Wishing you a very Merry Christmas This Christmas issue our theme is “Green Christmas”, and we were asked
and a safe, healthy and propersous New Year! what our favourite upcycle, or second-hand gift was. I have a few that
immediately come to mind, but my most favourite was a gift from my
Mayor, Council and Staff sister and brother in law. We moved a couple years ago, and I had an old
for the Town of Espanola brown, wooden potato/onion bin that had seen better days. The wood
in the back was broken, the chicken wire in
the front had detached and stabbed you
every time you tried to get an onion out of
the bottom. I had it for manyyears and it was
dated and tired. I decided it was not moving
with us and putitinto the garbage pile.

Fast forward almost a year later to my Birthday.
I arrive at my sister’s house to visit and she has
this large present wrapped up for me. I open it to
find my old potato bin; the back replaced with
galvanized steel and new chicken wire attached
in the front by my brother in law. The bin
painted a shabby chic white by my sister. I was delighted! They told me I could
put it outside to hold garden tools.“No way, it’s too nice for that!”, I exclaimed. It
now sits in my new sunroom and holds art supplies, games and puzzles and I
love it every time I look at it. It’s not only pretty and fits right in, it was lovingly
made into something new by my sister and brother in law; it has meaning,
and that is something you can’t buy in a store.

This Christmas make it a goal to make, upcycle or regift at least one gift. It
notonlyhelps ourplanet;itcould be the mostmeaningful giftthatyou give.
Merry Christmas everyone! Enjoy the holidays with everyone that you love
and take a minute to appreciate how beautiful this world is that we live in.

Green Christmas “my
second hand, third hand
and fourth hand re-gift”

My parents had an oak kitchen table with a matching
hutch thattheyboughtsecond hand from myauntand uncle.
A couple of years later my mom’s sister passed away which

made the set extra special. When my parents passed away
ten years ago I was the lucky recipient of the set. We used it for many
years then re-gifted the set to my brother. He no longer needed the set,
tried to sell it but had no luck so in the end he re-gifted it back to me. I
couldn’t stand the idea of it going to the landfill site!

As years went by my brother and I
would often say “this table has sat
many, many, people who have left us
over the years. Our grandparents, all
of our aunts and uncles, cousins and
friends. Many euchre and cribbage
games were played out and I recall a
wee bit of cheating going on…. My
Memere Lamothe was the best at it!

We now use the table in my husband’s
mancave where it continues to
welcome many new faces. I didn’t
know what to do with the hutch so I painted the bottom cabinet to
match the theme of our house. I can’t believe all the compliments I
have gotten on it. It is by far my most prized possession as it holds so
many memories of all of the people who visited our home from years
ago and will continue to do so for many years to come!

“Peace on earth will come to stay, when we live
Christmas every day.”“Just remember, the true

HafrpompyevHeryoonleidaat ys Low Waste Gift Wrap Ideas

All it takes is a quick look around the room on Christmas morning to
see just how much waste we create with wrapping paper, gift bags,
ribbons, and bows! Sadly, a lot of these materials can’t be recycled and
they end up in the landfill. It seems pretty wasteful for just one day!

Here are some low-waste wrapping ideas foryour Christmas gifts this year:

- Wrap your gifts in fabric! You can buy pieces of fabric, or use pieces
you already have at home. Scarves, tablecloths, old curtains, and
cloth napkins are perfect for this. There are even some tutorials
online for funky ways to tie your fabric into bags and bows.

57 Queensway, Espanola, P5E 1H9 705-869-1826 - Kraft paper: totally recyclable, compostable, inexpensive, and it
looks cute too!

- Newspapers and magazine pages: What a perfect way to use
something you already have around the house. Get creative with it
and use sections that remind you of the person receiving the gift.

- An old map: This makes for a really cool gift. Especially for your
loved ones who like to travel. Old maps can be found at thrift stores
or in old text books.

- Cardboard boxes: plain old cardboard boxes can actually look quite
nice. Simply add some painted patterns or stamps to it, and voila!

- Similar to cardboard boxes, try dressing up brown paper bags.

5. Stainless steel straws and a
bristle brush cleaner are small gifts
that can make a big difference! Plastic
straws cannot be recycled and are
one of the most common pieces of
litter found on beaches. Stainless steel
straws can be used again and again
and can help encourage your loved
ones to be more mindful about the
waste they create.

6. Homemade or locally bought
preserves, mmm. Fill a basket with
a few jars of things like jams, chutneys,
pickles, salsa, you name it! Top it off
with theiraccompanying snack like fresh baked bread ortortilla chips
and you’ve got a wonderful little gift with a small footprint.
