, she is often so inspired
by her students’ work, that it leads her
to discover new ways to express herself.

Recently, she’s become fascinated
with motion and animation. She has
taken physical art and incorporated
digital multimedia into a fascinating
blend that brings life to otherwise
inanimate pieces. In 2011, Kendra was
a featured solo artist at the Lakewood
Civic Center. There she presented
an exciting and unique show that
demonstrated her fun and whimsical
mixture of digital and physical art.

In 2016 Kendra was a featured
artist in the “Movement Studio” at
the Denver Art Museum. This was

HIGHlights of Hemp as an Alternative Food Source

According to GrubHub Inc., an online and mobile food ordering
company, the demand for trending health foods such as chia
seeds and quinoa increased more than 100 percent in the last
year. Hemp grew 110 percent with women in the past year, which
bested the demand for chia seeds in the GrubHub study. (www.

So what exactly is hemp? As a plant, hemp is an annual.
Herbaceous with long fiber, it is similar to flax (linen), jute and
ramie. Grown from a seed, it can get up to 15 to 20 feet tall.
Although hemp is a variety of Cannabis Sativa—a “relative” plant
of the same plant species as marijuana— it has many positive
qualities—and it won’t make you “high.” Unlike marijuana, it has
lower concentrations of THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) and higher
concentrations of Cannabidiol (CBD), which decreases or eliminates
its psychoactive effects.

Hemp has been grown for at least the last 12,000 years for fiber
(textiles and paper), as well as for food. What’s more, of the 3
million-plus edible plants that grow on Earth, no other plant source
can compare with the nutritional value of hemp seeds. Hemp is
edible as whole seeds, hulled seed (the hemp “nut” or “heart”),
protein powder, or as oil extracted from seeds. Hemp plants
produce seeds that contain between 25-35% oil by weight.

This non-trans-fatty-acid oil is high in a perfect balance of
essential fatty acids (EFAs: Omega-3, 6, 9) considered to be
necessary to maintain health. Hemp’s EFA profile provides a
healthy alternative to fish, which often contain elevated levels of
mercury and other toxins. Hemp seeds are also high in magnesium,
a mineral that helps with relaxation, blood sugar control, blood
pressure, and potentially osteoporosis. Magnesium levels are
generally lower in women than men.

The Hemp Industries Association (HIA) estimated that the
retail value of North American hemp food, vitamin and body care
products was in the range of $156 to $171 million in 2012. When
clothing, auto parts, building materials and other non-food or body
care products are included, the HIA estimates that the total retail
value of U.S. hemp products is about $500 million.

At one point, the Drug Enforcement Administration attempted
to ban food products made from hempseed meal or oil. However,
in 2004, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals overruled it, saying hemp
food contained a negligible amount of intoxicant. Since then, hemp
food and body care product sales have grown steadily.
