SCHOOL CREST

The eagle represents strength of character with outspread wings, looking west, guarding the virtues of
the school embodied within the school crest. The contoured shape and design of the crest is reminiscent
of the badges of the guardians of the civilian society signifying discipline. Above its head and outspread
wings, the initials of the school take position and precedence.

Within the crest, the school’s virtues are contained in four symbols at the lower half of the eagle. Two
clasped hands form the shape of a heart symbolising the school’s aspiration to create individuals who will
serve the needs of the community. The atomic symbol represents the need to be technologically oriented
as mankind explores the realms of the digital age and cyber space.

An unconventional square bulb symbolises imaginative thinking to help nurture creative minds. A
flaming torch representing life-long learning is placed over a scroll signifying academic excellence, the
former taking precedence over the latter. And finally, displayed at the base of the crest, is the school
motto reinforcing the courage of the eagle.

PRINCIPAL’S FOREWORD

2016 is a significant year for Jurong West Secondary
School (JWSS) as it is the school’s 15th Anniversary.
Hence, it is with much pleasure and great pride that
we share this year’s Yearbook with you. Established
in 2001 and as a relatively young school, the school
has indeed many milestones and achievements,
both in terms of academic results as well as co-
curricular achievements, staff, students, parents and
stakeholders can be very proud of.
In line with the theme of the school’s 15th Anniversary
Celebrations - Cherishing Memories, Celebrating
Successes and Chasing Dreams - the 2016 Yearbook
captures the vibrant as well as holistic educational
experience students get at JWSS and the dynamic
staff culture that has made the past and present
successes possible. In the last two years, the school
has also established several programmes of quality
that make JWSS distinctive in how we nurture our
students and equip them skills as well as values to
make them future ready.
Well poised to build on its foundation and
achievements, the school with its vision to be a
values-centred community where learning is ignited
by passion, thinking driven by innovation and leading
inspired by service, looks forward to an exciting
future to scale even greater heights.
My staff and I look forward to many more rewarding
years of working together with students, parents,
stakeholders and the community to continue
engaging the hearts and minds of our students to
develop them to their full potential thus enabling
them to fulfill their aspirations and contribute as
active citizens in society.
Mr Michael Muhunthan

Valedictory Speech of 15th Anniversary Speech Day

Good evening to our Guest of Honour, Mr Joseph Foo, Mr Michael, Parents, Teachers, Prize-winners, Ladies and
Gentlemen. I am Jared from 4E1’15 and I am honoured to be chosen as the valedictorian for the class of 2015.
Firstly, I would like to thank the teachers who have helped my schoolmates and me through the difficulties we
faced during our four years in JWSS. I would also like to thank my Co-Curricular Activity (CCA), the Boy’s Brigade,
for being a wonderful community and for motivating me to set and achieve greater goals. Both my academic
journey as well as my CCA have played no small role in my secondary school life, and have left lasting imprints
on my development as a student. Thus, today I will be sharing about some of my experiences and lessons learnt
in these two areas.
In the four years I spent in this school, I have gained numerous experiences, skills as well as values. When I
first chose this school, I never imagined I would learn to climb a rock wall, paddle a canoe or even be tasked
with leadership roles such as managing a group of my schoolmates. I would certainly not have graduated from
secondary school with the same fond memories and rich experiences had I enrolled into another school or CCA.
As a school, Jurong West Secondary has provided me with a safe study and play environment which allowed me
to learn from my failures and get back on my feet. It has helpful and compassionate teachers who are willing to
go the extra mile just to ensure we do well. They stay back after school to give consultation lessons, provide extra
assignments for us to practice on and also motivate us to do better whenever we feel like giving up. For example,
the countless revision packages that Mr Sia had to offer. As much as they were gruellingly tough to complete on
time, they definitely served their purpose in helping us improve on our Math. Without those packages that Mr
Sia put in his hard work to compile, I probably could not have understood calculus as well as I can now. Not only
Mr Sia, but many of my other subject teachers have also done the same, including Ms Chin who provided extra
English oral practice, Ms Viknes for helping in my Social Studies and even my form teacher Mr Kwek. I am sure
that I speak on behalf of my cohort when I say that we have been fortunate and blessed with committed and caring
teachers. These teachers in JWSS certainly pushed me to excel, and to achieve the results I have today.
Besides that, the Boys’ Brigade played a key role towards my success. As a small and innocent boy in Secondary
One, I was oblivious to the school environment. I did not know what stress was; neither did I know what true
friendship was. However, through my education in this school, I found that whenever I felt low, I had my BB mates
to rely on. They were my pillars of support, helping me emotionally whenever I needed their support.
In addition, I am also grateful for being presented with the chance to be the Company Sergeant Major (CSM)
of BB. As a leader, I got to lead my batch mates and juniors in our weekly parades and had to take care of their
wellbeing. This added responsibility helped foster in me a sense of servant hood. I realized that serving is vital
towards being a good and respected leader, as trust has to be built before followers rally cooperatively alongside
their leader. The Boy’s Brigade has undoubtedly been one of the greatest influences in my life, providing me with
the supportive peers and the set of skills and values which make up who I am today. With that, I believe that BB
can continue being a nurturing and caring place for boys to learn and grow.
I am currently pursuing my A-Levels in Pioneer Junior College and I have come to appreciate the skills and values
I gained in my time at JWSS. For one, I am more confident in the way I carry myself, and this has enabled me to
engage in conversations with my new classmates and adjust to a new environment at a faster pace. In addition,
I am also able to give presentations more comfortably in front of groups of people even though I used to get
nervous. For all the ways JWSS has prepared me for this next phase in life, I am grateful.
If there is one piece of advice I could give to the current batch of graduating students, it is to be consistent.
Studying for each and every test diligently will contribute to the final result. That said, do not overexert yourselves
since it is only the start of the year. Make sure you take breaks once in a while to unwind and revitalise. In the end,
what matters most is not the result printed on the result slip, but whether you are confident that you have given
your best for the examinations. With that, I would like to end with a quote from David Burns:
“Aim for success, not perfection. Never give up your right to be wrong, because then you will lose the ability to
learn new things and move forward with your life.”
Once again, thank you very much for this opportunity and I am indeed very proud to be an alumnus of JWSS.
I wish the school many more successful years of nurturing students to give their best.

Sec 3 Level Camp

For three days and two nights, the
Secondary Three cohort embarked on an
adventure to Kota Tinggi in Johor, Malaysia.
Teachers and students alike were excited
to journey together, immersing themselves
in Malaysia’s culture while being exposed
to a range of outdoor activities. On the first
day, the students conquered low and high
element activities which challenged them
both physically and mentally. The students
were also taught to make cultural handicrafts
like paper baskets, kites and even their own
batik print. No camp would be complete
without a campfire, and this was no
exception. The camp ended on a high note,
with students gathered around the campfire
to the rousing sound of their class cheers.
