THE PITCH REVOLUTION BEGINS.

...there is no other system that offers a
2.3m critical fall height for World Rugby

Labosport Ltd have worked with Notts Sport in the development of the
ShockWave EcoBase system since 2014; in the research and development
stages, laboratory testing and in the post completion field testing since its
launch.

Based on the testing we have undertaken, there is no other system that
offers a 2.3m critical fall height for World Rugby (Reg. 22) compliance
(requirements of 1.3 m) while at the same time providing good performance
for shock absorptions and vertical deformation. Normally a critical fall
height of 2.3m would result in a very soft and tiring surface that would
struggle to meet the shock absorption and deformation requirements.
ShockWave does not have this problem which is currently unique from our
testing experiences.

With our 25+ years’ experience of sports pitch systems, we have found that
ShockWave EcoBase provides an unrivalled and unique performance for
3rd Generation (3G) pitches due to its combined results across key areas
such as shock absorbency, critical fall height and deformation.

Labosport believes innovation is key to sustained success by driving
quality, and ShockWave EcoBase sets a new benchmark for artificial turf
sports systems. We are pleased to have to been a part of the ShockWave
development and its ongoing success, and we look forward to seeing
many pitches in the future using ShockWave technology.

ABOUT SHOCKWAVE

An innovative new shockpad and base system that has been two years
in development, Notts Sport’s ShockWave tiles and ShockWave EcoBase
System are set to revolutionise the construction of synthetic sports pitches.
ShockWave tiles, so-called because of their wave-like contours, slot
together like jigsaw pieces across a prepared base foundation to form
a combined upper base and shockpad performance layer. Notts Sport
have used a similar tile system as part of their trusted ChildsPlay solution
for many years, and following intensive research, have re-engineered and
enhanced this product for use in sport with an upgraded thickness and
density.
ShockWave is laid on top of a reduced depth stone topped with a synthetic
grass surface to form the ShockWave EcoBase System for unrivalled
performance and safety for your synthetic sports pitch project.

ShockWave

& ShockWave EcoBase

The structural stability given by the ShockWave tile means that half the
depth of quarried aggregate is required, helping to halve the installation
time and reduce its carbon footprint. The 100% recyclable ShockWave
system is a much more environmentally-friendly solution than alternative
designs.
ShockWave is guaranteed for a minimum of 30 years for compliant
performance for World Rugby (Reg. 22), FIFA, GAA and Rugby League,
making it ideal for 3G pitches.
Constructed from Expanded Polypropylene (EPP) which is used in car
bumpers, cycle helmets and packaging materials, ShockWave was
developed in consultation with major sports governing bodies and is
manufactured at world class plants with world class supply chain partners.
The system provides the safety benefits from the automotive industry and
impact absorbent applications, providing over 2.2m critical fall height,
minimising the risk of head impact injuries in contact sports like Rugby,
Gaelic Football and American Football.

The system has gone through full laboratory testing at Loughborough
University and MIRA, with further performance and drainage testing at
independent accredited test houses.

SHOCKWAVE:

SHOCKWAVE: FROM LAB TO PITCH

By Nick McLaren BSc (Hons) - Head of Research and Development
During manufacture each and every ShockWave tile passes through a series
of quality control tests to ensure that it complies with both Notts Sport’s
and our manufacturer’s stringent requirements. It is also highly important
that the ShockWave system meets the ISO/TS 16949:2009 standard.
Manufacturing process:
As every tile comes out of the bespoke ShockWave tool, the dimensions
are recorded to ensure that they are within the tight tolerances of +- 2mm,
or +-0.17% of the total length of a tile. During production a sample of tiles
are regularly weighed to make sure that the correct density of expanded
polypropylene is maintained. The data is continuously analysed to
determine if the machine’s settings need to be altered during production
which minimises waste and downtime should any abnormalities occur.

25

ShockWave

& ShockWave EcoBase

The tiles are stored on trolleys when they leave the tool which are then
wheeled into large ovens to dry. The carefully controlled and measured
drying process stabilises the tiles to ensure that the dimensional stability
and functional performance is unaffected by environmental conditions,
such as temperature and humidity, when installed and used on site (even
in the more extreme conditions experienced outside of the UK).
Each trolley has a unique barcode which is scanned at every stage of
the manufacturing process, detailing the product, batch and production
numbers and the stage within the process. When the tiles are loaded onto
the delivery vehicle, they receive their final scan which will ensure that a tile
never misses a part of the well-orchestrated manufacturing process.

27

ShockWave

& ShockWave EcoBase

In house quality control for complete peace of mind:
When ShockWave tiles are delivered to Notts Sport, a random sample of
tiles are run through a series of quality control testing.
The size (length, width and thickness) and mass of the tiles are recorded,
as well as the functional performance in accordance with BSEN testing
processes for sports facilities.
• Force reduction: testing is undertaken in three positions across the

tile using an artificial athlete to measure how absorbing the tile is
compared to a hard rigid floor
• T he Head Injury Criterion (HIC): the HIC test is used to ensure compliance
with World Rugby standards and GAA sports, and determines a
severity value for head impact injuries
• Peak-G: tested and recorded using a Triax 2000, Peak G values are
compared against historical data held on the material to ensure it
meets the tight tolerances accepted

29

ShockWave

& ShockWave EcoBase

• Regular Calibration: all test equipment (including the artificial athlete
and Triax 2000 test devices) are regularly calibrated externally and
values are recorded before and after testing on known samples to
ensure the repeatability and accuracy of the recorded data

As a result of the testing processes, if irregularities are found, the volume
and air flow of the material can be investigated at the manufacturing plant
to determine the exact cause of the problem. Tiles found to fall short of the
tight manufacturing tolerances can be broken up back into raw components
and reused in other expanded polypropylene or polypropylene products.
All Notts Sport ShockWave EcoBase products are manufactured using
virgin material to ensure the tight manufacturing requirements and the long
term warranty offered against the product.
