January 22, after the American Hockey League’s Hershey Bears
scored their first goal of the night, fans celebrated by throwing
stuffed animals onto the ice. Not tens, not hundreds, but 52,341 toys. The
Bears have hosted an annual Teddy Bear Toss since 2001, donating the toys
to local children’s charities. It took crews more than 30 minutes to clear the
ice, a result of what a Bears announcer called “sweet, cuddly mayhem.” RD

Cut 3 pounds skin-on red potatoes
(about 7 medium) into slices 1 inch
thick. Place potatoes in a medium pot
and cover with at least 1 inch of cold
water; season generously with salt (the
water should taste slightly salty), bring
to a simmer, and cook until potatoes
are tender but still holding their shape,
about 15 minutes. Drain and let cool.
While the potatoes are cooking, cut
1 medium red onion into rings, then
toss in a small mixing bowl with 1/4 cup
red wine vinegar. Let stand, stirring
every few minutes, until onion rings
are bright pink, about 20 minutes. Stir
in 1 cup sour cream along with 1/2 cup
drained and chopped sauerkraut, 1/2 cup
minced fresh dill, and 2 tablespoons
whole grain mustard. Season with salt
and pepper. Gently stir the sour cream
dressing and cooled potatoes until slices
are well coated. Season with additional
salt if desired. Serve right away, or re-
