questions must again be asked, why much smaller projects are

Fully Licensed Peterhead Councillor Alan S. Buchan said, ‘there is little doubt
that these towns need a boost but a number of far less costly
BUFFETS projects have been either cancelled or delayed in Peterhead.
For example, the Council refused to rebuild the burnt out
Friday & Sunday 5pm-Late Bowling Pavilion despite having insurance money and the
reserves to do so at a fraction of the cost of the Leisure/Sports
Complex at Macduff. The Council will not replace the Peter-
head Academy windows leaving pupils to freeze for a decade
or more which would have cost less than 1% of the Macduff
complex. These anti-Peterhead moves were fully supported by
the non-local Nats who are supposed to represent Peterhead.’
There are elections this week, when are the people of
Peterhead going to stop supporting the Nats who don’t live in
our town, who have provided a £150,000,000 holiday camp
and £100,000,000 of public money to uphold the ‘Human
Rights’ of murders and muggers while Peterhead’s food banks
rocket and leisure and educational facilities are in a shambles.

ChildLine offers support to children and parents

as calls about exam stress increase
Vital helpline reveals a five per cent increase in calls from school pupils worried about their exams
Last year ChildLine’s bases in Glasgow and Aberdeen handled 524 calls from children relating to exam
pressures, an increase from 499 in 2014-15.1 Over a fifth of calls about exams takes place in May with pupils
especially worried about the pressures ahead.
Many young people feel the pressure as they don’t want to disappoint their parents. The fear of failure and the
general pressures linked to academic achievement are just some of the reasons why children call ChildLine.
Over 2,000 pupils call ChildLine in Scotland every year about problems at school and home. Counsellors at
the helpline offer support and advice to young people round the clock.
Elaine Chalmers, service head at ChildLine in Scotland, said: "The exam period can be a very stressful and
anxious time for young people. As these figures reveal, the pressure to do well is being felt by an increasing
number of young people across the country.
“They often think that this is their last chance to make something of their lives and this is not the case.
Teachers parents and of course ChildLine are here to offer advice and support to young people as well as help
them to look at all options for the future. We hear from lots of young people each year who are anxious,
worried or panicking about their exams and revision. There can be many factors which can lead to an increase
in exam stress such as problems at home, bereavement, bullying and health issues. We want to let them know
that they’re not alone and that ChildLine is here to listen, offer support and help when they need to talk.
”ChildLine offers help 24 hours a day every day for any child that feels anxious or worried about exams.”
One teenage boy who spoke to a ChildLine Scotland counsellor in the Glasgow base said: “I’ve been feeling
really confused and like there is no way out. Talking to a counsellor really helped me to look at things from a
different perspective. I feel like I’m in a much better place now and things are starting to make sense.”
Stresses about exams affected young people’s ability to sleep, trigger anxiety attacks, depression and eating
disorders. In some cases it can also lead to self-harm and suicidal feelings or make them worse.
To help children and young people cope with exams and combat anxiety, ChildLine is offering the following
advice for young people:

 Make sure you take regular breaks from revising and do some exercise

 Go to bed at a reasonable time and try and get some sleep

 Getting a good night’s sleep will help you much more than trying to revise all night – you will just end up
very tired the next day

 Try to think positively – even if you don’t feel like it, a positive attitude will help you during your revision

 Take some water into the test with you, if you can. Keeping hydrated by drinking water will help you
concentrate.
The ChildLine website has a ‘Beat exam stress’ section for children and young people to visit and a down-
loadable ChildLine booklet with advice. As well as calling ChildLine’s free confidential helpline on 0800 11
11 or visiting childline.org.uk, young people can also send emails to trained counsellors or receive support
online via one-to-one chat. ChildLine is also offering the following advice for parents and carers to help ease
exam stress and anxieties during the revision period:

 Don’t place unnecessary pressure on your children to gain certain grades. They may feel they have
failed if they don’t achieve what they thought was expected of them

 Encourage children to take regular breaks, eat
snacks and exercise

 Help them revise by leaving them the space and
time to do so

 Be relaxed about chores or untidiness and un-
derstand they might be moody. Allow your children
to revise at nights if that’s what works best for
them however do make sure that they get enough
sleep to keep their energy levels up in the day

 Be supportive and help alleviate their worries Also: Lock Block

aimed at encouraging more women to join as police officers.
The event will take place on Friday 20 May 2016 between 9.30am
and 2.15pm at Nelson Street Police Office in Aberdeen.
Speaking about the event Recruitment Inspector Irene Coyle explains: "From our statistics we know that women are underrepresent-
ed when it comes to applications to join Police Scotland, which is disappointing.
"A career with the police is open to everyone. All police officers, regardless of gender or age, have access to the same opportunities
for progression, development and promotion and with flexible working opportunities for both women and men, there has never been
a better time to work within the police service.
"We are holding this recruitment event specifically to address some of the questions and concerns women may have about joining as
a Police Officer.
"There will be a number of different speakers on the day who will cover topics such as 'Fear of the unknown', the recruitment pro-
cess plus there will be demonstrations on officer safety training and even an opportunity to see and try the fitness test.
"There will also be a number of inputs from female officers who will be able to talk about their experience, careers and for some,
how work fits around family.
Over the last year in the North of Scotland just under 25% of applications to join the police were from women and the force is keen
to increase this figure."
Chief Inspector Alison Higgins added: "With the job security, fantastic training and opportunities for progression, a career as a po-
lice officer really is a job like no other.
"We want to encourage more women to apply to become police officers and special constables. It's important to the police service
that our officers represent the communities we serve and the fact that the number of female applicants is not as high as male ones,
has led us to organise this event.
"We hope that this event will help dispel any misconceptions and concerns about working for the police and encourage more women
to apply."
Inspector Irene Coyle concluded: "I would urge any women who have been thinking about joining the police to book a place on the
event. It's free, all it will cost is your time and you've nothing to lose.
"We accept applications from age 17 and a half, although candidates must be 18 before they can start their employment with us and
so anyone currently at school who is thinking of joining is welcome to attend.
"There is no upper age limit for applicants, you do not need specific qualifications and we welcome those with life experience. So
regardless if you are a student coming to the end of your studies, someone who already has work experience and is thinking of a
change in direction or you've been a full time Mum and want to get back into working, I would urge anyone interested in applying to
come to this event."
