Frequently Asked Questions

Why is orientation necessary?

Orientation is dedicated for you to make the determination if you have the time, motivation, and commitment to
attend classes and complete our program.

We use this time to inform students about the program and the benefits that can be gained if you are serious about
your future successes. We provide information about academic advising, goal setting, and planning for future
opportunities.

Orientation is also a time to meet the staff and the fellow students that you will be engaging with in class.
Because we want you to be successful!

What are the classes in this program like?

We offer Adult Basic Education (ABE) and TxCHSE classes: Basic math and language arts, Mathematical
Reasoning and Reasoning through Language Arts. We offer three levels: ABE Foundational Level I, ABE Middle
Level II, and TxCHSE Advanced Level III. Classes are offered at different times to give you the opportunity to
take both classes (subject areas) in the same semester, or you may choose to focus on one class per term. Your test
scores determine your starting class level(s).

Our ESL classes are divided into 4 levels: Basic, Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced. Your test scores
determine your starting class level.

Special transition class are offered throughout the school year and the dates and time will be posted.

How long will it take me to complete the program?

The length of time is up to you. Your commitment, dedication, and motivation to studying and attending classes
will determine your time of completion. ABE and TxCHSE students, you are highly encouraged to participate
through to Level III to be fully prepared to pass all four GED© tests.

ESL students, you are highly encouraged to participate through to Level III to be fully prepared to read, write, and
speak English.

What if I cannot continue coming to class because of a change in my work schedule?

We will try to transfer you to a different class to meet your schedule, depending on availability. We have a Distance
Learning program available. You are responsible for informing your teacher of your situation so he/she can help
you with enrolling in the distance learning classes. (See Appendix A). Remember, if you sign the policies and
procedures promising to earn the minimum required semester hours AND take the progress test, then you must
stand by your promise. The consequence is a one-year ban.

5

What determines excused and unexcused absences and incomplete homework?

Excused absences and incomplete homework reasons: self or immediate family illness; death in the family; sudden
work schedule change. Examples of unexcused absences and incomplete homework reasons: vacation; pleasure trip
out of country; planned doctor’s appointment; tired; disinterest

What happens to the Adult Education program if I stop coming to class?

NEISD Adult Education is funded with state and federal dollars. When students stop coming to class, do not earn at
least 40 hours for GED Prep classes or 50 hours for ESL classes, and/or do not take the progress test then the
program may lose funding. Losing program money could mean we cannot teach as many classes or we cannot teach
classes at all. Please help keep our program thriving by attending your class regularly and taking the required
progress test.

Goal Setting
SMART Goal Setting

“If you don't set goals for yourself, you are doomed to work to achieve the goals of someone else." ~~Brian
Tracy

What is a personal or business goal? It is ACHIEVEMENT.

What is the difference between just setting a goal and setting a SMART goal ?
Dreaming vs. Writing it down

By attending today’s orientation, you are proving that you have set a personal goal to earn your TxCHSE or to
further your ESL studies. Now, ask yourself these questions:

 How do you get to the next step?
 Have you written down your goals for your future?
 Do you know how to achieve your goal?

What are SMART goals? Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-bound/Time-based.
Specific
State your goal: What do you want to do?

 Get your high school equivalency (GED)?
 Get promoted.
 Become an:

 administrative assistant?
 welder?
 coach?
 designer?
 aircraft mechanic?
 business owner?
 When? How?
Have you ever heard someone say they have a goal to “get in shape?” Is this a specific goal?

8

Measurable
Measurable means that you can identify exactly what you will see, hear, and feel when you reach your goal. It
means breaking your goal down into measurable elements. You will need concrete evidence to know if you have
reached the goal or not. Have you made a list of things that can be checked off on your way to your goal?

 Attend TxCHSE program registration and orientation.
 Attend EVERY class.
 Participate in class and do homework.
 Register for GED tests
 Make a list of colleges or technical schools, etc.

Attainable
Is your goal attainable? This means investigating whether the goal really is acceptable to you.

Ask yourself this question: “Is getting my high school equivalency attainable?”

The best goals require you to stretch a bit to achieve them but they are not impossible to achieve. Do not set low
hurdles, but be aware of your own limitations and the economic forces around you when you set your goals. You
will not push yourself to achieve a goal you secretly feel is impossible, but neither will you value a success that
comes too easily.

Relevant

To be relevant, your goals need to correspond with the direction you want to move in your work and personal life.
You may have always dreamed of being a professional singer, but working toward that goal does not help you
achieve the promotion you want at work. Identify what is the most important to you, and ensure that your goals
align to those priorities.

Time-based
Like the measurement aspect, having time bound goals is another way to mark off your progress and realize your
success. Without a timeframe, you have no deadlines to motivate you, and the lack of an end date robs you of a
chance to measure your progress and adjust your work as needed to meet the mark.
Obstacles
With all goals, there are obstacles. In order to be successful you should write down obstacles that could prevent you
from meeting a goal. Then write down solutions you can use to overcome these obstacle.

Distance Learning (DL) Program Description

The NEISD Distance Learning Program is a combination of in classroom study (traditional) and at home computer
study (separated from teacher). Students interested in participating in distance learning are required to attend
regularly scheduled registration and orientation sessions.

Program Requirements
A DL student MUST have access to a computer and to the Internet. Computers can be accessed at the Ferrari
Center Computer Lab (see front desk personnel for hours) or San Antonio Public Library.

Students MUST have an email account, know how to access their account, and check email daily. Students must
have basic computer skills such as keyboarding, opening hyperlinks, searching the Web, composing documents in
Word, and attaching a Word document to an email.

DL-only Students

DL-only students are those who do not attend weekly scheduled class at a community site. These classes are also
called “traditional classes.”

TxCHSE students who want DL-only are required to complete 12 hours in a traditional class before joining DL.
This time is required every school year.

ESL students who want DL-only must achieve at least 35 hours in a traditional class before joining DL. This time
is required every school year.

TxCHSE DL-only students must accomplish a MINIMUM of 5 hours per week working in the online program.
Minimum hours vary for ESL students, depending on DL program placement.

Students must have transportation to the Ferrari Center located on Rampart Drive. Students must attend face-to-face
appointments and progress testing.

Attendance in the Distance Learning Class is a very important part of class. Distance Learning is treated like any
other class. Students must set a schedule for regularly working in the program. Attendance is equated with the
amount of hours spent working "on task" in the assigned program.

An inexpensive spiral notebook is required to create a "TxCHSE journal" used when working in the program.
Students will write study notes and questions. Students are required to bring the journal to conferences with the
teacher so it must be kept current.

The Distance Learning week begins on Mondays and ends on the following Sunday at midnight. The DL teachers
closely monitor students’ hours each week. Students who consistently fail to meet the minimum requirements will
be counseled and removed from access to the website.

DL- only students are expected to communicate with assigned teacher on a weekly basis via email. Every Monday,
students are expected to send an email noting their questions, progress, thoughts, or challenges for the week. These
email messages must be professional and short. Professional means proper subject line; greeting (Dear Ms.
Teacher’s name,); complete and grammatically correct sentences; closing (Sincerely, your name). Short means only
2 – 3 sentences. Students who fail to communicate in this manner for a Distance Learning class will be counseled
and/or removed from access to the website.

16

Dual Enrolled Students
Students who are dual enrolled, meaning those who are taking traditional classes and taking online classes, are
required to earn required hours in ALL classes.

Attendance in DL is a very important part of class. Distance Learning is treated like any other class. Students must
set a schedule for regularly working in the program. Attendance is equated with the amount of hours spent working
"on task" in the assigned program.

Dual enrolled TxCHSE students MUST earn a MINIMUM of 3 hours per week working in the online program.
Dual enrolled ESL students’ weekly hours requirement varies, depending on DL program placement. The Distance
Learning week begins on Mondays and ends the following Sunday at midnight. DL teachers closely monitor
students’ hours each week.

Students who consistently fail to meet the minimum requirements will be counseled and removed from access to
the website.

All DL Students
If an emergency arises such as hospitalization of family member, illness, an unexpected business trip out of town,
or computer issues, YOU MUST LET YOUR TEACHER KNOW. Students who fail to communicate in this
manner for a Distance Learning class will be counseled and/or removed from access to the website. If a student
does no work for two weeks and does not communicate, access to the online program will be removed.

After a TxCHSE student completes 40 hours of instruction (traditional class time plus distance learning time) a
progress test is administered. After an ESL student completes 50 hours of instruction (traditional class time plus
distance learning time) a progress test is administered. DL-only students are notified via email to schedule a
progress test. Dual enrolled students are notified by in classroom teacher.

To enroll in ESL Distance Learning send email to: [email protected]

To enroll in TxCHSE Distance Learning send email to: [email protected]

Your email must include in subject line: ESL DL Registration or TxCHSE DL Registration

Your email must include: Your Name (exactly as you registered), and your teacher’s name

You must allow up to 2 business days to receive a return email from the distance learning
teacher. You will receive an attendance agreement, which you must sign and return.
