Celebrating his 63rd year in the music industry

Pages 6 & 7

Joanne Johnson

Variety is the spice in my art. When I see something interesting or
that moves me, I usually take a photo of it. After some editing (taking
out the unnecessary or adding to) I paint using charcoal, pastels or oil.
I love bringing subjects to life on the canvas. My art is inspired by my
experiences living and working in Oregon, Montana and Nevada. I see
beauty in people, nature and in animals. Subjects can be found
anywhere, and at any time. Orderville was from a stop off the roadway.
Glacier was from a photo my daughter took.

I approach art from how the light touches
the subjects and casts and a reflective look.
Certain facials expressions are especially
intriguing with all age groups. Bird on Watch - OIL

I’m never bored when I’m painting.
My studio is a converted bedroom
where the light is good and I listen to
mainly classical music. It’s a good life!

John has traveled to over 30 states and nearly a dozen countries,
creating photographic art along the way. His interest and passion for john whalen
photography started around the age of eight when his grandmother
gave him a Kodak Brownie Hawkeye Camera. John also has a degree
in occupational therapy (1983) and advanced diplomas in massage
therapy (2006).

John joined the City Lights Art Gallery in Henderson NV in October 2017 as a member.
He became a Gallery Board Member (at large) in January 2019. John, along with other
Gallery members are in the planning stages for the Inaugural All Photography Juried
Show in June, 2019. In addition, he, along with other members are writing a grant to
obtain funds to bring hands-on art to the children of the Las Vegas area through the City
Lights Art Gallery.
The key to his photo success is that he shoots for the emotion of the moment to
tell the story. Two original quotes John utilizes when teaching others about
photography are: Take pictures that YOU like and I can show you where to look, but I
can’t teach you how to see.

JENNY RIDDICK

Jenny started her art career early when she was in
grade school in Ohio. Her first work, while in the
6th grade, was an original 3-D poster of Betsy Ross
sewing the American Flag for a competition themed,
Patriotic. Using fabric and paper, her poster won
Best in Show. While in her senior year of high
school, she began work as a commercial artist
(design and silkscreen).
As life would have it, Jenny’s family moved to Denver,
Colorado and other professions called to her. She spent
10 years as a corporate and securities paralegal while
earning a Bachelor of Science in Accounting, and then
she spent 25 years as an international tax accountant in
the world’s largest firms of Pricewaterhouse Coopers and
Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, traveling the world (Canada,
Mexico, Peru, Chile, England, India Singapore and
others), learning other countries’ tax systems as well as
their cultures.

Life decided to change her course again in 2010 when
health matters and the death of her husband of 20+ years
necessitated her retirement from public accounting.
Having no family left in Colorado, she moved to
20 Shades of Gray Mesquite, Nevada. Her family there introduced her to
the Mesquite Fine Arts Gallery. Her love of art came
rushing back like a flood and she picked up a brush once
again to paint after 38 years of pursuing her corporate
career.

Having grown up in rural Ohio, her parents indulged her
love of animals surrounding her with every sort, from
horses to snakes and all manner of creatures in between,
and that love of animals continues to this day and is the
fire of her inspiration. She is currently doing a series of
horses, and offers commission watercolor portraits of
pets and animals.

Artisan Magazine’s photographer, Eric Courtney, recently went to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, or PVR!
On his way to the hotel he couldn’t help but realize how many spectacular photographic
opportunities there were. Of course, he had his photography equipment with him,
and was able to capture many amazing images, some of which are pictured here.
(The beautiful background on these pages is of Banderas Bay).

There’s an abundance of
wall art throughout PVR!
“OPTICA” is just one
example of how colors and
visuals are used to identify
businesses.
Notice there are no neon
lights or ashing signs, yet
each business is easy to
identify!

An opportunity came up to take a
whale watching cruise, and Eric
jumped on it! He learned that during
certain times of the year humpback
whales migrate to Banderas Bay in
search of a mate. The Captain of the
ship warned the passengers that
when the whales breach the water, it
happens very quickly.
Eric had his camera ready and was
able to capture images of not just
one, but two whale breaches! A truly
amazing experience, to say the least.

Some may wonder if it’s possible
for food to be considered “art”.
Eric will let you be the judge, for
he enjoyed capturing many
images of the colorful drinks and
detailed food presentations!!!

Eric Courtney

As the sun sets over Banderas Bay, the early evening
skies come alive with bright hues. The gentle
rolling of the waves, along with the magni cent
colors, makes it one of the most relaxing times
of the day, and Eric cannot wait to visit again!

Any of the images seen here are available for purchase
in a variety of mediums through Eric’s virtual store
which can be accessed via his website, www.edc856.com
You’ll be able to learn more about Eric on the site,
plus also view more images from his portfolio.

At the risk of being glib again, the best way to determine what kind of art appeals to you
is to view some. Just like those first bites of ice cream or broccoli your mom gave you as an

infant, artistic tastes are cultivated through exposure; not pictures in a book or onliine, but
the way art was intended to be viewed - in person. This could be an emerging artist’s
paintings at the local art fair, or a Master’s exhibition at a National museum, but the
important thing is to experience it. Of course, the more exposure you have, the more acute
your artistic senses will become. Who knows? Just like that broccoli you spit out as a child,
you may eventually acquire a taste for art you didn’t like at first (or at least learn to tolerate
it!)

To that end, reputable art galleries like Art
encounter, which offer well-regarded artists at a
variety of price points, can serve as a springboard
for the neophyte collector. A trusted gallery can
help match a collector with appropriate art, as
well as provide insight regarding an artwork’s
technique and history. It’s a “value added” service
that is both literal and figurative - enhancing both
the personal experience of collecting art, as well as

adding literal value to the works through proper
vetting and authentication.

THE POCKET PICKER FOR FINE ART
by BRETT MALY

Since I referenced value, I suppose
I should mention that fine art has an
average annual return value of 10%
over the past four decades, and has
become one of the safer financial
investments you can make. Much
more than that, however, art is an
CURTIS DOWLING FROM THE TV SHOW, investment in your daily quality of life.
TREASURE DETECTIVES WITH BRETT Art is an investment in the future of
your children and the preservation of

your culture.

ART IS AN INVESTMENT YOU CAN’T AFFORD TO MISS OUT ON

When you walk into Southwest Diner, one of Boulder City’s
favorite gathering places for locals and tourists alike, you will take a
step back in time.

Whether you are young and re-living stories told by older family members, or like some of us, remembering
our younger days, it’s wonderful to enjoy the historic collection that adorns the walls and floor space, that was
actually used through the years. Collectibles are preserved for future generations to enjoy. As you wait for your
order to be delivered, you know, without a doubt, that this is a place where Nevada’s rich history is carefully
preserved.

Cindy Ford and her talented family bring to their customers the fine art of delicious family dining and the fine
art of the collectibles that shaped the history of Nevada and Boulder City, in particular; a highly unusual
community that takes pride in presenting its businesses and dedicated art pieces adorning the picturesque
streets and walls of many of the one-of-a-kind shops. You find yourself reaching for your camera in order to
document this amazing place.

Cindy Ford and her children happily work together to bring to their guests lovingly
preserved recipes handed down from family members who actually used many of the art
forms on display, thus producing collectible art, through their day-to-day tasks. “Look!
There’s a stove like the one my grandmother used!” On any given day you can overhear
table mates commenting on the collection these memories evoke.

The ownership of Southwest Diner is a family of artists in their own right. Like a
conductor, Cindy carefully oversees the business that is directly responsible for Southwest
Diner’s twenty-six years of continuing success. The baking skills of Cindy’s son, Jake Ford,
have brought the delectable desserts he produces to a fine art level. Daughter, Sara Olson’s artistic talent is
displayed through her photographic skills produced on ARTISAN’s cover, and the two pages of this article.

Whether planning a visit to Boulder City as a tourist, or a special way to treat
friends and family as a local, put the Southwest Diner at the top of your list. There
are comments from guests, shown on these pages, who have enjoyed breakfast, lunch
and dinner, time and time again. An historic comment that goes along with the
displayed history is, “The proof of the pudding is in the eating.” As my dear
grandmother used to say in her Southern accent, “That is a truism, sugar!”

Southwest Diner is located at 761 Nevada Highway, Boulder City, Nevada
Their telephone number is 702.293.1537 or visit them on the web at
