All Points Camping Club News

Wow! It’s been three years. In November 2015 the idea of a National camping club that supported all campers
started to become a reality. On New Years Eve, the 31st December, we will definitely be celebrating our 3rd birthday.
Thank you to all the members and committee past and present, in particular those who have contributed ideas and
provided support and encouragement. It has been a challenging but rewarding time building the club, with a few
interesting moments. It is fantastic that we have a very supportive committee who are passionate about camping
and happy to take the lead when required.
At the time of this magazine going out we have just finished the Steampunk camp at Thames which was a huge
success and few of us are preparing for events this weekend promoting the club. Beverley and I are heading to
Nelson to man a stand for the Rotary Motorhome Show and our Vice President Wayne with his wife Jo will be raising
the flag at a fishing competition at Ngawi.
All Points Camping Club (North, South, East and West) was always intended to support all NZ campers including
budget travellers and active / sports campers and it is great to see the different groups coming on board. It has been
great to see our club members out and about promoting the organisation, both with hosting events and
participating with other groups. The friendships, memories and stories we have from these gatherings are seldom
forgotten.
As we travel around New Zealand we find it interesting the number of campers, and campground owners who have
never heard of our club. We do our bit to introduce it, but never push it. Our club profile is getting much better
known throughout NZ and what is fantastic is that we regularly receive comments complementing us on our
friendly, inclusive and not controlling attitude. I believe that it is important that we maintain our club focus of being
supportive and inclusive of all campers, including those with young families and those in tents, small vans, trailer

campers etc. Starting with or getting back to basics (with a lower carbon footprint) and applying ‘can do’ kiwi
ingenuity in camping is something we should be proud of.

Much of the growth in our club has come through social media, plus our support of a fair self-containment scheme.
When the club took this on mid 2017 we never expected it to get as big as it have with 3500 certificates since
issued. The workload is such that the self containment scheme, through NZ Lifestyle Camping Ltd, and club
memberships (approx 1300) now engages two staff on a part time basis.

Membership Benefits

Our support package for club members includes a growing range of partnership discounts. Special
acknowledgement goes to our major supporting partners being Kiwi Holiday Parks and Accommodation and Star
Camper Care Insurance. In this issue of NZ Lifestyle Camping Magazine you will notice that the list of supporting /
discount businesses has grown considerably. Please take advantage of and enjoy the savings that we are bringing to
our members. You will need one of the new membership cards and these will be issued with new and renewed
memberships or can be ordered from [email protected] .

New Supporting Partners

- APCNZ has now partnered with the CSC Buying Groups to bring our members a range of discounts from a
great selection of retailers. We have made initial approaches to camping retail chains with a preference to
working alongside and supporting NZ owned and operated suppliers.

- My Car Your Rental provides an opportunity for New Zealanders to earn revenue from that vehicle (car or
campervan) sitting idle in the driveway and for other Kiwi’s to enjoy an affordable holiday. All the hardwork
is done for you and Henrik at www.mycaryourrental.com has worked hard to develop a hassle free rental
scheme. The income opportunity makes this worth considering with an APCNZ special thrown in.

Regional Growth and Club Networks

With more than 1000 members spread throughout NZ, the club is slowly moving towards regional support networks.
These have not been formalised, however the constitution allows for regional groups to be represented on the club
committee. In building a national club, we can only go so far with organising events from Base Camp (centred in
Feilding, Manawatu). It is important that our members are supported in from within their regions.

Often, getting things happening regionally takes considerable time and perseverance. Initial numbers at a first
camping event may be very small but over time as more events get added and more people hear about it the
numbers grow.

We are currently building regional support bases in Auckland, Waikato, Wellington, Tasman, Lower North Island and
Canterbury, with several events having been held or coming up.

Club Promotion

A promotional vehicle has been purchased by NZ
Lifestyle Camping Ltd (funded from self containment
revenue) which is available for club promotion at no
cost. Logos and Decals are slowly being added and
they definitely generate some interesting questions.
Unexpectedly we have been asked several times if our
van is a rental so the interest in rentals is definitely
out there.

One of the biggest expenses the club has in
developing its base throughout NZ is the ongoing cost
of promotional material. This includes purchasing
flyers, flags and banners, website and facebook

hosting costs, plus signage for events etc. We try to do this as efficiently as possible and are slowly providing
resources to our regional representatives around the country.
If you receive some extra flyers with your membership (or membership renewal) pack why not hand one out to
someone else. The club logo is available in several sizes and signage for large vehicles, camps and businesses is an
option. (If you are planning on hosting a camping related event we provide public liability cover and may be able to
secure some sponsorship.)

Membership Subscriptions
Thank you for renewing you club membership. Your annual membership subscription helps to ensure the financial
stability of our club and enables us to manage the organisation better. At less than $1.50 per week, the $30.00
membership fee covers the Kiwi Holiday Parks discount card, labels, printing, courier and processing fees. The small
balance remaining is used for the purchase of resources, website cost and general club operating expenses.
We are currently looking at upgrading our membership software and have been quoted several thousand dollars to
do this per year. So please, ensure you pay your subscription renewal. If you have not yet received a renewal invoice
please contact Lyn Bennett [email protected]

Next Steps

Over the next few months we will be rebuilding and developing the club’s websites, membership pages and working
to improve our member support. If you have ideas and practical suggestions on how we could better improve our
member support please contact me on [email protected] .

Woodville Labour Weekend
Housebus / Truck Vintage Gathering.

Recently Jo and I attended the above gathering along with about a dozen other APCNZ Club members including Lyn
& Ross Bennett from Hamilton. With about 40 vehicles attending over the weekend it was amazing to see the vast
difference in how people set their buses and trucks up whether it’s used for vacations or lived in full time on the
road.
Our Mitsubishi Fuso bus was one of the younger buses there. Those attending included a 1953 AEC Reliance, a few
SB3 Bedford’s. A couple of the Bedford school buses among many other interesting buses and house trucks. Overall
a great weekend and a huge thank you goes to the organizers for making this possible. We hope this becomes a
regular event.
Ross and I, apart from meeting a lot of new people and promoting APCNZ, managed to find time to do a Self-
Containment check on a current members bus. I would recommend that if this gathering is held again that as many
people with an interest on the older motor homes make the effort to attend.

Don't push ya luck

By Alan Knight

This was Written under force and threats. My South Island Journey so far.

Started early October, across the strait on a lovely
calm crossing.

Picton.... Went up to Whatamango doc
camp. Beautiful calm peaceful camp right on the
water in an inlet from the ferry channel.
There was something in the mud bushes that night,
out I went with my torch but wasn't brave enough
to go in the bushes lol.

Next day shot down to Wairau Division
reserve. The white baiters were lined along the
river camping but stacks of room still to
camp. They say they get about 1 kg a day in their
nets.
The following night moved up more closer to the
beach, and once again nice and peaceful.

Stayed at Taylor Dam reserve just south of Blenheim. Nothing special but had first encounter with grubby
tourists who just shrugged their shoulders at the mess and drove off.

Headed off south again. About 20 mins south
of Blenheim the winds came along and I tell
you, I reckon I had the camper up on 2 wheels
just before a bridge. (If it wasn't for my
skill). Anyway, I decided ‘this is dodgy and I
need to get off the road’. Aimed for Ward
beach and off I went. Oops. Right on the East
Coast beach and the wind is strong. Tried to
hide the camper behind some bushes but was
still getting beat up bad. Anyway, the farmer
come down and told us to follow him to his
farm. Put us in a nice secluded spot protected
from the wind and very strong gusts. In the
morning he was shearing so in we went and
earn our keep by working the shearing shed for
the morning.

Left and dawdled down to Kaikoura. A few stops along the coast with all the slip repairs but I didn’t
care. The work those guys have done makes the Manawatu gorge look like kiddies in a kindergarten
sandpit. Amazing work done there.
Went to a camp on the shore for the night, then drove out to the point n went an interacted with the
seals. Had to detour on the boardwalk as 1 seal had taken his afternoon nap on it. And he hissed at the
little Asian man who thought he cud encroach his spot. Never seen anyone jump off a boardwalk so quick
lol.

Next day got off the beaten track heading to Nape, Nape Rd. 27 mins of gravel Rd but no corrugation so
was just plain dusty. And at the end just a quiet dead-end spot right on the beach. No internet or cell
coverage but tv still worked so I was ok. 1 night was all that was spent there.

And on to the stress. Christchurch. I hate that place. I got so lost.

Even the GPS had me driving over grass all the
time. But I was there for the off-road racing at the
weekend so had to stick around. In my travels I came
across Yaldhurst car museum. Apparently it's privately
owned now by a man who bought it for a tax write
off. But if you like the rustic look museums this is a
definite must to see. I used my charm on one of the
employees there and I managed to go thru the staff
only gate and get to see all the amazing stuff the
public don't get to see.

I spent 3 nights camping right on the front straight of
the offloading nationals track. Glad I had my
awning. Gee it was hot. Had lots of Jafa friends down
for it as well so my awning Was The corporate box.

Popped down to Ashburton. Stayed 2 nights at a pop. Vintage car guy so right up my alley with all the old
cars and rustic relics as my neighbours.

Anyway. . . So far I have learnt to remember
fly spray and sitri . . citrin. . . .citrine. . .
.smelly candle stuff to keep the bugs
away. Had neither one-night and my ceiling
was black from me swatting the pesky beep
beep mossies’.
Dunno where I am at the moment but who
cares eh. . . I know there's a river beside me
lol.

Whakatane
Snapper $1000

At the end of September, a number of APCNZ and The Foxton Surfcasting Club travelled to Whakatane to attend the
annual Invitational Snapper $1000 surfcasting competition for the 7th time. The event is hosted by the Whakatane
Surfcasting Club and held at the Thornton Motor Camp, a great venue right on the beach front with excellent
amenities, friendly staff and dogs allowed. If you are in the Bay check this camp out, heaps of room for campers,
tents, vans and buses with cabins and chalets available.
This event is organized by Robin & Ray Burton along with a handful of club members helping out. This year All Points
camping provided Two prize packs including family membership to APCNZ. The prize packs were awarded to the
best and worst camp sites along the beach for the overnight competition. A huge thanks must go to Ray Burton for
along with his duties running the comp he found time to check on the camp sites and take some photos.
After the fishing but before the prizegiving Ray and myself went over the photos and chose the Two winners. A
family from the Bay of Plenty took out the best camp with a trailer camper and Team Feilding with a tarp and
driftwood got the effective but worst campsite. As a fanatical fisherman and camper, we will be back again next
year.

This includes but isn’t limited to; Alternators, Starters, Fuel pumps, iDRIVE throttle enhancers, Automotive Sensors
(Oxygen, Crank, Cam etc), Hard parts, Distributors, coils, Off-road recovery Gear (HULK brand), Diagnostic assistance
(Vehicle scanning)

Recommended by our members for increased power under load is iDRIVE. www.idrivenz.co.nz
iDRIVE is a throttle enhancement device that connects in minutes yet gives endless enjoyment.

Your late model car, Ute or camper uses a fly-by –wire
accelerator pedal system that is designed to take into
consideration all manner of inputs before the computer
responds by opening the throttle. This causes
unexpected delays, and is annoying, if not at times,
dangerous.

The ECU must consider Torque management, Engine
pinging, atmospheric conditions, and many more
parameters. Built ‘for the masses” they don’t take into
consideration YOU the driver. That’s right, you have now
been relegated to just one of many inputs. Take back the control with an iDRIVE.

Give yourself the adjustability to choose the driving characteristics of your RV, Car or truck now!

Cure the associated delay with an iDRIVE unit. You’ll be glad you did. The iDRIVE remains completely
adjustable, and rather than negating the need for a tune, the iDRIVE actually enhances it. We’re so
confident that you’ll love the response the iDRIVE gives to your vehicle, we offer a 30-day money back
guarantee!

Parakai Springs Labour Weekend

This was my day to welcome the members of APC to a Get together at Parakai Springs and Pools

From the photo you will note we set up our advertising
welcome Banner and awaited callers. It was still early in
the morning when we arrived (we also had a grandchild
with us) and so we watched who was coming and guessing
if they were members or not.

We were a little disappointed by the lack of response but
this I put down to our antiquated laws about emails
notification of up and coming events. If one joins an
organisation one would expect to be notified of what’s
going on without having to be on Facebook.

So getting back to Parakai I started to chat to people in
cars and caravans and give out a hand out to which I was
getting a very great response. It will be interesting how
many new members we get from the Auckland area and there were also Waikato visitors who also showed an
interest. Caravans/Motorhomes were outnumbered by tents and I enjoyed watching how the children of the
families joined in playing together. It was also nice to hear that some families wanted to show what camping was
like without electronic distractions and believe me it was so great to see the interaction from those all because of
the children playing together.

I don’t know which generation, Baby Boomers or the previous generations, but it seems people are now coming to
terms with Freedom Camping (albeit in a camping ground) but are also looking for new ways to Freedom camp. We
need to take heart that Rome was not built in a day.

Onwards to our next Auckland event..............................Colin Forster

Editors Note: One of the things we have found with getting club events off the ground in a new area is that many
people are interested but cautious to be ‘new people’ in a ‘new group’. Many people take a wait and see approach
before getting involved. The experience at the Parakai camp is something we have also encountered with our first
events in Manawatu and Canterbury but as more enthusiastic campers come on board we are starting to see good
social turnouts. Facebook remains our most effective medium for advising of events and club happenings.

Getting information out to all our club members is a challenge and we are restricted under the privacy act and
international regulations to only send out information to persons who have subscribed. For this reason we now ask
all new members if the wish to receive notifications of events and are developing our member only pages. Through
the website member only pages, members can see contact details for other members who would like to be more
actively involved and contacted in respect of events and promotions. We are looking forward to getting member
contact networks set up in the various regions around NZ and improved membership software.

We will be listing these events on our website over the next week.

Dates: Friday the 28th of December to Thursday the 3rd of January. Our wonderful hosts, Jo Foster

wormed no more than 30 days prior.
For more information please go to https://www.sheepmeasles.co.nz/on-the-farm/dog-treatmentsdosing/

welcome.

Camping Spots in Canterbury - Where to start????

Hi Folks. Balmoral Reserve, near Culverton, is a good sheltered camping location. Great for a group. We have stayed
there a couple of times. Its run by a "Committee" for the local Council. Great facilities. $5.00 per vehicle per night.

We visited Tekapo recently camping in the town is available, but we went in towards the Military Camp and found a
spot on a side road. It was good for overnight and our first trip in ‘Kaniere Belle’( poptop camper ). Lake Benmore is
great, especially if you're fishing.

We go out to the Waimakariri River regularly with our
dog, Lady, for her to have a swim. On the North bank
there are some very good spots and there are no
problems with camping there.

We head to the West Coast regularly and there are
some lovely spots to camp, a lot of them DOC sites. We
like Mount White, on the way over (or back). It is a nice
area with nice scenery and mozzies! lol

We have visited a lot of places and will add more to the
Facebook site as summer progresses.

Cheers Wayne and Lindy

Self Containment Issuing Authority

The All Points Camping Club has partnered with NZ Lifestyle Camping Ltd
(NZLC) to help develop a fair and sustainable camping industry in NZ.

NZ Lifestyle Camping Ltd manages certified self-containment throughout NZ
and oversees a network of competent testing officers. These include
professional businesses and individuals who believe in fair application of the self containment standard
NZS 5465:2001. All testing officers are required to correctly and fairly apply the standard.

- Any person or business may approach our testing officers for self containment. You do not need to
be a member of any organisation.

- NZ Lifestyle Camping Ltd believes in and encourages sustainable and responsible camping.
- We believe that every person camping in NZ has a responsibility for our environment and that

certified self containment of campervans and motor caravans is a step towards achieving
sustainable camping.
- We believe that all NZ campers with vehicles that meet the self-containment requirements should
be able to get their vehicle certified. Campers, our friendly and conscientious testing officers will
help you to get your vehicle certified for self-containment.

Have a converted van / campervan? If your vehicle meets the requirements we will certify it.

Pop Top Camper, Slide on or rooftop camper? Each vehicle and conversion is considered individually.

There is no vehicle exclusion list for certified self contained vehicles.

- But the vehicle interior must be designed and fit for habitation, and you must have sufficient room
to adequately use the toilet inside the vehicle when required or we will not approve it.

You don’t want to join an organisation just to get self-containment?

- You do not have to join an organisation to get self-containment but joining does have benefits.

How much does it cost?

- NZ Lifestyle Camping charges $30.00 processing fee. The testing officer may / will charge you for
their service and any materials they need to make your vehicle comply.

- Or join APCNZ with a combined fee for self-containment and membership benefits of $45.00.

Where can I get this done and how long will it take?

- Our network of qualified testing officers is continually growing. The
Self Containment Check may take around 30 minutes or more
depending on what is required. Once the completed checklist is
received by NZLC it usually takes 4 to 5 working days for the final
processing and delivery. This can take longer subject to information
requirements, holidays and delivery delays.

If you are interested in becoming a self containment testing officer please register on the APCNZ website
contact via [email protected] .

How to Get Good Sleep During a Camping Trip

This excerpt from Brian Bradshaw’s article is timely, with the summer camping season upon us.
You can find the rest of Brian’s article and other informative camping articles on his Boot Bomb website at
https://bootbomb.com/camping.

Before Bed Preparations

Before you get to bed to sleep while camping, there are a number of things you need to do so that you
can have a good sleep.

1. Don’t Overdress & Dry Clothing

Clothes that are not dry (or are at least partially
damp) should be avoided. Ensure you have warm
clean dry clothes to wear before you get into your
sleeping bag. Overdressing will bring restlessness
in your sleep and this will probably hamper the
effectiveness of your sleeping bag.

2. Consume Food/Drink

You should note that sleeping bags don’t generate
heat, but our bodies do. When the body is
undergoing digestion, it generates heat. The water
will keep you hydrated, which will help your
blood to circulate better. This can prevent uncomfortable situations like high-altitude headaches.

3. Remove Tent Clutter

Food and other things like scented toiletries should be kept away from the tent and it should be
secure. The tent and its surroundings should be neat and free from food and scented things. If there
has been spillage of food, ensure you clean it up right away. Food odor’s and scented things like
toothpaste can attract dangerous animals and insects, so they should be avoided.

4. Maintain A Routine

Don’t get over what you used to do before you sleep because this will help you feel like home in the
new environment. If you used to do press ups before jumping to bed, then do it here as well.

5. Cover Your Head

Covering your head and face will help keep the heat generating from your body, from leaving your
body. Ensure proper covering of your face and head.
