PROFESSIONAL
DEVELOPMENT AND
THE LAB-AIDS INSTITUTE

STEM educators have come to trust LAB-AIDS® as a valuable resource for innovative,
hands-on science kits and inquiry-based core science and STEM curricula. LAB-
AIDS® also offers a complete line of high quality professional development services.
At the LAB-AIDS® Institute, we work side-by-side with STEM teachers, helping them
to acquire new skills and knowledge. We work with teachers in a team approach
that enhances teaching skills — whether they’re veteran teachers, new to the
profession, or somewhere in between. The LAB-AIDS® Institute helps teachers stay
on the cutting edge of the newest innovations in STEM education and administrators
monitor and evaluate their science/ STEM programs. We have something for
everyone, whether you use our products or not.

Professional development for many of our programs is available online! Here
are a few of our most popular on-site workshops. For more information, or to
see our complete list of workshops, visit us at www.lab-aids.com/professional-
development/workshops.

SEPUP PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

SEPUP programs are written for “off the shelf” use. However, most teachers tell
us that our professional development enhances their use of the materials. Training
can be provided on all SEPUP courses, units, and modules, and is available on-
site or online. Although most Districts prefer to schedule this first-time training
during the summer, it can be scheduled at any time during the year. The following
content is provided in all workshops:

• SEPUP course design
• NGSS and Common Core support
• Learning cycle and differentiated instruction
• Classroom management
• Support for literacy, technology, and numeracy
• Assessment, and much more

Prices start at $1600/day, inclusive of all costs.

INQUIRY TEACHING AND LEARNING: SUPPORTING THE
PRACTICES OF SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING

Most science programs support an inquiry component of some kind, and the new
Next Generation Science Standards define inquiry in terms of the Practices of Science
and Engineering (SEP). Why take this course? Despite a robust research literature
supporting the use of inquiry and SEP in the science classroom, putting this research
into practice has proven elusive in many schools. What should inquiry teaching and
learning look like in the classroom? The workshop will provide concrete strategies
to support inquiry teaching and learning and the SEP of the NGSS in the science
classroom.

The workshop is appropriate for middle and high school science teachers.
Participants will receive a copy of Translating the NGSS for Classroom Instruction
(2012) by Rodger Bybee, plus equipment samples needed for the workshop.
Teachers will learn to redesign their own lessons so as to better support inquiry and
the practices of science and engineering and will examine the EQuIP and PEEC tools
from Achieve and other groups to evaluate lessons for their inquiry and SEP content.

This workshop can be delivered in your own school or District for $1850, inclusive of
all costs, for up to 20 teachers.

INTRODUCING THE NEXT GENERATION SCIENCE STANDARDS

This workshop will provide an overview of the NGSS, including background and
context of the Standards and how they relate to previous national science standards,
such as the National Science Education Standards and Benchmarks for Science
Literacy. Workshop content will draw from a variety of National Science Foundation-
supported curriculum to emphasize and support instructional shifts in science.
These shifts include a focus on teaching disciplinary core ideas that reflect real world
interconnections; integrating science and engineering practices, and crosscutting
concepts in all grades, while maintaining continence, coherence, and continuity.
Teachers will use hands on techniques to examine the architecture of the standards,
the use of disciplinary core ideas, practices of science and engineering, and cross-
cutting concepts.
Participants will:

• Learn about the NGSS and how they relate to previous national science
standards efforts

• Understand the structure of the NGSS, the DCIs, practices of science and
engineering, and cross-cutting concepts

• Create their own “standards” using the NGSS three main elements to better
understand the process

• What does this look like in the classroom? Brainstorm lesson sequences
that address the NGSS

• Examine samples of high quality science lessons for all students, including
ELL/dual language/diverse learners

All teachers will receive a copy of The NSTA Reader’s Guide to the Next Generation
Science Standards by Harold Pratt and of the NSTA Quick Reference Guide to the
NGSS, edited by Ted Willard (teachers can choose among the elementary, middle, or
high school versions). This is a one day workshop, with some advance reading. This
workshop can be delivered in your own school or District for $1850, inclusive of all
costs, for up to 20 teachers.

JOIN US FOR THE
2016 SEPUP ACADEMY!

Join science educators from across the country to improve your use of materials from
the Science Education for Public Understanding Program (SEPUP). The program
includes presentations and workshops led by senior staff from SEPUP and LAB-AIDS.
After completing a foundation sequence of core content, you may choose elective
sessions to design a custom professional development plan tailored to your needs. The
Academy is designed for teachers who want to improve their classroom effectiveness
and for administrators seeking to take leadership and develop their local capacity for
the SEPUP program.

This year’s Academy will take place in the Rocky Mountain resort areas near Silverthorne,
CO, July 25-29. Tuition is $1895, which includes single occupancy accommodation, all
books and materials, and all meals except one evening dinner. Air or ground travel to
