Summer 2011

England top rod and Brown Bowl winner Ollie Avis Scorching Menteith

The Team with Manager Phil Longstaff (left) and The Youth International was held on the Lake of Menteith in Scotland at the
Coach Carl Nixon (right) end of this July and the team along with all their supporters, parents and the
rest had a great week. The only slight downside was the result, but in every
other respect the event was a great success for us. In unusually bright and hot
weather the team bonded and matured with some excellent performances.

In form Ollie Avis was the Brown Bowl winner with a cracking performance.
Captain Ryan Worker proved to all that he was the right choice showing great
maturity and authority. And Manager Phil Longstaff worked tirelessly with
unbelievable commitment and passion.

All team members contributed, supported by coaches Carl Nixon with Carl
Malpass. It was good to see.

The third place was a momentary disappointment. We move on to Loch Owel
in Ireland next year, full of confidence knowing that we’re building a team to
be proud of.

The team was
Ryan Worker (Captain), Kieran Bonas (Vice Captain), Dom Sheratte, Oscar
Boatfield, Adam Worker, Ashley Gillies, Ben Brooke, Fen Oakley, Jack Shelley,
James Atkinson, John Mackintosh, Oliver Avis, Ryan Matthews, Sam Edmonds,
Callum Smalley (Reserve).

Phil Longstaff Loch Style Manager’s report from Menteith

The England Youth Team headed up to Scotland in good spirits after
comfortably winning the two previous internationals. They were greeted with
3 solid days of sunshine and minimal wind - hardly normal weather for this
part of the world!

After two days of successful practice, the team were all catching good numbers
of fish to straight lined nymphs on either a midge tip line or a straight floater.
A pattern quickly developed with regards to key areas on the lake and it was
apparent that the match would be won or lost in Gateside bay.

Unfortunately for the England team, the predicted cloud cover for match day
didn’t materialise and the fish moved deep in an attempt to get away from the
glaring sunshine. This left their previously productive methods floundering
and by the time that the lads had adapted, the match was lost. Home
advantage proved to be invaluable and the Scottish team ran out as clear
winners.

The England lads gave everything that they had on match day and we are all
proud of the effort that they put in.

Congratulations must go the Scottish team on an impressive win and also for
organising a faultless event.

Rest assured that the England lads will re-group and do everything that they
can to take gold in Ireland.

England caught a total of 41 fish for 97lb 0.2oz, the heaviest English Bag went
to Oliver Avis with 8 fish for 17lb 11.6oz and the heaviest English Fish was
caught by Adam Worker which was 4lb.

Youth National

What a contrast to last year! 20 young anglers fished the day and there were no
blanks. The entries were marginally up on last year and some good bags were
recorded.

The results and placings are on the next page. The top 10 go through to the
International in Ireland next year with 4 rolling over from this year. We will lose a
number of our team of course because they will be over 18 at the time of the next
International.

The weather was damp and cold! Thanks to all the boatmen - especially when some, like Peter Oldham here, have to
suffer being impaled on a black booby courtesy of Oscar Boatfield.

The winning team at the Prison Services match Some other competitions

the Prison Service were third!
Kieran being presented with his prize by Bernard
Cribbens at Farmoor Alan West Memorial Trophy

Sixty five anglers took to Rutland Water for the first competition of the 2011
season the Alan West Memorial Trophy. Many of the current England Youth Team
including Adam and Ryan Worker, Kerian Bonas, Sam Edmunds and their new
team manager Phil Longstaff.

Best placed was fifth for Sam Edmunds with 8 fish for 19lb 0oz.

2011 Greys Pairs

This was held at Stocks Reservoir and is a pairs match where one angler from each
pair fishes from the shore and the other from the boat. Ryan Mathews and his
partner caught 15 fish including one estimated to be 15lbs plus.

After Ryan had completed his four fish limit he hooked an absolute monster.
Every time he thought it was beaten and reached for his net it got its head down
and went on another powerful run. You could actually see it towing the boat
about. After about 20 minutes it finally came to net they quickly estimated it to
be around 15lbs and returned it to the water. Unfortunately for Ryan all returned
trout only add 2lbs to the weight of your first four trout, it was 2lbs that was well
deserved! But a great result - first with 34lbs 12oz.

30 April 2011 Thames Water Shield

This is the annual Open Bank competition at Farmoor Reservoir near Oxford,
incorporating a charity auction which is our biggest fundraiser of the year.
A fantastic £1052 was raised for the Youth thanks to the persuasive skills of
auctioneer Bernard Cribbins, the generous donations from many, and particularly
the support of Masterline Walker, Thames Water and Farmoor Reservoir.

The actual fishing was tricky for those who had difficulty casting a full line and
more, as the fish were holding at 40 yards and deep. However many of the lads
caught their limit with Kieran Bonas winning the Senior competition, the Thames
Water Shield. The Peter Stone Trophy for the biggest bag by an under 16 year old
was won by Adam Worker.

The Anglian Water Airflow

This competition has seen our teams doing really well.

The Southern team qualified for the Southern final and the Northern Team are
one step ahead and have qualified for the National Final. There have been some
fantastic performances - James Atkinson was one of only two full bags at Rutland
in the Northern qualifier. Sadly the Southern lads crashed out in the second
round, but we wish Carl and his Northerners well in the Final.

The team consisted of Carl Malpass, Tom Gott, Ryan Matthews, James Atkinson,
John Mackintosh & Oliver Avis

A member of the Northern team, Tom Gott, also came 3rd in the CEFF Northern
Rivers Qualifier and has qualified for the finals on the Maelor stretch of the River
Dee in August. Good luck Tom.

Two brilliant performances

Kieran Bonas is second in The Lexus Individual

Kieran came second in a field of 98 anglers in this years Lexus European
Flyfishing Championship Final held at Chew Valley on Thursday 18 August.

What a fantastic effort. One more pound and he’d have won the car - which
he’s not old enough to drive - a Lexus RX 450 hybrid!

Thanks to Cliff Waters of Fishypics

Kieran with some of his prizes - a few ounces off the
Lexus car!

Kieran holds a superb brown from Grafham caught on one of the practice sessions.

Adam Worker wins the Evening League

Cambridge Invicta’s Evening League at Grafham, which runs over 15 weeks
from May to August, was easily won by Adam Worker. He was around 20 fish
ahead of the next rod which included some of the most consistent anglers in
the Midlands.

Adam has spent a lot of time cleaning fish Practice days
this year!
Training days have been held at various venues. Team members attended
these to hone their skills in various techniques, such as the hang, nymphs,
dries and so on. Anglian Water and Ben Dobson of Stocks reservoir have been
extremely helpful in supporting us and we are very grateful.
