GIVING BACK u
LIVING OUR CAUSE
Building a Stronger Community
Suncoast Campaign for Grade-Level Summer Reading
and Camp DASH
Studies show that summer learning programs set children up for success in
school and life, but many programs are expensive and unavailable to low
income, minority students. To combat summer learning loss, the Manatee YMCA
offered a summer reading program at each of its three branch locations and the
new Camp DASH, a free summer camp for children at Harllee Middle School.
Working with the Suncoast Summer Reading program and grants from the Paterson
Foundation and the Manatee Community Foundation, the Y was able to help close the summer
learning gap through programs focused on sports, reading, STEM, character development,
and community service. The Tampa Bay Lightning also donated 40 hockey sticks, two goals,
a case of balls, four complete sets of goalie gear, and 40 reversible pinnies to Camp DASH.
Thank you to our community partners for making this possible!
SOAR - Special Organized Adult Recreation
The Manatee YMCA offers year-round social and recreational programs for adults with
a variety of special needs and ability levels. Participants explore a packed calendar of
events including field trips, exercise, crafts, socialization, games, swimming, and more!
They also learn skills that contribute to successful employment, explore social and
volunteer opportunities, and experience a sense of community. The program is offered
at the Parrish YMCA. For more information about SOAR, contact Jamie Rusnak at
[email protected] or (941) 798-9622 x203.
EVENTSMiddle School Leadership/Success Camps
In partnership with Harvest Methodist Church, Lakewood Ranch YMCA Campers
learned how to navigate common challenges, ask questions, and get advice to
be successful. 5-week camp week topics included “What’s Important to me?”
“Team Work,” “My Success Plan,” “Leadership and Character Devlopment,” and
“Leadership and Goal Setting.” For more
information, visit the Welcome Desk or
manateeymca.org/programs/camp.
Manatee YMCA Thrift Shop
The Y Thrift Shop is located in Palmetto, behind the
McDonalds and across from Walmart on 10th St E. All
proceeds from the store are used to support those in
need through programs such as mentoring and leadership,
summer/day camp, safe places before and after school,
services for veterans, and other health and wellness
services for Moms and families. Items can be donated at
any Manatee YMCA branch and include clothing, furniture,
toys, kitchenware, sporting equipment, books, electronics,
tools, art, and more! Pick-up and delivery services are available for large items by calling (941) 212-4652. Receive a 10%
discount at the Thrift Shop if you belong to the Y!
