RUTH BADER GINSBURG

Born in March 1933, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, was
one of the few women in 1956 offered
admission to Harvard Law School. Together
with 500 men and only 9 women, she took
classes in law. As you can imagine, this was a
hard time for Ruth and the other girls. Back
then it was unthinkable for women to study
law. In the acceptance letter that was given to
the women, the statement made by the Dean
of Harvard Law School, demonstrated the
popular point of view of that time.

“Why are you at Harvard

Law School, taking the

place of a man?”

At the beginning of her professional career,

Ruth had difficulties finding employment
mostly because of her sex. In 1972, Ruth co-
founded the Women’s Rights Project at the
American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). She
participated in over 300 gender discrimination
cases by 1974. Her strategy was to not ask the
court to end all gender discrimination at once,
but taking aim at specific discriminatory
statutes and building on each successive
victory.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg played a very important
role in eliminating gender-based
discrimination in US law. With her
determination and ambition, she managed

Groundbreaker
women

BY TOLUNA TEAM SPAIN

Throughout history, many women
have struggled to make a place for
themselves in a world that seemed to

be dominated by men.

The lives of these five women, and
many others, have marked a before
and after on the road to equality.

C h r i s t i n e d e P i z a n
Born in the 15th century in Venice, this
philosopher, writer, and humanist poet is

considered the forerunner of Western feminism
and the first woman to earn a living by writing
professionally.

The sudden death of her father and husband
forced her to take care of her family, so she
decided to start writing. Her best-known work is
The City of Ladies (1405), a plea for women for
whom she claims a place in the world, as well as a

clear criticism of the misogyny that prevailed in
medieval times.

At the age of 26, Russian astronaut Valentina
Tereshkova became the first woman to fly into
outer space aboard the Vostok 6 spacecraft.

After 70 hours of flight and 48 laps around the
Earth, Tereshkova landed near a Kazakh village
with symptoms of dizziness, but with the

satisfaction of having accomplished a mission for
Russia and for feminism.

Business Women who
broke the glass ceiling

BY TOLUNA TEAM BELGIUM

All over the world, women are fighting for

equality, especially in the workplace.
Although there is still plenty of progress to
be made, we are shedding light on two bold
and brilliant ladies who took hammers to

the glass ceiling that tried to keep them
down in the worlds of business and finance.
This invisible but impermeable barrier that

limits the career advancement of women is
still out there. Let these women serve as
inspiration for all women who are still
Kathryn Kolbert fighting their way to the top.

Kathryn Kolbert is a woman of many talents. As a
renowned civil-rights lawyer who has long fought for
women’s and reproductive rights, she has been
recognised by the American Lawyer as one of 45 public-
interest lawyers "whose vision and commitment are
changing lives.” In 2009, Kolbert became the Founding
Director of the Athena Center for Leadership Studies at
Barnard College, NY, a center dedicated to the
advancement of women's leadership around the world.
Before, she served as the president of People for the
American Way, a progressive organisation dedicated to
equality under the law. Furthermore, she is the Co-
Founder of the Athena Film Festival, a festival to
highlight work by women filmmakers and stories about
women.

“in terms of leadership, you only can change the world
if women get beyond their gender and can contribute
equally within any kind of organisation or entity. And as
long as they’re a minority in whatever role they’re
playing, their gender is the only issue people are
looking at them for, rather than the huge contributions
they bring to the table. The fact that we still count
arrivals and departures of female executives is
testament to how much remains to be done.“

STACEY CUNNINGHAM
Beginning her career as an intern on the New
York stock exchange 26 years ago, Stacey
Cunningham became in 2018 the first-ever woman
to head the 228-year-old financial market. That it
is a woman who oversees 2.800 companies that
trade on the New York Stock Exchange, raises
hopes that the glass ceiling may show finally
cracks on Wall Street.

When she first arrived, Cunningham recalled, the

women’s bathroom on the seventh floor was
inside an old phone booth. Men, she said, had a
“palatial” bathroom next door with couches and a
full-time attendant. Cunningham sees her role in
promoting diversity in the financial services sector
that is struggling to show it has moved beyond
the clichés of Wall Street’s sexist culture.

Cunningham says that the statue of the Fearless

Girl who looks the Wall Street Bull straight in the
eyes stands as a powerful beacon, showing
women—young and old—that no dream is too big
and no ceiling is too high. “I think it’s just really
important to recognize that any time a woman
pushes the boundaries and redefines the
boundaries, she’s redefining them for everyone
else that follows her”.
