GRASP
SUMMER CORRESPONDENCE

GRASP is a summer
correspondence course
in Math and Reading
for…

Kindergarten through 8th grade students, which was
developed by curriculum specialists in the Grand Rapids
public schools. The curriculum is aligned with, state and
national standards. Students will receive their packet of 9
modules before school is dismissed for the summer. Students
complete each module and mail it to The Scoring Center
where it is evaluated. The results are then returned to the
participants. It is recommended that students register for the
grade they have just completed.

There is also an ONLINE version available for
students in 4th through 8th grades.

Academic Success Math Learning Center

The district’s math curriculum department has planned a new comprehensive
program designed for the diverse needs of 6-8 grade math students. Included in the
program offerings are new state-of-the-art online individualized instruction
components, teacher guided instruction and small group support sessions. Hands-
on math tools will be used to strengthen and extend math knowledge. This new
approach is intended to enhance math skills for students from basic mathematical
concepts to Algebra and Geometry related concepts. Using this more individualized
approach, all students will benefit including those needing additional support to those
seeking enhanced academic challenges.

Academic Success Strategies

Students will learn how to take tests, how to become organized and how to study.
Students will identify their personal learning style and utilize the strategies to optimize
learning.

Academic Success Reading/Literature

Basic skills are covered, such as how to write a successful answer to a
comprehension question, dictionary skills and vocabulary building activities. High
level thinking skills are emphasized. Readings will include a novel, and various other
forms of literature.

Tuition for Troy School District Residents: $150.00 per class
Tuition for Out of District Residents: $165.00 per class

ENRICHMENT POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

REGISTRATION PROCEDURE

Students may register online at www.troyceonline.com or in person at the Niles
Center (201 W. Square Lake Road, between Crooks and Livernois) between 8am and
4pm Monday through Friday. Phone-in registration is no longer accepted. We accept
ALL major credit cards, debit cards, check (payable to Troy Continuing Education),
and cash payments. Registrants will be contacted if a class is cancelled. Please
note, there will be no prorated registration fees for classes registered after the start
date.

REFUND POLICY

Cancellations made more than 7 days prior to the start of the class will receive a full
refund, minus a $10 processing fee. Cancellations made less than 7 days prior to the
start of the class will receive a full refund, minus a $25 processing fee. Cancellations
made after the first class session has met must request a refund by 4pm the next
business day. A pro-rated refund minus the cost of the first class session and minus
a $25 processing fee will be issued. No refunds will be issued for cancellations made
after the 4pm deadline. For one or two day classes, a 48 hour notification is required
for cancellation. No refunds will be given with less than a 48 hour notice. No fee for
tranfer of classes.

All refunds will be returned by the method in which the initial registration was
processed. Credit card refunds will be posted back onto the card and can take up to
10 business days to show on your statement. Cash or check refunds will be issued
via a check mailed to your home and can take up to 4 weeks for processing.

RETURNED CHECK

A $15 processing fee will be charged for checks returned by the bank for non-
sufficient funds (NSF checks.) The full cost of the class, including the NSF fee, must
be paid immediately by cash or credit card in order to continue particiation within the
class.

STUDENT BEHAVIOR

If a student’s behavior is inappropriate, their parent or guardian will be notified to pick
them up immediately. If a second incidence occurs, the student will be removed for
the duration of the class sessions and no refund will be issued.

LATE PICK UP

We require students to be picked up promptly at the end of their class session. Late
pick up fees will begin at 8 minutes after the scheduled end of class. Fees of $1 per
minute up to 15 minutes will be charged. From 15-30 minutes the fee will increase to
$2 per minute. Any amount of time beyond 30 minutes will be charged $5 per minute.
All fees must be paid in cash at time of pick up.

SCHOOL CLOSINGS

If Troy schools are closed due to inclement weather, all enrichment classes held in
schools will be cancelled that day. When possible, an additional class will
automatically be added to the end of the session to serve as a make up class or
instructor may opt to add additional minutes to the end of each class to make up time
needed. No partial refunds will be given if you are unable to attend the make up
classes. Partial refund will be given if 3 or more classes are unable to be
rescheduled.

ENRICHMENT POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

SENIOR DISCOUNT

Senior citizens 60 and over with valid proof of age may register at a discounted fee
for select enrichment classes.

SWIM CLASS POLICIES

• No running on the pool deck.
• No food or drinks are allowed in the pool or locker room areas.
• Absolutely no shoes or strollers are allowed on the pool deck.
• Bring appropriate swimsuit and towel to class.
• Long hair must be well secured.
• With the exception of children 5 years and under, no one may enter the

locker room of the opposite gender.

• Swimmer is responsible for articles left in the locker room. Locks may be

used on lockers.

• Parents may observe from the bleachers at any time during all levels.
• All additional Enrichment Policies and Procedures are in effect for all swim

classes.

NONDISCRIMINATION POLICY

Policy of Non-Discrimination Students, Parents and Citizens of the Troy School
District: Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 provides that no person shall,
on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be
subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving
federal financial assistance except as may be permitted by law. Section 504 of the
Rehabilitation Act of 1973 provides that no otherwise qualified handicapped individual
shall, solely by reason of his or her handicap, be excluded from participation in, be
denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity
receiving federal financial assistance. It is the policy of the Troy School District not to
discriminate on the basis of sex or handicap in admission or access to treatment or
employment in its programs and activities. The Troy School District periodically
reviews its educational and employment programs and activities to assure
compliance with Title IX and Section 504. The Troy School District has established a
grievance procedure to provide for the prompt and equitable resolution of complaints
by students, employees or members of the community alleging discrimination on the
basis of sex or handicap. The grievance procedure is available through any school
office or by contacting the Coordinator for Title IX and Section 504 matters listed
below. In addition, a school district employee who is part of a bargaining unit may
process -64- a complaint through the grievance procedure established in the
collective bargaining agreement. In accordance with federal regulations, the Troy
School District has appointed Mr. Jordan Harris, Assistant Superintendent of
Employee Services, as Title IX and Section 504 Coordinator.

Southern Michigan Obedience Training Club (SMOTC) offers this foundation
Introduction to Obedience class for all dogs who are at least 6 months old. Learn to
train your dog to heel (walk) on lead next to you, sit and down stay, come when called
and stand – to become a more enjoyable member of the family, as well as encourage
participation in obedience competition. This is a fast-moving class to teach you to
teach your dog basic obedience. This class will require that you work with your dog

Therapy Dog Preparation and Evaluation
This class will help to prepare students and their dogs to become a certified Therapy
Dog team. The class will also address safety precautions for you and your dog,
proper visiting techniques, getting around medical equipment, and more. For this
class, your dog will need to work reliably and test on a flat buckle collar or non-
correcting harness (leash fastens on the dog’s back) with a 6-foot leather or nylon
leash.Dogs will need to be proficient and reliable in all basic obedience commands
(heel, sit, down, leave it and stay). We highly recommend that students have taken
one or more obedience classes prior to registering for this class. It is preferred that
Intermediate Dog Obedience - Canine Good Citizen (CGC (offered by SMOTC) is
completed prior to enrolling for the Therapy Dog Preparation Class. Contact the

Strong Body/Peaceful Mind Yoga
This slow flow class focuses on using your breath to move you through postures

Instrumental music ensemble for youth with special needs. Designed for students
who have at least a basic understanding of an instrument (any band or orchestra
instrument including piano, keyboard, percussion, and guitar). All youth with special

Introduction to Fencing (ages 7-14)
This class will teach the basics of this modern Olympic sport. Fencing is a physically
and mentally demanding sport that improves speed, agility, and reflexes. Our fencers
use their mind and body to overcome their adversary. They learn to apply problem
solving skills under pressure and shake hands to show respect regardless of the
result. Equipment is included. Dress in sports clothing including sneakers and sports

Level I - Introduction to Water Skills
The focus of this class is to help students feel comfortable in the water and learn
primary water skills. Successful completion of this class will result in the student’s
ability to: complete 10 fully submerged head bobs, float independently for 5 seconds
on both front and back, flutter kick with minimal support on both front and back with
straight knees and pointed toes, front and back crawl for 10 yards with minimal
support, and learn basic safety skills including swimming in a life jacket. This is a

fully submerged head bobs, float independently for 5 seconds on both front and back
and recover to a vertical position, front and back glides, flutter kick independently on
both front and back with straight knees and pointed toes, front and back crawl for 15
yards independently, proficient rotary breathing on front crawl, jump off diving board
independently to a teacher in the water, and tread water for 30 seconds without
