Since 1965 the Bricklayers, Masons Independent Union of Canada, Local 1 has been
representing members in all types of construction including but not limited to high rise
residential, low rise residential, industrial commercial and institutional construction and also
including but not limited to renovation, alteration and repairs. In 1993 we entered into a
longstanding working agreement with the Labourers’ International Union of North America,
Local 183 jointly and collectively through the Masonry Council of Unions Toronto and Vicinity
we expanded our membership by negotiating the subcontracting clause in the Collective
Agreement hence obtaining the protection of the High Rise and Low Rise Builders. We offer
one of the most prominent wage, benefit and pension packages in the construction industry.

MARIO ALVES CROWNED
WORLDS BEST BRICKLAYER

Congratulations to LIUNA Local 183 member & Mason, Mario
Alves of A & M Masonry from Hamilton, Ontario. Alves, 30,
became the first Canadian to win the title of Worlds Best
Bricklayer at the 2019 Spec Mix Bricklayer 500 World
Championship in Las Vegas on January 23, 2019.

With the help of his brother, Mason Tender Michael Alves,
Mario delivered his best performance to claim the crown.
Alves laid 760 perfect bricks in 60 minutes in the 17th annual
competition that pitted 27 world-class bricklayers against each
other.

The mason from Hamilton won a 2019 Ford F-250 XLT 4×4
truck, an Essick EM120 HYD mortar mixer, and $10,000 in
cash and prizes. On behalf of the 58,000 members of Local
183, congratulations & keep up the great work!
