United Nations Day on 24 October 2017 marks the 72nd anniversary of the entry into force of the UN Charter in 1945. With the ratification of this founding document by the majority of signatory States, including the five permanent members of the Security Council, the United Nations officially came into existence. This day has been celebrated as UN Day since 1948 to promote the aims and achievements of the United Nations worldwide and to foster support for its work. Through Resolution 2782 of the year 1971, the General Assembly declared the day international holiday and recommended that it should be observed as a public holiday by all member states.
