NOTES
A NOTE FROM DIRECTOR JOEL FENSTER
It’s an age old question.
Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?
If you’re reading this at our show, you know the answer. Or you may think you do.
Contrary to popular “belief”, animation isn’t just for children. It has always been for all ages. Sure,
there are some pieces geared towards certain ages, but the stuff that becomes part of the Zeitgeist
or Pop Culture is for everyone.
While I came to Spongebob Squarepants later in life through my kids, I grew up in the 70s on
endless reruns of Bugs Bunny and Bullwinkle and Hanna-Barbera…and graduated to The
Simpsons and Ren & Stimpy and Animaniacs as I got older. Each of these have levels of humor
that work for different ages. And each of them features oddball characters trying to fit in and survive
in a world that they didn’t create, but want to help change for the better.
These characters have families, the make friends, they join a community. They support one
another.
Theater is a lot like that. Life is a lot like that.
There are a number of families involved in this show…if you read the program you’ll see multiple
Newsoms, Fensters, Watsons, Dahlstroms, and Novins (and our Sandy is married to our Stage
Manager). At the same time, the cast and crew have become a larger family through this process of
creating this show. We are all from different places in life, but we all want the same goal: to put on a
show that will give you back some joy in your lives for a few hours when the world can sometimes
be a dark and cold place these days.
The message of this show is one of the unique and maybe misunderstood reaching out to claim
their place in the world and being accepted for who they are and not for how they look or act or
present themselves.
So I ask again: Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?
We all do.
Thanks for coming to the show. May you have the best day ever today and every day going
forward.
All my best, always…

A NOTE FROM FCS ARTISTIC DIRECTOR CHRISTY MCINTOSH-NEWSOM
Welcome to Fairfield Center Stage's final show of our 2021/22 season! We are beyond grateful to
be here and producing THE SPONGEBOB MUSICAL, after a postponement due to Omicron. This
postponement also caused us to lose our initial venue for the show, but Fairfield Ludlowe High
School absolutely saved the day and served as our incredible hosts for this joyful, fun, hilarious and
heartfelt musical. We extend our sincerest thanks to Ludlowe's Principal, Greg Hatzis, as well as to
Facilities Scheduling Coordinator Miriam O' Donnell, Assistant to the Principal Regina Ryan, Robert
Brunetti and the entire custodial staff, and to Sam Eckhardt, for helping us bring Bikini Bottom to
Fairfield!
We hope that you will join us for the start of our 2022/23 season in September for "La Cage aux
Folles" (which many of you have seen in its movie version, "The Birdcage!") at Trevi Lounge, and
for our fifth annual "A Christmas Carol Experience" at Burr Mansion.
Thank you so much for being here today and supporting live theatre. Please spread the word about
this show, and share the gift of theatre with your friends and family! We hope that you have "the
best day ever" with this amazing cast. Sit back, enjoy, and welcome to our pineapple under the sea!
