The Legend of the Monkey and the Mermaid*

Told through the flowing movements of pangalay dance and the pulsing gongs of a kulintang ensemble, this
magical dance storytelling piece explores how an unlikely friendship reveals principles of symbiosis and
biodiversity, and how ancestral wisdom can inform sustainability for the future.

In 1992, Potri Ranka Manis–an immigrant nurse and veritable Maranao princess–founded Kinding Sindaw to
assert, reclaim, preserve, and re-create the Indigenous living traditions of Mindanao, Southern Philippines:
including, the epics, legends, and oral histories transmitted from generation to generation through chants,
rituals, and dance.

remastered Radiance*
The short piece is combinations of fragments of ideas that were postponed to covid. Pressure creates

diamonds and these are the bits that have been polished as we look forward to our new radiance.

Sheep Meadow Dance Theatre (Long Island City)
Billy Blanken is a choreographer, teacher and dancer whose career ranges from dance theatre, ballet, site-
specific projects and multimedia works. He founded Sheep Meadow Dance Theatre in 2016. @billyblanken.

The Fandango Continuum*
The fandango is a traditional 6-beat music/dance complex developed in Spain by devotees of the Virgin del

Rocio in ancient times (1400's) and brought to the Americas, especially through Mexico. Flamenco Latino's
"Fandangos Continuum" fuses tradition and innovation, and dancers balance solo and group phrases while

playing castanets.

Flamenco Latino(Jackson Heights)
A. REYES is a respected flamenco dancer, choreographer, and teacher in the Flamenco communities of Spain
and New York. She is of Spanish descent, which inspired her inquiry into flamenco. Aurora’s collaboration with
composer Basilio Georges produced Flamenco Latino, a NY-based Flamenco dance company, fusing
Flamenco and Afro-Caribbean traditions.

Closer to the Earth*
This is one solo from a trio. It begins with the body as sculpture, slowly begins moving from its place, out through

and into the entire space. In this video, the mirror reflects the body when the space itself cannot, but the
structure of the dance is WITH the body.

I, Barbara Mahler, began dancing at a late age, when in college. The mysteries of movement and
performance were introduced to me and I graduated from Hunter College. I hold an MFA -2007, and have
taught and performed internationally since the early 80's, sharing a body of work -Klein Technique.

Limpia
Limpia explores the wound of self neglect that has been passed down to all the women in my lineage, this
water dance reclaims the ritual of cleaning as an act of self love and spirituality and attempts to disconnect it

from its traumatizing past.

Fruto Ancestral(Woodside)
Manuela Agudelo has choreographed, directed and produced her own show Legado Dorado, which
included six original dance numbers. She received two grants to produce this work as well as thousands of
dollars in community fundraising. Manuela has also choreographed, directed and produced her own dance
film Mar y Tierra.

Karsilama*
Today Turkish belly dance has been heavily influenced by the Egyptian styles of dance and music. However,
the 9/8 is originally Turkish! Also known as the Karsilama, it is a style of dance that originated with the Turkish
Roma or Gypsies and it is danced in many parts of the Near East with variations and enhancements such as the

use of the big skirts and or tambourine.

Noora Dance Theater(Astoria)
Passionate and accomplished with over 30 years’ experience, Noora has performed nationwide as well as
internationally. She has produced several shows including the acclaimed Divas of the Golden Age shows as
seen in Good Day New York and Supplemented Silence in Fla. Noora teaches in Queens and Manhattan.

Chihuahua: Friendly Competition*
Luz y Sombra is a dance from the region of Chihuahua, Mexico. The dance style is considered a polka which

can also be found with different variations throughout Europe.

Manhatitlan (Long Island CIty)
Manhatitlan has consistently worked with the community of Sunnyside and neighboring parts of Long Island City
for over 6 years bringing Mexican Folklore into its streets. Most recently the organization has been largely
responsible for 'Día de Los Muertos in Queens', that brings programming to Sunnyside, Diversity and Corona
Plaza.

Salute to Our Mothers in the Moonlight
We honor our mothers. We salute our ancestral and spiritual mothers. With every step and rhythm we UPLIFT! our
motherland. Our movements and cultural artifacts are found in Guinea and the SeneGambian regions of West

Africa.

FANIKE! African Dance Troupe (Springfield Gardens)
Pat Ghizamboule Robinson is the Artistic Director of FANIKE! African Dance Troupe, choreographer and arts
leader. Born and raised in Jamaica, Queens, her artistic focus is grounded in the traditional and cultural arts of
Africa. As a former African dancer and drummer, Ghizamboule has over three decades of performance
experience.

Four Kahiko for King David Kalakaua and his Sister Queen Lili`uokalani
Four traditional hula that celebrates King David Kalakaua, the Merrie Monarch, and his sister Queen
Lili'uokalani, who was the last reigning ali'i after being illegally overthrown. Each name chant highlights a
special event - traveling by steam train throughout O'ahu, their chiefly status, birth or even a special place such

as a favorite surf spot.

Na Pua Mai Ka Lani Nuioka(Forest Hills)
Na Pua Mai Ka Lani Nuioka strives to perpetuate the practice of hula, Hawaiian culture, and aloha in NYC.
Unique to the islands of Hawaii, hula is steeped in tradition and is used to tell stories and keep the history of
Hawaii alive.

Shogeki
Humans have both ugly sides and beautiful sides. Both sides are human nature, just like all other animals. This

piece reflects the complicated human nature, which we see everywhere and every day.

The Queensboro Dance Festival (QDF) was launched in 2014 with the mission to strengthen the dance
community in Queens, and garner a greater appreciation for Queens dance. Presenting Queens-based
dance companies of diverse cultures and styles, QDF tours performances & classes every summer throughout
Queens theaters, parks, plazas, libraries, and street events to bring local dance to Queens neighborhoods, and

provides career resources for Queens dancers.
