OUNDLE SCHOOL

OUNDLE SCHOOL #NSOundleSch

Oundle, Peterborough, PE8 4GH

The vision at Oundle School was to deliver an elite level 1st XI Hockey pitch on the footprint of
an existing hockey pitch, with the construction of 2no. new international standard hockey pitches
capable of supporting tennis activities in the summer term.
In addition, the school’s cricket facilities were in need of improvement so a new state of the art
20 lane cricket practice facility (10no. lane non-turf and 10no. lane natural turf) was developed to
meet the schools requirements for elite performance and capacity.

Cricket facility specification: Hockey facility specification:

10 Lane cricket practice facility 101.40m x 63.00m (2 pitches)

• 3no. Envelope System New surface

NottsGrass NG12 & hard porous envelope • Reconstructed & reconsolidated formation

Level

“We have slower spin nets at one end, the middle lanes are medium pace and at the
other end they’re quick, so we can manoeuvre kids about. It’s great. We have a big link
with the Northamptonshire Premier League club and their cricketers use them and look
forward to it massively every time they come along, so it’s wonderful for everyone.”

“Notts Sport has put in one of the best facilities in the world – it’s excellent.”

John Crawley, Director of Cricket

THE DIXIE
GRAMMAR

SCHOOL

THE DIXIE GRAMMAR SCHOOL 11

Market Bosworth, Leicestershire, CV13 0LE

Dixie Grammar School wanted to deliver an international standard sand dressed Hockey pitch
on the footprint of a disused playing field with poor drainage.
In order to create access for users and players, a new 40 space car park and 70m access drive
was made, along with extensive soft landscaping to mitigate the impact of a new floodlit facility
in its rural landscape.
Notts Sport worked with the project team for over 2 years to deliver the project to a successful
handover in Summer 2014.

Facility specification:
• 18mm Sand dressed synthetic grass
• Pre-fabricated foam shock pad
• Dynamic stone base

“Notts Sport were on hand throughout the 18 month development process to develop the
specification. They acted as our planning agent to obtain permission before tendering to a
range of quality independent contractors, so we had confidence that they would be able to
deliver the construction of the pitch.
Aside from planning fees we had no upfront costs to consider on a scheme that was not
guaranteed to go ahead, which gave us confidence that Notts Sport were going to give us the
best possible chance of success. Without Notts Sport I don’t think we would have been able to
deliver the pitch and certainly not in the 2 year period we ultimately achieved.”
Martin Roe, Bursar

HOLCOMBE
HOCKEY CLUB

HOLCOMBE HOCKEY CLUB #NSHolcombeHC

Curtis Way, Chatham, Rochester, Medway, ME1 2TQ

Holcombe Hockey Club is the home of more than 10 Team GB hockey players, and is one of the
leading clubs in Europe, yet it had an aged hockey pitch with performance issues, in particularly
problems with ball bounce.
Notts Sport were engaged to reconstruct the pitch base and provide a truly elite performance
for the main 1st XI water based pitch. In-depth design consultancy with players (including Barry
Middleton – Team GB Captain) resulted in a specification tailored to meet the exacting standards
required.
After completing this priority project, Notts Sport were also asked to resurface the adjacent sand
dressed pitch, to create a high quality facility for all players in the Hockey Club, regardless of the
team they played in.

Facility specification:
• 1no. Notts Sport sand dressed & 1no. Notts Sport water based
• In-situ rubber 15mm shock pad
• New engineered macadam base on water based pitch

Build Cost: £587,000

“The new Holcombe pitch is an absolutely fantastic surface to play on. The ball fizzes across the
surface and holds the water really well. It’s a really great pitch and we’re really lucky to have such
an international standard here. It’s so much better than the old one.”
Sam Quek, Holcombe, England and Team GB

CENTRAL PARK

CENTRAL PARK

New York City, NY, United States

Central Park is the most visited urban park in the United States, as well as one of the most filmed
locations in the world, managed and maintained by Central Park Conservancy under contract
with the City of New York.
Over the past three years, Notts Sport have supplied their SurfacePlay impact absorbing
playground surfacing system to some of the Central Park Conservancy’s playground projects
as part of their ‘Plan for Play’ restoration programme. The SurfacePlay systems have been well
received, so much so that in April 2016 the East 72nd Street Play Area was voted by the New York
City public as the favourite play area in Central Park.
As well as this award winning scheme, the Surface Play systems have been installed in what many
say is the world’s busiest play space at East 110th Street Playground, illustrating its popularity and,
just as importantly, its durability and play value throughout its life.
With many more SurfacePlay schemes planned throughout 2016 and 2017, you can expect to see
more cutting edge designs installed throughout the Five Boroughs and Central Park itself.

Linkfield Road, Musselburgh, East Lothian, EH21 7RE

Founded in 1827, Loretto School is one of Britain’s leading co-educational boarding and day
schools for boys and girls aged 0-18. The vision was to improve their external sports facilities at
both the Senior and Junior School sites.
The first scheme was to complete a high profile resurfacing of the existing hockey pitch, whilst the
second scheme was developed with Cleveland Land Services Ltd to reconstruct and refurbish
the Junior School asphalt tennis courts into a high quality multi use games area.
Working closely with Neil Allan, Head of Hockey, and Stephen Howard, Bursar, Notts Sport were
challenged to transform the existing facilities, with additional improvements to its associated

Neil Allan, Head of Hockey and Scottish Hockey Coach of the Year

LEICESTERSHIRE
COUNTY CRICKET
CLUB

LEICESTERSHIRE COUNTY CRICKET CLUB

County Ground, Grace Rd, Leicester, LE2 8AD

After experiencing inconsistent performance from their indoor net facility in the previous season,
Notts Sport were engaged by Leicestershire County Cricket Club to transform the nets into an
International Standard facility, with consistent performance for the club’s professional players as
well as junior players.
This challenge was met head on by Notts Sport’s dedicated Cricket department and since
installation the feedback has been universally positive from players of all standards, including
coaches, professionals and managers.

Facility specification:
• 3no. NottsTurf Indoor including 1no. full length training lines
• 3no. NottsPad Indoor

“Introducing cutting-edge training facilities like this is an important part of our club’s ethos.
Providing players with a more authentic surface to practise on gives them a huge boost, whether
they’re established first-team professionals or youth players developing their skills.”
Wasim Khan, Leicestershire’s Chief Executive

“It’s been fantastic. It is key for us as professional sportsmen to practise on a quality wicket and
this is certainly a quality facility to use. It is very close to an outdoor wicket, which is what you
want.”
Lewis Hill, Leicestershire Wicket-keeper and Batsman

“The previous surface was quite uneven and players didn’t want to bat in here, but now with this
new surface from Notts Sport everyone wants to! The shockpad underneath makes it so much
more realistic in terms of bounce and pace.”
Keith Piper, Leicestershire Elite Development Coach

CHRIST’S COLLEGE

CHRIST’S COLLEGE #NSChristsColFinch 29

East End Road, Finchley, London, N2 0SE

The project team at Christ College had been working on an Artificial Grass Pitch project for over
10 years, but had not found a way of delivering a successful planning application or financial
solution that was viable for the School and Governing Body.
Notts Sport developed proposals fully compliant with local and national planning policies and
with the North Circular directly adjacent to the proposed footprint, this was a challenging design
process in many different ways. This expertise, coupled with Notts Sport’s unique Fast Track
Funding scheme, created a fully transparent, robust funding package, and Notts Sport were
able to deliver an international standard 3rd Generation (3G) football pitch without any capital
contribution from the College, the costs being repaid over a 7 year period.

Facility specification:
• NottsGrass 50 3 FIFA 1*
• NottsPad XC shockpad
• 250mm MOT aggregate
• 50mm 2-6mm stone

“Working with Notts Sport was a very positive experience. The solution-focused discussions
were very much aimed at meeting our needs and requirements. A first rate service which we
would recommend without reservation.“
Samson Olusanya, Headteacher

“Fantastic. Couldn’t recommend Notts Sport highly enough! They were there from beginning
to end of our project, and without their help and expertise, I am positive the project would not
have happened.
For such a big project, Notts Sport made the whole process stress and hassle free, meaning I
could get on with my job of teaching!.”
Daniel Nielsen, Head of Physical Education

KEELE UNIVERSITY

KEELE UNIVERSITY #NSKeeleUni

new basketball courts and a new-build Beach Volleyball court. All these facilities, plus the existing
hockey pitch, required new lighting which resulted in the UK’s largest sports LED installation
using state of the art technology throughout.

WOODKIRK
ACADEMY

WOODKIRK ACADEMY #NSWoodkirkAc 35

Stanbridge Lane, Wakefield, WF2 7EL

Notts Sport originally met with Woodkirk Academy in 2010 and over a 5 year period supported
the Academy in developing a comprehensive business plan for a new FIFA, World Rugby, GAA
& Rugby League compliant 3rd Generation (3G) Artificial Grass Pitch. The existing natural turf
pitches were in a very poor condition, and were unusable from November to March each year.
Using the state of the art ShockWave EcoBase technology, Woodkirk Academy were the first
customer in the world to have the system installed, and in challenging site and weather conditions
the project was completed over Winter 2015/16.
The finished facility has received high praise from users of the pitch, the wider synthetic turf
industry and National Governing Bodies, highlighting the innovation that Notts Sport aims to
bring to the customer sector on every scheme.

Facility specification:
• NottsGrass 60
• ShockWave EcoBase
• 150mm MOT none frost susceptible aggregate lower base

“The people around Leeds who came here for fixtures know how often the old pitch was hard
during the winter - we basically couldn’t use them from November through ‘til March, so to get
a new facility like this has been fantastic.
The facility has changed PE completely, and now our whole curriculum is going to move forward.
It’s been a good partnership with Notts Sport, helping us through the design and
tendering process and to the stage where now we actually have this fantastic
facility to use. They’ve held our hand all the way.”
Andrew Cox, Head of Physical Education

STANWELL SCHOOL

STANWELL SCHOOL #NSStanwellSch

Archer Road, Penarth, South Glamorgan, CF64 2XL

Stanwell School wanted to deliver an international level sand dressed hockey pitch at the school
site, and had tried and failed to obtain planning consent on numerous occasions in the preceding
10 years before meeting Notts Sport in 2012, at one of the company’s Fast Track Funding Seminars
that run every October and November throughout the UK.
From 2012 to 2014, Notts Sport developed a fully comprehensive design and planning package
which meant that consent was granted at the first attempt, in Autumn 2014.
Construction began in early 2015 and the pitch was complete by May, with additional features
including the redevelopment of a 10,000sqm redgra/shale area into a high quality natural turf
rugby pitch, using spoil created by the hockey pitch scheme.
In addition, significant works were required to create new pedestrian access, linking the new
pitch to the school site and wider transportation network.

Facility specification:
• NottsGrass SD
• NottsPad XC
• Dynamic base construction - terram, MOT type 3 stone, fine-dust blinding

PLUMCROFT
PRIMARY SCHOOL

PLUMCROFT PRIMARY SCHOOL 43

Plum Lane, Plumstead, London, SE18 3HW

The visionary Head at Plumcroft wished to create a unique playground experience for the pupils,
using Fast Track Funding to ensure that no opportunity was missed during the design process.
The resulting playground is one of the most innovative play experiences you could wish to
explore, with a London Underground Tube Carriage incorporated into the playground, along
with outdoor gym equipment, sports markings and play value added into the surface design.
Spread across separate areas around the school, the variety in design, shape and application
reinforce the old adage that the only limit in surfacing design is one’s own imagination. The
vibrant, exciting and stimulating facilities are enjoyed by the entire School, come rain or shine.

Facility specification:
• VHAF NottsSward 1150 sand filled needle punched carpet

“The ideas behind this playground were built up between my head of PE, myself, Notts Sports
and the installers Playcubed. I found all of them extremely helpful, professional and forward
looking in this process.
My vision was to make this school a place that anyone walking past would say ‘I want my child
to go to that school’ and after the changes made over this summer I feel confident that this is
undoubtedly the case.”
Richard Slade, Headteacher at Plumcroft Primary School.
