Nantucket

MASSACHUSETTS

BY JIM FLYNN, FOUNDER AND EDITOR OF BESTWEEKENDS.COM

N antucket is New England at its most picture-postcard perfect, and
even in the peak of summer, there’s always an empty stretch of
sandy beach to be found. Outdoor activities abound, and there
are fine museums, smart restaurants and fun bars.

Destination Overview

About 30 miles off the coast of Massachusetts sits the magical island of
Nantucket, unmatched in its beauty and tranquility. Once the whaling
capital of the world, Nantucket is 14 miles long and 3.5 miles wide with
82 miles of beaches. It has a charm like few other places with cobblestone
streets and gas lamps, quaint lanes of cedar shingled cottages and homes
surrounded by white fences and adorned with window boxes of colourful
flowers. Lighthouses and cliffs, ponds and moors, cranberry bogs and
fields of wildflowers make the island the perfect romantic hideaway.

The locals are obsessed with preserving the historical integrity of the
island and building and renovation codes are strictly enforced; forty per-
cent of the island can never be built upon. There are no fast food outlets,
no national chains (except 2 food stores), no neon signs, no garish archi-
tecture and no traffic lights.

WHERE/WHAT TO EAT

• Black Eyed Susan’s (www.black-eyedsusans.com), for homemade breakfast.
• Cru (www.crunantucket.com), on the Harbour for lunch.
• Brotherhood of Thieves (www.brotherhoodofthieves.com), best burgers in town.
• The Pearl (www.thepearlnantucket.com).
• Provisions (www.provisionsnantucket.com), for sandwiches to take to the beach.
• Galley Beach (www.galleybeach.net).
• Topper’s (www.wauwinet.com).
• Company of the Cauldron (www.companyofthecauldron.com), offers one

delicious 3 course dinner each night.
• Le Languedoc Bistro (www.lelanguedocbistro.com), for steak frites and red

Burgundy; one of life’s real pleasures.

worth the effort. The flight options seem to open up seasonally Except for the dead of winter, Nantucket is enjoyable in any

GETTING AROUND

Most shopping, dining and cultural activities are centered
around town and there is a good bus system on the island. The
island is so beautiful and some of the best attractions are
spread around the island, so a car, even a rental for a couple of
days, is suggested. HH

TECH IN 2019:

WHAT WILL

BE HOT? If you thought 2018 was a good year for tech –
smarter smartphones, huge 4K TVs and voice-
activated speakers – wait ‘til you get a load of
what 2019 will usher in. In fact, tech journalists
like yours truly just spent four consecutive days

at the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES)

BY MARC SALTZMAN in Las Vegas to play around with tomorrow’s

tech. The following are just a few gadgets and

other technologies worth getting excited about

over the coming months.

Smart home tech

Expect to see a ton of artificial intelligence (A.I.) controlled devices in

the home, whether it’s smart refrigerators that can tell you when food

is about to expire, or light fixtures that sense room occupancy to Alexa-

or Google-powered smart screens. Saving you time, money and aggra-

vation, these next-generation devices might seem like science-fiction

but CES attendees kicked the tires on a ton of innovative smart home

gadgets last month.

12 HUMBER HAPPENINGS | WINTER 2019 Know when to fold ‘em

While a few companies will have foldable smart-
phones that essentially turn the device into a
big-screen tablet when unraveled — such as the
FlexPai from Royole (pictured above) — Samsung
is expected to dominate this space with its so-
called Galaxy F sometime this spring. The world’s
first foldable Galaxy might sport a 4.5-inch dis-
play when closed yet folds out to a tablet-style
7.3-inch OLED screen. And then there’s the LG
Flex phone, a “rollable” Android phone that
might also debut in 2019.

W W W. H B S C A . C A

Wild about wireless

To date, “wireless charging” means you need to place your
phone down on a special mat to charge up without needing a
cable. But what if you could just have it on your kitchen
counter or maybe at a table at a coffee shop and it just starts
charging up wirelessly? This is where Wi-Charge comes in as
it charges up devices via a transmitter elsewhere in the room
using infrared flight to transmit power to the battery. And yes,
it’s said to be safe.

Smell-o-vision meets VR?

In case virtual reality isn’t immersive enough for you by folding in 360-
degree vision, spatialized audio and haptic vibrations when you touch
objects, 2019 may be the year you also smell the digital world you’re in.
From a company called VAQSO VR, it’s a small Bluetooth device used
with any head-mounted display supporting up to five scent cartridges.
Hope you’re not visiting a virtual zoo in the near future!

5G is coming

As you may or may not have heard, 5G –
fifth-generation cellular wireless tech-
nology — is expected to deliver up to 100
times the speed of 4G LTE. If this is to be
believed, you might just cancel your infe-
rior home Wi-Fi in favour of 5G. South of
the border, Sprint’s 5G network is sched-
uled to go live in the first half of 2019,
with nine cities confirmed so far, just as
smartphone makers are readying their
5G-supported products for this year.

Smarter electric cars

The 2020 Rivian R1T and R1S concept cars are being billed as the world’s first Elec-
tric Adventure Vehicles which will give you upwards of 650 kilometres – that’s
from Toronto to Algonquin Park and back (with 100km to spare) — with its Quad-
Motor System for superior control on- and off-road and seating for up to seven
people. Of course, expect to see several self-driving (autonomous) driving tech-
nologies in 2019 as well. HH

HUMBER BAY PARK:

A WINTER HAVEN

30 HUMBER HAPPENINGS | WINTER 2019 outside the city.  Since we are fortunate to live so
close to Humber Bay Park, this park too offers a wealth
of possibilities during the winter season.

Walking along the shore trail or standing on the
beach, one can take in the changing moods of Lake
Ontario and the view of the Toronto skyline.  There are
several well-marked trails for hiking, and there are
plenty of opportunities for snowshoeing, cross-country
skiing, and skating.

Viewing winter wildlife is one of the top things you
can experience when heading to Humber Bay Park this
winter.  In the fall, chipmunks and squirrels store food,
and during winter they awake for two to three days to
feed on their reserves. Groundhogs hibernate in their
dens throughout the winter.

A number of birds and waterfowl spend winter and
also find shelter in Humber Bay Park.  It’s fascinating to
observe traces of bird activity in the wooded areas.
Many ducks, such as Buffleheads, Hooded Mergansers,
Red-breasted Mergansers,  Redheads, Scaups, and
White-winged Scoters also stay in the filtration ponds
(Dunker’s Pond) in the east end of the park where they
gather and feed.  Mute swans are also a winter fixture,
as are the ubiquitous gulls.  Peregrine Falcons and Red-
tailed Hawks visit as well, and let’s not forget the
ever-present Northern Cardinals.

Humber Bay Park is certainly a winter lover’s paradise
although it is even lovelier and more magical under
snow cover.  Please enjoy your local park responsibly
and appreciate its winter treasures. HH
