안녕하세요? 아케디아 한인 학부모 여러분!
어김없이 한 학년을 마무리하며 한인 학부모회가 학 부모님들께 다시 인사드릴 수 있게 된 것에 감사드 립니다. 한인 학부모회는 학부모님들의 참여 없이는 지속 될 수 없기에 학부모 회원 한 사람 한 사람이 너무도 소중 합니다. 올해도 새로운 회원들이 많이 참여해 주시어 학 부모회가 활기차게 운영될 수 있었습니다. 적극 참여해 주신 모든 회원님들께 감사드립니다.
다수의 학부모들이 중국계인 아케디아에서 한인은 학 부모 가정이 200여 가구 되는 소수민족입니다. 소수이지 만따뜻한소통의공동체가되어서한인학생들이더욱도 약할 수 있는 기반이 되기를 바라는 마음 간절합니다. 아 케디아 고등학교는 올해도 수십 명의 학생들이 명문 대학 에 진학하는 결과를 내어 공립 고등학교로서는 최고의 고 등학교로 인정받는 학교입니다. 한인 학생들도 열심히 하 여 유수대학에 많이 진학하게 되었습니다. 그동안 애쓴 우리 아이들을 많이 격려해 주시고 칭찬해 주십시오.
부모의 관심 없이는 자녀가 좋은 대학에 입학하고 미국 사회에 튼튼히 뿌리내리는 것이 쉽지 않은 것이 현실입니 다.한인부모님들도학교또는이런공적인모임에관심 을 갖고 활동함으로써 변화하는 사회에 맞춰 자녀를 적극 적으로 지원하시면 좋겠습니다.
아케디아한인학부모회는두달에한번정기모임을 갖고 학교소식, 학업과 교내외 활동 정보등을 교류하고 친 목을 다집니다. 그리고 여러 세미나를 회원의 요구에 따 라 개최하기도 합니다. 학부모님들은 누구나 정기모임이 나세미나에참석하실수있으며좀더적극적으로는모 임을 꾸리는 자원봉사를 하실 수 있습니다. 또한 일년에 한 번 AKPA Magazine을 출간하면서 많은 업체들로 부 터 광고 후원을 받습니다. 이렇게 모인 후원업체의 광고

한국어 교육 이렇게
한국인의 힘을 키우는 한국어 교육
한국학교에서 학생들을 가르친 햇수가 거의 10년이 되어 간다. 아케디아에서 한국어를 가르치기 시작했을 때 미 국에서 태어나서 유창하게 한국어를 구사하는 학생들이 무척 인상적이었다. 한국인이 많은 곳에 살다보니 아이들도 한국 사람들을 만날 기회가 많고, 한국말을 듣고 말할 기회가 많아 서라는 걸 알게 되었다. 요즘은 미디어의 발달로 한국 문화를 접하기가 어느 때보다 수월해져서 한국어를 배우기에 더없이 좋은 환경이다.
1.5~2세 부모도 한국어 교육 동참
한국어를 가르치는 부모들은 자녀들이 한국인으로서 뿌리를 내리고 살아가기를 소망하며 교육에 동참한다. 요즘 한국어 교육의 흐름은 한국어에 능숙하지 않은 부모도 자녀를 한국학 교에 보내는 경우가 늘고 있다는 것이다. 1.5세나 2세인 부모 들 중에서 “한국어를 제대로 배우지 않은 것이 후회된다”며 자 녀들은 꼭 한국말을 잘하기를 바란다는 사람들이 꽤 있다. 그 들이어렸을때는한국어보다영어를배우는것이더중요한 과제였고, 한국어를 배웠어도 그것을 가정 밖에서 사용할 기 회가적었다고한다.그래서어느순간학습이정체되고,한국 어를잊게된것이다.
한국문화 열기가 한국어 교육으로 이어져
하지만 시대가 바뀌어도 참 많이 바뀌었다. 요즘은 외국인을 만나도 한국에 대해 이야기할 기회가 많다. 그들은 나보다 더 자세히한국대중문화계소식을전하고,한국음식맛에감 동한다. 내가 한국학교 교사임을 밝히면 한국어를 배우는 학 생들이 두 가지 언어를 구사할 수 있음에 부러움을 표하기까 지 한다.
한국문화에 관심이 없던 한국인 학생들도 외국인 친구들과 어울려 한국 드라마를 보고 한국 가요를 들으면서 한국에 관심 을 두기 시작한다. 그와 동시에 한국어를 배우려는 욕구가 생 겨나는 것을 자주 목격한다.
자신의 정체성을 찾아가는 과정은 인간이 완성되어 가는 길 이다. 미국에서 태어나고 자란 우리 자녀에게 한국인의 뿌리 를 찾게 하는 첫번째 길은 모국어를 가르치는 것이다. 어려서 배우지 못한 한국어를 대학에서 뒤늦게 배우고, 한국에 언어 연수까지 다녀왔다는 학생들 이야기가 종종 들린다. 부모들은 자녀가 한국말을 열심히 배우는 것이 대견하고, 가족 간의 유 대도 더 돈독해졌다고 전한다.

한국어 실력은 실용적인 혜택 많아
한국어 구사 능력은 대학 입학이나 장학금 혜택에도 도움이 된 다.SAT한국어과목은외국어가운데네번째로많은학생이 치르는 과목으로 자리잡았고, 한국학교에서 7~8년간 공부한 학생들은 고득점을 받아 대입에 활용하고 있다. 한국 정부에 서 주관하는 한국어 능력시험 (Test of Proficiency in Korean) 은 정부기관이나 공공단체가 수여하는 장학금 신청, 한국 유 학 및 취업에 폭넓게 활용된다.
얼마 전 아는 분이 자신의 딸이 한국어 실력 덕분에 직장에 서 좋은 대우를 받고 있다고 알려왔다. 한국과 거래를 시작한 회사에서딸이통역을전담하며큰기여를한다고했다.그딸 이 아케디아 한국학교 출신이어서 더욱 흐뭇했다.
배움의 열망이 넘치는 곳
어머니의 손을 잡고 유치반에 들어온 어린이들이 한글 자모를 배우는 모습은 참 기특하다. 이 학생들이 6학년을 마칠 때쯤이 면 제법 자연스럽게 한국말을 구사한다. 어른들에게 인사도 잘하고높임말도제대로한다.추석때는송편을빚어먹고,설 에는세배를하고민속놀이를하며한국의문화도배운다.뿌 리 교육 프로그램을 통해 사물놀이, 동양화 그리기도 배워 신 이 난다. 한국의 위인들 이야기를 읽고 한국의 역사를 배운다. 중고생들은 여름방학 때 청소년 모국방문 연수를 가서 한국의 문화를 현장에서 체험한다. 그리고 아시아의 동북쪽에 있는 한반도가 자신들의 조국임을 인식한다. 우리가 자녀에게 해 줄수있는가장좋은선물은바로우리의말을가르치는일이
다.

미국 대학 입시의 첫번째 관문: GPA의 중요성
미국 대학 입시에 가장 중요한 요소가 GPA 라는 것은 누구도 부인하지 않는 불변의 사실이고 현실이다. 대학 입시에서 가장 중요함 에도 불구 하고 어떻게 성적이 평가되는지에 대 해서는 잘 알지 못하는 일반적인 실수로 인하여 학생들은 오히려 입시에 불이익이 되는 결정을 내리기도 한다. 사실 학생이 내리는 결정이라기 보다는 부모들의 입김으로 인한 잘못된 결정을 선택하게 되기도 한다. 아케디아의 학부모들을 위하여 중요한 성적표가 어떻게 평가되는 지에 대해 알아보도록 하겠다.
성적증명서는 4년에 걸친 성적으로 구성되어
수치로 보이지만 각 대학마다 입시사정 반영 범
위가 다르다. 스탠포드 등은 10~12학년의 성적
을, USC등은 9~11학년의 성적을 주로 반영한다.
거의 대부분 12학년 1학기까지 성적을 요구한다. UC계열은 10~11학년 동안 들었던 모든 “a-g”(UC계열의 15가지 필수 과 목 목록) 과목들에 기반한 성적들을 평가하지만 Honors, AP, IB과목들의 이수 여부도 함께 분석한다. 여기에서 한 가지 기 억할것은위의언급한바,9학년의성적,혹은12학년의성적 은안본다고하지만고교4년에걸친학과목선정을통해얼마 나 어려운 과목들을 택했는지를 고려하며 전체적인 면을 읽는 다는 점이다. 특히 UC의 경우 해마다 증가하는 지원자들을 추 려낼수밖에없는심사과정을거치기위해12학년에 눈에띄 는 하락점이 보이는 지원자가 있다면 불리한 결정이 내려질 수 밖에 없음을 부인하지 않는다.
해 나가는 모습을 보여주는 학생이다. 일반수업만 이수한 학 생은도전의식이없거나발전가능성이없다는인상을주게 되는 것이다.
다시 말해 GPA는 다른 정보와는 상관없는 그저 숫자가 보 여주는 고정된 점수가 아니다. 입학사정관의 GPA 계산법은 고등학교 성적표의 GPA와 다를 수 있다.
Weighted GPA란 상급반 수업에 추가 점수를 주어 재계산 된것이며각고등학교마다다른방식을취한다.한예로어떤 학교는 AP수업의 실제 성적에 추가점수를 부여하기도 한다. (AP의 학점은 보통 Honors보다 가치가 크다.) 이러한 차이점 때문에 각 대학들은 GPA를 재 계산하는데 역시 세부적인 내 용은 공개하지 않는다. 중요한 것은 어떤 계산법을 사용하든 “strength of curriculum”을 측정하는 것이 목적이라는 것이다. 즉, 대학들은 고등학교에서 들을 수 있는 가장 어려운 과목들 을 이수한 학생들을 선별하기 원한다는 것이다.
GPA 적용법 또한 과목마다 틀리다. 대학들은 수학, 영어, 사
회학,과학,외국어등핵심과목에더많은점수를부여하므로
AP US History의 A와 Ceramics의 A는 차이가 크다. 또한 가능
한 한 4년 수업 코스를 (예: Spanish 1~4) 완료하는 것이 중요
하며그렇지않을경우입학사정관의의문을자아낼수있다. 그러나여기에서주의해야할함정이있다.무조건많은AP
또한 일반 US History의 A는 AP 레벨의 A는 커녕 B학점보 다도 낮을 수 있다. 상위 사립대는GPA를 단순한 숫자로 보기 보다는 성적표를 통해 학생의 학과목 선택법과 개성을 읽는 다. 가장 매력적인 학생은 학교에서 제공하는 어려운 과목들 을선택하여지적호기심을보여주고가장이상적인학생은 그런어려운스케줄에도불구하고좋은성적을유지하며발전
를 듣는 것만이 능사가 아니라는 것이다. 무리하여 소화도 못 시킬만큼의AP를듣고제대로된성적을못내는것보다는적 절하게 학생의 능력을 조절하고 안배하는 운영의 묘미가 필요 하다. 꼭 필요한 과목의 AP를 가려내고 (만들어 내고자 하는 학생의 포트폴리오에 따라 학생마다 더 필요하고, 덜 필요한 과목이모두다를수밖에없음을기억하자)학업과활동의시

간 안배를 하는 것이 무엇보다 중요하다.
스탠포드 대학은 “상급반 수업을 학교에서 이수할 수 있다
면 이러한 과목들을 선택하는 학생들의 도전적인 면을 보기를 원합니다.” 라고 분명히 발표하였다. 여기서 주목할 점은, “학 교에서이러한정규외의수업을이수할수있다면”이다.학생 들에게 주어진 기회들을 잘 활용하느냐는 것이 중요한 것이지 만일 많은 AP 수업을 학교에서 제공하지 않는다면 걱정할 것 이 없게 된다. 이 사실 하나로 입학 사정에 어떤 해가 되는 것 은 아니기 때문이다.
하지만 대학들은 자신의 길을 직접 만드는 학생들에게 깊은 인상을 받는다. 배우고 싶은 과목이 학교에 없다면 근처 대학 에서수업을듣는것도생각해보아라.진정한열정을보여주 는데큰도움이된다.실제로UPenn대학관계자에따르면,“ 학생들이 이수한 과목의 종류, 수준과 학점, 특히 학생들의 관 심분야와 관련된 과목들인지에 더 많이 심혈을 기울인다.” 라 고 말했다. 예를 들어 국제관계학 전공 지원자는 제3외국어를, 공과계열 전공 지원자는 대학 수준 과학 과목을 근처 대학에서 이수할 수 있다.
참고로,GPA계산법이다틀리듯 학점인정방침역시대학 마다차이가있다는것을알아야한다.예로UPenn은정규대 학에서 이수한 정규수업은 모두 인정해 준다. 이 부분도 학교 마다 다르니 세부 사항을 미리 확인하자.
특별활동이 학생의 열정을 보여주듯 성적표는 학구적인 특 색을 보여준다. 거듭 강조하지만 성적표(GPA)가 대학 입시에 서는 가장 중요한 요소가 된다. 높은 SAT점수도, 혹은 특출난 특별활동도 부진한 GPA나 부실한 과목 내역을 보완하지 못한 다. 간단히 말해 고등학교에서 열심히 공부한 학생이 대학에 서도 열심히 공부한다. 대학은 그것을 너무도 잘 알고 있으며 대학이 찾는 학생의 기본 조건이 되는 것이다.

What I wish I'd known in school
학교에서 배웠더라면 좋았을텐데...
1. The most popular and highest achieving kids in school are NOT always the most success- ful in the real world. Success in the academic bub- ble does not necessarily translate to success in work and real life. While you're in school, take heart and stay focused because slow and steady wins the race.
2. Just because you're not part of the "cool
crowd" doesn't mean you're not cool or unique.
I remember one time just before Christmas break,
I was walking out of a chemistry exam and a guy
in my class who rarely spoke to me came up and
said, "It must be wonderful to be like you and not
get nervous about big tests like this." I looked at him
and laughed. I said, "What the heck are you talking
about? I'm a wreck just like everyone else." It just
goes to show you that not only is perception in the
eye of the beholder, but it's also not always on target.
The reason I seemed composed going into exams
was that I developed a "leapfrog focus" (i.e. "When the exam is over, I'm going to see a movie/have hot chocolate/etc.”), but that didn't mean I wasn't a nervous wreck. I'm amused at how we can all look at each other and think something is true when it isn't. Everyone has feelings, insecurities, ambitions, and dreams that aren't apparent on the surface.
3. The smartest, most interesting, and most creative people usually aren't the most socially comfortable or interested. It's the least popular, most focused kids who be- come the most influential and successful. They're the ones thinking day in and day out about the big things they're going to do with their lives. So if you're one of them, don't worry. And if you're not, don't be mean to them. You never know who's going to be signing your paycheck or be in a position to help you down the line. As they say, nerds rule.
4. Being different is actually good. In the adolescent and post-adolescent years, there's a lot of pressure to conform to the group, agree to their rules, and dress, talk, and behave a certain way. It's a matter of belonging. However, even though there's a lot of pressure to fit in and be like everyone else, you can get to the point where you lose sight of who you are at a time when you're supposed to be discovering yourself. There- fore, being like everyone else is in direct conflict with what you really need.

5. Pursue what you love regardless of what people say.
You have to remember that people in school are painfully limited in their perspective on the world. Whatever it is that you're really into, that you want to stay up late reading about, or you're thinking about when you should be focusing on a lecture or studying may be the key to what you build your life and career around. Don't ignore your passion. It doesn't mat- ter if anybody else thinks it's stupid - it's your passion.
6. Extracurricular activities and internships are some- times more important than academics. Interacting with the outside world gives you invaluable experiences. The more you interact with adults, businesses, community groups and execs, the more comfortable you'll be networking with them when you need a loan, a job, advice on your career, admission to grad school, etc. Get outside the bubble of school and build a network.
7. Courses and majors in school do not necessarily cor- relate to opportunities in the real world. I laugh at some of the majors colleges have, such as "Women's Studies" or "Com- munication Studies." What the heck are you going to do with those?! Some of these degrees simply aren't pragmatic in the real world.
8. Teachers and professors are not the enemy. Consider them as mentors and friends. Talk to them often for advice


and counsel. Ask them for extra help, perspective, or just to go over something again. When I was a professor, I really ap- preciated the students who came around and wanted to learn more.
9. Your parents and family usually have your best in- terests at heart. They may not always understand why you do some of the things you do, but give them the benefit of the doubt. Don't make life harder on your folks. The better your relationship is with your parents, the easier life is going to be. Period. You need family.
10. Life is complicated - get used to it. Consider all the frustrations you're going through now as training for the re- ally big stuff later. Learn to deal with conflict, confusion, chal- lenges, and tackling things you don't like or understand in school because adulthood is a much more dangerous atmo- sphere. Develop the coping skills you'll need for the rest of your life. The biggest war is not with your teachers or your parents, but the one you have with yourself over who and what you're going to be and what you'll stand for.
1. 학교에서 가장 인기있고, 우수한 학생들이 항상 사회에서도 가장 성공하는 사람이 되는 것은 아닙니다. 학교에서의 성공이 직 장이나 사회에서 성공을 보장하는 것은 아닙니다. 학생 때 자신 이 무엇을 좋아하는지 알고, 온 마음을 다하여 꾸준히 하는 것이 성공의 열쇠입니다. 왜냐하면, 인생의 레이스에서는 천천히 그리 고 꾸준한 자가 승리하기 때문입니다.
2.단지“잘나가는무리”중한명이아니라는것이여러분이매 력 없다거나 특별하지 않다고 생각하는 것은 잘못된 생각입니다. 어느 겨울 화학시험을 보고 나오는데, 교실에서 거의 대화를 나누 지 않았던 남학생이 다가와 하는 말이, “넌 정말 대단하구나... 이 런큰시험을보면서떨지않다니말야!”난그아이를보며웃음을 터트렸습니다. 왜냐하면 나도 다른 학생들처럼 완전히 긴장했기 때문이죠. 사람들은 본질이 아니라 시야에 들어오는 대로 인식하 기 쉽습니다. 내가 시험보러 들어가면서 침착하게 보인 이유는 내가 터득한 “leapfrog focus” 방법 덕분이지요. 예를 들어, ‘시험이 끝나면 영화 보러 가야지’ 아니면 ‘따뜻한 코코아 한 잔 마셔야지’ 하고 생각하면서 긴장 상황을 건너 뛰는 거죠. 난 우리들이 서로 를보면서사실이아닌것을사실로생각한다는것에너무놀랐습 니다. 누구나 감정, 불안감, 야망 그리고 꿈을 갖고 있습니다. 하 지만그것은겉으로는알수없는것이라는것을잊고있는거죠.
3. 가장 똑똑하며, 호기심 많고, 창의적인 사람들은 대체로 관 계를 맺는데 있어서는 편안하고 재미있는 사람들은 아닙니다. 미 래에 성공하고 영향력이 있는 사람이 될 가능성이 높은 주목받는 아이들 중 인기있는 아이들은 드뭅니다. 이런 아이들이 생각하는 것은 자신이 평생 해나갈 큰 일에 관한 것입니다. 만약 여러분이 그들중한명이라면걱정할것없고,그렇지않다면그들한테짖 궂게하지말아야할것입니다.앞으로누가나의월급을주는사 람이 될지 또는 나를 도와줄 지위에 있게 될지 모르니까요. 누군

후에 아이들은 친한 그룹의 멤버로 인정받는 일에 굉장히 노력합 니다. 규칙에 따르고, 옷차림, 언어, 행동방식 등도 따라합니다. 이것은 소속감의 문제라고 할 수 있는데, 그룹에서 인정받으려 하 는 것이나 다른 아이들처럼 되고 싶어 하는 이 시기가 사실은 내 가 내 자신을 알아가는 중요한 시기라는 것입니다. 자신이 누구 인지 알아가지 못하고 다른 이들처럼 되려는 것은 생각의 촛점을 잘못 두는 것입니다.
5. 사람들이 뭐라고 하더라도 좋아하는 일을 하십시오. 명심할 것은 학교에서 만난 사람들은 사실 세상에 대한 제한적인 인식 즉, 편견을 가지고 있다는 것입니다. 여러분이 좋아하는 것이 무 엇이든지-책을밤늦게까지읽고싶다는지,또는어떤것을배우 거나강의들을때집중한다고생각되는것-여러분의삶을가꾸 어 나갈 열쇠가 될 것입니다. 여러분의 열정을 무시하지 마십시 오. 다른 이가 “멍청한 일”이라고 생각하든 말든 그건 중요치 않습 니다. 그것은 여러분의 열정입니다.
6. 과외활동과 인턴십은 때때로 학업보다 중요합니다. 바깥세 상과 교류하는 것은 가치로 환산할 수 없는 경험을 줍니다. 다른 어른들, 사업체, 커뮤니티 그룹, 중역 등을 많이 알아둘수록 대학 진학상담,취업상담,대출신청등에서더욱쉽게문제를풀어갈 수 있습니다. 바깥세상에 나가 많은 교류로 친분을 쌓으십시오.
7.어떤전공과수강과목들은현실세계와연결되지않을수있 습니다. “여성학”, “언론학” 같은 전공을 가르치는 대학은 도대체 무엇을 하는 것인지 의문입니다. 이러한 몇몇 학위들은 현실에서 실용적이지 않습니다.
8. 선생님과 교수님들은 적이 아닙니다. 멘토나 친구로 생각하 세요. 자주 조언을 구하고 의논을 하십시오. 내가 교수였을 때에 도 자주 찾아와 조금이라도 더 배우려 하던 학생들이 정말 감사 했습니다.
9. 부모님과 가족들은 마음으로부터 여러분을 응원합니다. 가 족들도 때론 여러분이 하는 것을 이해하지 못할 수도 있습니다 만, 가족들이 신뢰할 수 있도록 하십시오. 부모님과의 관계가 좋 을수록, 인생은 즐겁게 됩니다. 그 이상은 없습니다. 여러분은 가 족이 필요합니다.
10.인생은 복잡합니다. 적응하세요. 지금 겪고있는 좌절을 훗 날 겪게 될 역경에 대한 훈련이라고 생각하십시오. 갈등, 혼돈, 역경에 대처하는 법을 배우십시오. 어른들의 세상은 더욱 위험 한 환경이기 때문입니다. 평생 이런 상황에 맞서야 하니 대응 능 력을 키우십시오. 큰 씨름은 선생님이나 부모와 하는 것이 아니 라 본인 자신과 하는 것입니다. 앞으로 무엇을 해야할지 무엇으 로 우뚝 설지....

한국방문 체험기

Last summer I had the privilege of attending the Global Youth Korean Network program in Seoul, Korea. This trip exposed me to various new settings, some in the vast and dense streets of the bustling Myeongdong or in the mountains of Andong. This new experience helped expand my perspec-
tive of my global identity and my Hundreds of teenagers from
heritage as a Korean.
around the world all traveled to
Seoul one hot summer day and
congregated in the Olympic
Hotel. Aftfter orientation, we
had various bonding experi-
ences and interacted with one
another. Participants from
Russia, Chroatia, China, Ja-
pan, Canada, and various
other countries arrived.
Some barriers arose as we didn’t speak a
universal language, and many of us had to speak through our broken Korean.
After dividing into groups, I met peers from Rome, Guate- mala, Guam, China, and Minnesota. We spoke of our home- towns and what it was like in our respective countries, and after, we left for Andong in buses.
In Andong, we met native Korean speakers who showed us their schools and we were given the opportunity to stay at their homes. We spoke with their parents and discussed the culture in Korea and their lifestyles. I was surprised to discov- er that the students stayed at school until late in the afternoon and returned at night. Thus, they had very limited time with their families, and spent most of their time awake studying.
I found this to be incomprehensible and peculiar. A Junior from the best mathematics and science school in Andong was taking a mathematics course that many students from my school had taken in the 9th grade. To me, it seemed that the level of math that they were taking was incongruous with the time they spent at school learning.
After visiting their schools and homes, we all decided to meet at a Karaoke place in downtown Andong. We sang and drank beverages together and discussed our time there. The Andong students wrote letters to our supervisors and we left, saddened by the thought that this would be our last day there.
The next day we said our goodbyes as we boarded our buses. Many people were crying, as they lamented the fact that we would probably never see each other again. ThThey promised to write and to connect over Facebook, which we
We bonded over the week and played games or told stories. We stayed up late, all 14 of us crammed in one hotel room. We sang songs on the bus and slept on each other’s shoulders. We made countless friendships and met so many unique people.
So on the morning that we all departed, everyone was in a small auditorium crying. We were giving each other our contact information and my friends were sobbing over the fact that the week was over. For many of us, this was our first time in a new country. This program was the most entertain- ing and thought provoking experience of my life. I was thrust into a land in which the language was unknown, the cities unfamiliar, and the people unique. I experienced novelty in the rawest form, and was struck with friendships and experi- ences that would provide a permanent memory of one of the best weeks of my life.

After we got back to Seoul, we walked around Myeongdong and visited the hundreds of shops and street vendors there. We shopped, ate, and awed over the winding passageways and hundreds of people. Many of us had never seen anything like this, as we were raised in small cities.

Bugs the size of my toenails. Humidity that sucks away the soul with every step. Walk- ing for miles and miles through the scorching sun, subway and sidewalks.
For six days and five nights, I participated in the Overseas Koreans Foundation and Kyung Hee University’s 2012 Global Korean Youth Network Program (GYKNP) in Seoul. I was able to experience traditional Korean cuisine, folklore, handcrafts, farming, food, and culture during the hottest period of Ko-
rea—right when Psy’s Gangnam
Style was just starting and the
rain was ceasing to welcome
the blazing sun. Even with
the suffocating weather style,
everything was improved by
the delicious corn makgulli
(Korean traditional rice
wine) and the overdose of
K-pop on every street cor-
ner, store, and channel on television.
Aside from the fifierce weather, what made the program
so memorable was the 350 other foreign and native students who participated in GKYNP. I was able to bond with people from all over the world (ex: Canada, China, Japan, Russia, Kazakhstan, and Korea itself). The students of Kyunghee University accompanied us through bonding activities, cultural performances, city missions/tours, a professional Korean baseball game, museums, and forums by becoming our Russian, English, Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, and Korean translators and team leaders. We were split up into 30 teams of about 10 to 12 students in each group. In these teams, we connected very closely even with our very poor skills in the Korean language.
Our days were packed as we ventured through Seoul from the city to the countryside. In the city, companies like Olleh educated us about new technology that was transforming the world in terms of smart phones. Walking along the Han River was a spectacular experience that taught us how nature and technology could coexist together. In the countryside, we learned how to make traditional pancakes and worked as a team to complete various tasks, such as making traditional egg baskets and necklace charms. The sweet mothers in the countryside would cook us delicious meals and teach us how to make their very own special kimchi recipes.
Singing old-fAHSioned Korean trot songs in the country- side (because the karaoke machine was so outdated). Shar- ing late night stories about back home. Watching the Summer Olympic games on the television in the hotel. Scouting out
bat caves and cornfields. Eating all the different types of Korean ice cream in the blazing sun. Thread- ing through the busy streets of Myeong-dong. Eating Korean shaved ice. Eating not so very pleasant take out from Outback Steakhouse during a live baseball game. Throwing water fights in the refreshing lakes.
I can’t explicitly write down ev- ery little moment that went on in Korea. However, the impression Korea and the program has left me is positive and significantly pro- found. It’s not only because I was able to learn more about my ances-
tor’s culture, but also because I know the memories I created with my new friends
will be irreplaceable.
Those who have already gone to Korea
many times will still have an experience that is unique from their previous adventures in Korea. Why? Mainly because of the people. No where else will you be able to bond with such a variety of people from all over the world who have one thing in common with you: their admiration and
growing interest in Korea and it’s culture.

목적
미 합중국 교육이념에 바탕을 두고 교육행정의 차이점 및 이질문화 때문에 참여의식의 부족으로 본의 아니게 방치되어 왔던 Korean Community의 지위를 향상시키고 자녀들의 교육 지원 및 교내에서 부당한사례가생기지않게끔사전에협의협력하여교육구및지역 학교행사에 적극 참여한다. 또한 이 지역 부모들의 여론을 집약 실천함으로써 우리 자녀들에게 자랑스러운 한국인의 뿌리를 깊게 심어주고 이중문화를 완전 소화흡수한 Korean American 으로서 성장을 계속하여 미국은 물론 전 세계적으로 크게 봉사하는 시민 양성을 목적으로 한다.

미국내 타주에서 전입을 하거나 한국에서 오는 학생의 경우에 다음과 같 은 준비와 절차를 밟아야 합니다.
1. 234 Campus Dr. Arcadia CA 91007에 위치한 District Office를 방문하여
등록에 필요한 서류 Package를 받아야 합니다.
2. Package를 정확하게 작성한 후, 아래에 제시되어 있는 서류들을 빠짐
없이 준비하여 (626) 821-6613로 전화하여 등록 담당자와의 미팅을 예 약합니다.
1) Residency Verifications: 거주 증명을 위한 것으로 원본이어야 하며,
한 달 이내의 것이어야 합니다.

- Current Auto Registration/ Car Insurance Statement/ Health

2) Age Verification: 나이 증명을 위한 것으로 이 중에서 한 가지만 준비 합니다.

3) Immunization Records: 예방 접종 확인을 위한 것으로 TB(투베르 클린 반응)이 꼭 포함되어 있어야 합니다.

4) Transcript: High School 등록하는 학생에 한함 3.이상의모든서류를갖춰담당자와미팅을거쳐학교와학년그리고학
생의 고유번호를 배정 받게 됩니다. 이후 해당 학교 office에 가서 서 류를 내는 것으로 등록 절차가 끝나게 됩니다. 한 가지 유의할 점은 Elementary school의 경우, 학교에 다니면서 ELD테스트를 보게 되지만 Middle school과 High school의 경우엔 학교에 다니기 전에 ELD 날짜를 학교에서따로정해서보기때문에ELD시험결과가나온다음수업시 간표를 받고 학교에 다니게 됩니다. 또한 수업 스케쥴도 담당 카운슬러 가 정해 주기 때문에 ELD시험 결과가 나온 후에 담당 카운셀러와 미팅 예약을 꼭 해야 합니다.
*거주증명을위한서류가준비되지않을경우엔공증을받아야하며,공 증에 관한 안내는 School District에서 받는 package에 첨부되어 있습니 다.
