WAREHOUSINGTODAY
thepast,a warehousewasonly seenasa place
fn
Ito storethings.[t oftentookup a lot of ground
spaceand goodswere usually picked by handor
using a fork-lift truck.
During the last few years, however, the role andthe
designofthe warehousehaveradicallychanged.
The warehouseis now considereda critical link
betweena manufacturingplant andthe external
world with a strongimpact on the performanceof
the entire manufacturingandlogistics system.
Warehouseautomationandcomplex technologiesare now usedin order to produceeffective
operations.Many warehousestoday areequippedwith warehousemanagementsystems
(WMS), which automatethe product flow throughoutthe warehouseand maximize the use
ofwarehousespacethrougheffectivepicking methods,locationconsolidationandcross
docking.
Automated StorageandRetrieval Systems(ASiRS) havebeenintroducedin many
warehouses.AS/RS involves high-racking storagewith a machineoperatingwithin the aisles,
servingboth sidesofthe aisle.Thesesystemscanpick, replenish,andperform inventory
checkswithout a humanoperator.
In fully automatedsystems, conveyor belts arevery important asthey link the different areas
of the warehouseandcarry the goodsto where they arerequired:for examplebetweenthe
receiving areasandreservestorage,or betweenthe picking andloading areas.
The warehouseoftoday would be unthinkable without the barcode. The barcodelabel on each I
item provides specific information aboutthe product, which canbe transferredto a computer
system. This makesit possibleto locatethe item's positionin the warehouseandfind it 2
again.By usingautomatedtechnology,suchasbarcodescannersandRFID (radiofrequency
identification), warehouseinventory andproduct flow canbe efficiently mana-eedC. ombined
with modern IT systems, barcodesenablewarehousestaff to track andtraceall items in the
warehouseat anygiventime andusuallyin realtime.
