The Star-Spangled Banner
Words by Francis Scott Key (1779–1843)
Melody by John Stafford Smith (1750-1836)
O say can you see by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

Lift Every Voice and Sing
Words by James Weldon Johnson (1871–1938)
Melody by John Rosamond Johnson (1873–1954)

Lift every voice and sing
‘Til earth and heaven ring,
Ring with the harmonies of Liberty;

Let our rejoicing rise
High as the listening skies,
Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.
Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us
Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us,
Facing the rising sun of our new day begun
Let us march on ‘til victory is won.

Founded in 1970, Medgar Evers College is named in honor of civil rights leader
Medgar Wiley Evers and offers Associate and Baccalaureate degree programs. The
College’s mission is to serve the educational, cultural and social needs of the central
Brooklyn community. Students leave Medgar Evers College with a new understanding
of themselves and a commitment to social justice that reflects the legacy of civil rights
leader Medgar Wiley Evers.

Medgar Evers College is one of 11 senior colleges in the City University of New York (CUNY) system. The
College’s charge is to develop and maintain high quality, professional, career oriented undergraduate degree
programs in the context of liberal arts education. The College offers a rigorous and enriching educational
experience and prepares students to compete in a global society.

SCHOOL OF BUSINESS

The School of Business at Medgar Evers College has been fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Business
Schools & Programs (ACBSP) since 2003. Of the five business schools in the City University of New York, Medgar
Evers College is one of the two that is accredited. The School of Business is an intimate educational environment that
affords close mentoring relationships between faculty, staff and students, in which approximately 70% of its students
are matriculating in career-focused baccalaureate programs.

SCHOOL OF EDUCATION

The School of Education is the home of the College’s pre-college program and two academic departments: The Depart-
ment of Developmental and Special Education and the Department of Multicultural Early Childhood and Elementary
Education, including the Ella Baker/Charles Romaine Early Childhood Center. The pre-college programs include the
Pipeline Initiative. The curriculum and programs in this academic school aims to transform urban education and ad-
dress the challenges urban students face from kindergarten through college.

SCHOOL OF LIBERAL ARTS

The School of Liberal Arts aims to prepare students to achieve their highest academic and career goals through engage-
ment in a learning community endowed with a rich and diverse Liberal Arts curriculum that fosters scholarly excel-
lence, cultural awareness and social responsibility. The School offers Associate and Baccalaureate degree programs that
are responsive to local and global change and produces graduates who are effective world citizens. An inclusive Liberal
Arts education is a necessary foundation for ongoing intellectual development, professional studies and effective ser-
vice to the community.

SCHOOL OF SCIENCE, HEALTH & TECHNOLOGY

The School of Science, Health and Technology is comprised of five academic departments: Biology, Chemistry and
Environmental Science, Mathematics, Nursing and Physics and Computer Science. The School boasts multi-million
dollar core research facilities in the areas of cellular-molecular biology and chemical analysis housed in its 195,000
square foot state-of-the-art building. More than 40 percent of Medgar Evers College students are enrolled in the
School of Science, Health and Technology.

CITY UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK BACCALAUREATE FOR
UNIQUE AND INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDIES

The CUNY Baccalaureate for Unique and Interdisciplinary Studies (CUNY BA) is a small, university-wide degree program
intended for self-directed, academically strong students who have clear and well-formulated academic and career goals. With
guidance from a full-time CUNY faculty mentor, each student is able to design an individualized area of specialization. Although
students in the program are matriculated at one CUNY college, they are free to pursue their studies and take courses at any of the
other colleges in the University.

MEDGAR EVERS COLLEGE SEAL

Medgar Wiley Evers and his dedication to attaining a new birth of freedom, where all humankind
could obtain knowledge, enjoy the protection of justice and live in peace, inspired the Medgar Evers
College seal. The seal consists of unshackled hands, scales of justice, an oil lamp over an open book
and the founding date.

The unshackled hands represent freedom. The scales represent justice. The lamp and the open book
represent knowledge. The seal is formed by the peace symbol to represent the universal cry for peace.

ACADEMIC REGALIA

Commencement exercises at American universities and colleges are traditionally composed of three essential elements:
the Academic Procession, the conferring of degrees and the Commencement address. This practice was codified 1895,
when a national conference on academic-costume and ceremony was proposed and a plan known initially as the
“Intercollegiate System” was formally adopted.

Those with doctoral degrees wear the longest hood. The intermediate length designates a master’s degree and a
shorter length, a bachelor’s degree. Those with an Associate degree wear the shortest hood. Medieval practice
associated certain colors with specific academic pursuits. The silk-lined hoods represent a specific field of study
with an official color trim.

• Apricot Nursing

• Citron Social Work

• Dark Blue Psychology

• Drab (Light Brown) Accounting, Applied Management, Business, Finance & Economics,

Computer Information Systems

• Gold Biology, Computer Science, Environmental Science, Mathematical Science

• Light Blue Education

• Peacock Public Administration

• White English, Liberal Studies

The Doctoral gown has full bell sleeves with velvet trimming on the front of the sleeves. The Master’s gown has oblong
shaped sleeves opened at the wrist. Pointed sleeves, mortar board trim and yoke tabs distinguish the Baccalaureate and
Associate’s gowns.

DESIGNATION OF HONORS

Graduates/candidates whose cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) at the end of the Fall 2017 semester was within the

following criteria will be acknowledged thus:

Cum Laude (3.25-3.49) * Magna Cum Laude (3.50-3.69) ** Summa Cum Laude (3.70-4.00) ***

ACCELERATED STUDY IN ASSOCIATE PROGRAMS

CUNY’s Accelerated Study in Associate Programs (ASAP) assists students in earning associate degrees within three

years by providing a range of financial, academic and personal supports.

6

HEALTHCARE CAREER CONNECTION PIPELINE PROJECT

The Healthcare Careers Connection Pipeline (HCCP) Project, which is funded by a grant from the National Workforce
Development Program in the US Department of Health and Human Services, supports high school students from
minority and underrepresented groups in early college preparation to pursue healthcare careers. Students are able to
earn an Associate’s degree in a STEM career pathway along with their high school diploma.

MEDGAR EVERS COLLEGE BROOKLYN PIPELINE

The Medgar Evers College Brooklyn Pipeline is an intentionally designed system by which students from Central
Brooklyn are guided through a strong Kindergarten through twelfth grade experience, transitioned into college, and
then provided high-quality opportunities to on-board into the profesional world. This comprehensive system supports
schools, not as individual entities, but as interlinked organizations.

SMART SCHOLARS EARLY COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM

The Smart Scholars Early College High School Program is a partnership between Medgar Evers College and Medgar
Evers College Preparatory High School (MECPHS). The dual credit learning program, funded by the NY State
Education Department, allows MECPHS students to participate in college course-work that earns them an Associate’s
degree from the college in coordination with the completion of their high school diploma. The program increases high
school graduation and college completion rates while reducing student tuition costs.

THE MACE

The Mace, carried by the Grand Marshal, is the ceremonial symbol of the College. The origin of the Mace dates back to
the Middle Ages. It is carried at all academic ceremonies. The Grand Marshal, carrying the Mace at Commencement
and Convocation, heralds the arrival of the academic procession.

MEDGAR EVERS COLLEGE PRESIDENT

DR. RUDOLPH F. CREW
Rudy Crew is President of Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn, New York. A lifelong educator
and author, Dr. Crew’s career has spanned from the classroom to the chancellorship of the
nation’s largest school district, New York City Public Schools. Dr. Crew is a renowned leader
and reformer who has made it a mission to improve student achievement, especially for poor
and minority students.
The Chancellor’s District, The Parent Academy, School Improvement Zone and the Pipeline
Initiative are among Dr. Crew’s innovations that are considered national models for reform.
These successful strategies have engaged parents, business and political leaders, and communities, ensuring
students achieve higher levels of success and are prepared for the global challenges ahead.
Dr. Crew has implemented a strategic plan at Medgar Evers College (MEC) to improve retention and increase
graduation rates, resulting in a stronger academic and administrative infrastructure for ensuring student
success and strengthening institutional effectiveness with a two-year high in securing $26 million in external
grants. More than 4,300 students have participated in MEC Pipeline Initiative programs through the 2016-
17 school year. The Pipeline works with a myriad of early college initiatives, the most notable of which is the
Early College Dual Credit/Pipeline Pathways, where high school students in central Brooklyn are offered the
opportunity to take college level courses in their respective high schools, taught by their high school teachers.
MEC faculty collaborates with the teachers to align course content and assessments to ensure students receive
courses comparable to CUNY academic standards. Principals and superintendents are also provided professional
development that is unique to the Pipeline program and implementation. Additionally, parent academy programs
guide parents and guardians through seminars and other experiences to boost their children’s college readiness.
Dr. Crew has served on numerous boards, including the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, Communities in
Schools, Al Shanker Institute, and the Public Education Network. He is the recipient of many awards, including
the NAACP Educational Leadership Award, the Arthur Ashe Leadership Award, and the AASA National
Superintendent of the Year.
Dr. Crew’s acclaimed book, Only Connect: The Way to Save Our Schools, continues to guide a vital public discussion.

2018 KEYNOTE SPEAKER & HONORARY DEGREE OF LAWS

HONORABLE DEVAL PATRICK

Deval Patrick served two terms as the 71st governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, from
2007 to 2015. He is the first and only African-American to be elected to that position.

Originally, from the South Side of Chicago, Patrick came to Massachusetts at age 14 when he earned
a scholarship to Milton Academy through the Boston-based organization A Better Chance. The first
member in his family to attend college, he graduated cum laude from Harvard College in 1978. After
receiving a Rockefeller Scholarship, Patrick spent a year on a United Nations development project
in Sudan before returning to the states to attend Harvard Law School. After graduating, he clerked
for a federal appellate judge, and then worked for the NAACP’s Legal Defense and Education Fund.

In 1994, President Bill Clinton appointed Patrick to the nation’s top civil-rights post, assistant attorney general for
civil rights in the U.S. Department of Justice. During his tenure, Patrick led a sweeping investigation of an outbreak
of arsons at predominately-black churches throughout the South. Until the probe into 9/11, it was the largest criminal
investigation ever mounted by the U.S. government. He has also had a successful career as an attorney and a business
executive, becoming partner at two Boston law firms, and a senior executive at Texaco and Coca-Cola.

In his first bid for public office, Patrick was elected governor of Massachusetts. He won the election by a landslide,
breaking a Republican streak of power that had lasted for 16 years and becoming only the second African American
governor in the United States. In office, he pushed for legislation to limit the purchase of firearms, committed a historic
amount of public funds to Massachusetts schools, protected the state’s first-in-the-nation same-sex marriage rights,
and reformed more of state government than prior administration. At the State House, he oversaw the expansion of
affordable health care to more than 98 percent of the Commonwealth’s residents, launched initiatives stimulating clean
energy and biotechnology, won a national Race to the Top grant, and steered Massachusetts from a recession to a 25-year
high in employment.

What has fueled Patrick’s success as a lawyer, civil rights advocate, and corporate executive and public servant, according
to people from every stage of his life, is his ability to draw on his background to move comfortably among many
different worlds. That skill, which Patrick honed over five decades, has come to define who he is: he is at home among all
sorts of people, of all sorts of backgrounds, tastes and perspectives. Patrick has always wanted to be a “citizen-lawyer”
who only came to public service when he had something to offer.

Patrick currently serves as a Managing Director of Bain Capital Double Impact, where he focuses on investments that
deliver both a competitive financial return and significant positive social impact. He is a Rockefeller Fellow, a Crown
Fellow of the Aspen Institute, and the author of two books, A Reason to Believe: Lessons from an Improbable Life and Faith
in the Dream: A Call to the Nation to Reclaim American Values.

CLASS OF 2018 VALEDICTORIAN

MRS. JESSICA-GRAY CRUMPLEY
CANDIDATE FOR BACHELOR OF ARTS IN PSYCHOLOGY

Mrs. Jessica-Gray Crumpley is graduating with her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a minor in
English Literature. After graduating High School in 2008, Jessica-Gray returned to New York and
started her family. She entered Medgar Evers College in spring 2014 to instill in her daughters the
value of knowledge, self-consciousness, education and truth. In order to bring this vision to fruition,
Jessica-Gray knew she would first have to instill such principles in herself.

Her interest in psychosocial constructs lead her to study psychology as a way to better understanding
humanity. Jessica-Gray is the President of the Medgar Evers College Psychology Club and recipient of
the Health Careers Connection Pipeline Scholarship. She was also the Associate Degree Scholar in 2016. In her spare time,
she enjoys spending time with her husband and children, studying Black history and writing creatively. Jessica-Gray is a
firm believer that knowledge should be sought for eternity. She views her success in academia as more than just obtaining
her degree, and internalizes her academic journey as a change in lifestyle.

After graduation, Jessica-Gray will go on to pursue her doctoral degree. Her goal is to become a Social Psychologist focusing
on self-identity, family and education. She believes by furthering her education she has been granted the opportunity to
grow as an intellectual, a mother, and most significantly, a woman.

CLASS OF 2018 ASSOCIATE DEGREE SCHOLAR

MS. LUAN EMILAIRE
CANDIDATE FOR ASSOCIATE OF SCIENCE IN BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION

Luan Emilaire is graduating with her Associates Degree in Business Administration. She is currently
working towards her Bachelor of Science in Accounting and hopes to earn her degree in 2019. She
was born and raised in Saint Lucia and moved to New York with her mother and siblings in 1995.
Luan never imagined she would earn a college degree. As her life unfolded in New York, she was
inspired to continue her education.

Luan is a member of the Alpha Beta Kappa Honor Society, National Association of Black
Accountants and a volunteer with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Tax Counseling
for the Elderly (TCE) Programs at Medgar Evers College. She has made the President’s List and the Dean’s List two
years in a row. Additionally, Luan works as an Assistant Manager at Upper East Orthopaedics, PC, in Manhattan,
New York.

Luan plans to become a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and then continue on to get her Master’s Degree. She
has worked and attended school full-time and believes her time at Medgar Evers College has shown her that she is a
dedicated, hard worker, who stops at nothing to achieve her goals. Luan states that in order to become successful one
must be dedicated and determined. She believes everything she has encountered has taught her the value of being
efficient and finding the positive when overcoming obstacles on the way to achieving your goal. She wants her son to
use her example and know that he, too, can achieve his goals.

2017-2018 STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT

MRS. ASHA EDWARDS-NEWTON

Student Government Association President Asha Edwards-Newton is a native of Trinidad & Tobago,
but has called Brooklyn home since 1996. That is when she moved to New York to build a better life
for herself.

Prior to becoming a student at Medgar Evers College, Asha volunteered at several Student
Government Association celebrations, including Ramadan, Diwali Thanksgiving, Kwanzaa and
Christmas. When she became a student, she made it her mission to change the way students,
administrators and faculty communicated around campus. She hoped to bridge gaps and
advocate for students, showing them what a large influence they had on their campus. Since starting at Medgar
Evers College in the spring 2015, Asha has served as Freshmen Class President and President of the Caribbean
Village Club. In 2016, Asha was elected President of the Student Government Association. She was elected to a
second term as president in 2017.

A curiosity about illnesses, and a desire to help ease an individual’s discomfort and pain, led Asha to study nursing.
She intends to use her degree and her education from Medgar Evers College to become an advocate for others in need.
When she is not studying, Asha enjoys travelling to her native Trinidad, Florida and other exciting new places with her
family. In addition, she enjoys volunteering in shelters. After she graduates, Asha hopes to work in the medical field as a
Registered Nurse and plans to keep furthering her education in the medical world. Ultimately, she would like to retire,
return to the islands and open her own medical facility in Trinidad.

2017-2018 STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION TREASURER

MR. QUINCY GABRIELE

Quincy Gabriele was born in New York City to a family of Trinidadian descent. Though a Brooklyn
native, he spent his formative years in Trinidad. Influenced by his mother’s work with Dr. Betty
Shabazz and lessons learned in Trinidad, a passion for entrepreneurship led him to Wall Street
where he began his career. Working in the financial district was professionally fulfilling; however, it
was void of a necessary social responsibility.

Gabriel attended Medgar Evers College based on a recommendation from a relative, who was a
former alumnus; and was immediately engaged in an environment much like his childhood, where
so many different cultures and walks of life coexisted successfully. Inspired by his peers, he decided to pursue a Ph.D.
Quincy has made the Dean’s List; served as President and Founder of the Finance Club (2016-2017); and voted Senior
Class President (2016-2017); and Treasurer (2017-2018) of the Student Government Association. Upon his graduation,
Quincy plans to seek his MBA and focus on working in underserved communities to ensure access to higher education
and capital.

11

2017-2018 STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION
SENIOR CLASS PRESIDENT

MS. LATCHMIE NISA MARAJH
CANDIDATE FOR BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN BIOLOGY
The quest for education and service has always guided Ms. Latchmie Nisa Marajh. It is what led her
to Medgar Evers College, her academic major and shaped her career goals.
Latchmie was born and raised in Trinidad. Through a modest and often challenging upbringing,
Latchmie quickly recognized how education emboldened her sense of freedom and perspective.
After years of applying herself to her studies, she was able to apply for scholarships, which would
enable her to attend college. Her chosen path led to Medgar Evers College
In addition to serving as Senior Class President, Latchmie has served as President of the National Society of Leadership
and Success (NSLS), Vice Chair of the International Affairs for the University Student Senate (USS), Vice President
of the Caribbean Village Club, member of the Dental Club, International Student Club and the Muslim Student
Association. She is also the recipient of numerous community service awards, among them the Presidential Seal Award
for community service from NSLS and the Outstanding Leadership Award from the Student Government Association.
In 2017, she received a citation and recognition from New York State Senator Roxanne J. Persaud for outstanding
commitment and for providing quality service to communities in Brooklyn and the state of New York.
Throughout her involvement in various student groups and affiliations, Latchmie has maintained a high grade point
average, earning a position on the Dean’s List in spring 2015, fall 2015, spring 2016, spring 2017 and fall 2017. She was
also the recipient of the Albert Vann Legacy Scholarship award in fall 2017.
Latchmie is a candidate for a Bachelor in Science degree in Biology. She plans to continue on to dental school and
become a maxillofacial surgeon. She recalls how difficult it was for the children in her community to access health and
dental care. Her intent is to one day bring change to these challenges. Today, Latchmie becomes the first person from
her community to not only attend, but also graduate from, college.
