On 9 December 2017, the world marks the International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of the Crime of Genocide and of the Prevention of this Crime, established through Resolution A/RES/69/323 that was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in September 2015. The 9th of December was chosen as it is the anniversary of the adoption of the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (the “Genocide Convention”). Marking the third International Day, there is as dire a need as ever to pay attention to warning signs of atrocity crimes and to take immediate action to address them.
