TAKING POSITIVES IN
RESPONSE TO LOCKDOWN
Being in lockdown from the coronavirus is undoubtedly one of the most difficult
challenges we could face. Despite the alarming amount of damage and stress we
are experiencing, there are positive responses we can still take from it. The
heartfelt appreciation of our key workers and the importance of connecting with
each other for example. Not to mention the significance we can see in protecting
every member of our society more equally and living more sustainably in future.
We do not have to look far for inspiration in MK…
Communities are mobilising to look after each
other and find new ways of living and doing
business together. We are seeing great numbers
of volunteers organising to pick up shopping and
prescriptions for vulnerable people and have
had telephone friendship teams and various
“virtual” activities set up to help keep us
connected in our physical isolation.
Creating more self-sufficient communities
Lockdown means we have slowed down to appreciate nature and our gardens more;
learning to grow our own veg at home for greater self-sufficiency for example. Some
of us are topping up food supplies by staying home and ordering tasty, plastic-free
alternatives to the supermarket by buying dairy, meat and veg delivery boxes and
supporting our local farms and shops. My Refill Market, one of MK’s few zero waste
shops, gives us more ethical choice when it comes to online shopping now too.
The amazing effort of Community Action:MK has seen them match 100s of MK
volunteers with several local groups and organisations to help deliver food and
equipment and for emotional support. Check their website communityactionmk.org
for the list of local activity in your parish or get in contact if your organisation needs
volunteers, you want to help, or to see how you can support the crowdfunding
campaigns to help those most in need in MK.
Every action makes a difference & you have the power to bring about change.
