Form 3 Journey Letter #1

Dear Form 3 Parents,

I trust you have experienced a positive start to 2018 and that your sons have also been able
to enjoy the start without the usual nervous anticipation of The Journey this early on in the year.
My hope is that the Form 3’s utilize this period to focus on their academics and the other
aspects of College life. I hope to see them develop a strong work ethic and a positive
momentum that will carry them through the year. The Journey is set to start on the 30th of
August with Group 1 leaving the College gates, and will come to a close with Group 6 returning
on the 26th of September.

It is the school’s intention that every Form 3 boy should participate in this life-experience as we
are sure that it will go a long way towards establishing the kind of positive values, perspective
and self-awareness that your son will adopt and build on during his early adult life. We view it
as an essential part of our curriculum.

There are many possible benefits that the Journey could have for your son, including: improved
confidence and a deeper understanding of his own strengths and weaknesses; a sincere
appreciation for family and daily comforts; an awareness of issues that are greater than
himself; satisfaction from stretching himself, be it physically or otherwise; more openness when
dealing with and helping others; developing skills to hold his peers accountable and
confronting and challenging behaviours in a constructive manner; a respect and admiration
for nature; coping skills, problem-solving skills, team skills and leadership skills; a greater sense
of independence and competence. It is a journey of self-discovery.

We are developing a resource list of videos, podcasts, articles and books which we would
encourage you to use. These will prepare you as a parent for the role that you play in
maximising the experience and learning of your son as he goes on Journey. This list will be
made available shortly.

The cost of Journey 2018 is R7400.00. This amount will be charged to your school account and
should be paid in full before the 31st of July 2018. Should you have any queries or require
alternative payment arrangements, please contact the finance department directly.

Thank you for your continued support and trust in your son’s education here at St Alban’s
College.

Yours sincerely
