Presidents Message

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the Gilpin County Arts
Associations 72nd Annual Juried Show! It has been my challenge and honor
to lead Gilpin County Arts Association into the near future and to continue
a 72 year tradition of bringing the fine arts to Central City. The incredible
amount of skill, talent and craftsmanship exhibited by the artists in this
year’s show is second to none. As you browse the galleries do take in the
beautiful art before you, but also absorb the historic nature of the space
that surrounds the art and you will see a combination of interior space
and fine art like no other. This space as much as the art, the artists and our
membership is why myself and my fellow board members feel an inherent
importance to continue to perpetuate what those before have left for us to
continue. It is more than arts association, more than an art gallery, it is more
than a community, it’s a legacy.
The body of work before you as selected by our esteemed jurors shows a
variety of form of subject matter, mediums and approaches that reflect the
art of today but also captures the classic sense of the mastery of each artist.
As in every year past, we are so impressed with this year’s submissions as
they not only give us an opportunity to view new art but gives us an the
opportunity to build a relationship with the artists as well, our goal as an
association.
Many thanks go out to so many of our volunteers, our staff and the City of
Central for their efforts in continuing the ongoing mission of the GCAA. I
would be remiss to not give a personal thank you to each of our board
members, past and present for all their efforts in preparing for this year’s
show; it has been a pleasure to work beside you!

Kindest Regards,
Eric Miller
GCAA President

Judge’s Statement

The role of the artist, whether writer, poet, musician, dancer, sculpture,
jewelry maker, painter, photographer and others, is to remind us that beauty
exists. Beauty is found all around us and recognizing it is as essential to the
world and human condition as rain, food, sunshine, air, and love.
I believe as artists we are giving an answer back to the original statements
found in the created world around us. As artists we have the sensitivity and
awareness to hear the voices, sights and sounds of our time and express
the beauty that surrounds us. We have the skills and desire to interpret
these things for others and express them. These expressions are what we
humbly call art.
With so many beautiful and evocative entries in this exhibition, jurying was
no easy task! I know how much each artist pours heart and soul into every
piece of their work. When I jury a show, I look for pieces that speak beauty
to me. I look for elements of story first and foremost. I am drawn to pieces
that have a well told visual narrative in color, style, or meaning. Next, I look
at design, format, the internal voice of the piece, and lastly, execution of
the technical qualities of the art.
I admire the courage it takes for any artist to put their work before an
audience. Which entries get into a show and which pieces deserve awards
is dependent upon each individual juror. Every artist who submitted to the
show and every piece displayed is worthy of celebration. We sometimes
forget how vulnerable this process can feel.
I applaud each artist in this exhibition for taking their place, telling
beautiful stories, and encouraging each of us to carry on.
Peace, love, art.
Steve Griggs, artist
