PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Jeff LaPorta
ASBO MD&DC
Sixty-five times we ASBO MD&DC members have gathered together at our
Spring Conference to advance our knowledge, reconnect with colleagues,
meet suppliers and celebrate our collective accomplishments.
As has been throughout the year, our theme at the conference is Mentorship. If you recall,
our Fall Conference offered Mentees free registrations so those individuals who have never
experienced an ASBO MD&DC Conference could realize the benefits provided. Some of
those Mentors who sponsored the Mentees have received complimentary conference
registrations as reward for their actions. Mentors, without them it would be very difficult for
the conference organizers to assemble the first-class program they have. The value our
veteran leaders deliver to us in the form of guidance and mentorship is invaluable to those
of us who attempt to create conference program content equal to the level of excellence they
have established. I am confident that we have succeeded in that task. As a demonstration of
Mentorship in action, our student presentation this year will feature Ms. Amy Wells and Ms.
Kaitlyn Trexler describing their work with Best Buddies of Maryland. Their work with Best
Buddies in their school pairs students as one-to-one mentors with special needs students in
an effort to assist those with developmental disabilities with integration in the school.
This year’s conference has an Emerging Leaders event, optional extended time class
sessions, a sold-out exhibitor floor, a conference app, great hotel choices and many other
exciting aspects. It also features our Keynote Speaker, Ms. Michelle Prince, who will be
speaking to us Tuesday morning. Michelle is an award-winning speaker who will educate us
on how to get more done in less time, and not only in our work lives, but our personal lives
as well. Along with that, our Wednesday morning speaker will coach us in personal finance.
We all spend so much time managing our organization’s finances that too often we ignore
our own. Our speaker will explain how to plan for retirement, college savings, investing and
more.
This conference could not happen without the conscientious, extra effort of our committee
volunteers. They apply countless hours to ensure all of you have the best conference
experience possible. They are truly the soul of our organization and the reason for our
success. They are also the reason why ASBO MD&DC has exciting offerings such as;
The Allen Gaddis Leadership Academy
Ken Nickoles Emerging Leader Award
Dwight Jacobus Scholarships
Paul B. Bell Award
Fay Miller Education Leadership Award
Foundation Courses
B.I.G. Forums
And so many more offerings.
So, while you are here, meet new people, connect with colleagues, explore new solutions
with suppliers, learn new best practice ideas, reignite your passion for your profession, learn
about ASBO MD&DC, consider mentoring a co-worker and most of all, Enjoy the
Conference!

KEYNOTE - Michelle Prince
Best-Selling Author
Zig Ziglar Motivational Speaker & Self-Publishing
Expert
Michelle Prince is a passionate, dynamic
speaker who captivates audiences with her
authenticity, high energy and natural
ability to connect with any audience.
Michelle mixes enthusiasm, passion and
humor with motivational stories to inspire
others to start “Winning In Life”…and to
do it NOW!
Michelle Prince is the best-selling author of
her first book, “Winning In Life Now.” She
has gone on to author dozens of additional
books and products in the areas of
achievement, motivation, productivity and
success. She owns her own publishing
company and is the founder of the “Book
Bound Workshop” which helps soon-to-be
authors get their story “out of their head
and onto paper.” Michelle knows we all have a story and is passionate about helping
others tell their stories so they can impact other people’s lives.
Michelle began her sales career working for Zig Ziglar right out of college. With her
solid foundation in personal growth, productivity and leadership, Michelle was able
to achieve extraordinary results and numerous awards, making her an in-demand
sales and marketing professional. She decided to take that knowledge and start her
own company to fulfill her passion of motivating, inspiring and encouraging others
to live phenomenal lives. She does this through her speaking, coaching and training.
Her life came full circle when she was asked to become a Ziglar Motivational Speaker
representing the values and company that ignited her passion and kick-started her
career back in her twenties. Michelle is even more committed to carrying on the
legacy of the late Zig Ziglar than ever before.
Michelle has been referred to as “America’s Productivity Coach,” because she has
learned the secret to overcoming procrastination and living a happier, more
abundant life. She is on a mission to show audiences worldwide that they too can
stop juggling, overcome procrastination, and get more done in less time in business,
leadership and life so they can make a difference in the world!
STUDENT SHOWCASE
Best Buddies®
Best Buddies® is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to establishing a global
volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated
employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and
developmental disabilities. Founded in 1989 by Anthony K. Shriver, Best Buddies is a
vibrant organization that has grown from one original chapter to more than 1,900
middle school, high school, and college chapters worldwide. Today, Best Buddies’
eight formal programs — Middle Schools, High Schools, Colleges, Citizens, e-
Buddies®, Jobs, Ambassadors, and Promoters — engage participants in each of the 50
states and in over 50 countries, positively impacting the lives of more than 900,000
people with and without disabilities around the world. In many cases, as a result of
their involvement with Best Buddies, people with intellectual and developmental
disabilities secure rewarding jobs, live on their own, become inspirational leaders, and
make lifelong friendships.
Over 2,300 student leaders, volunteers, and staff members from Best Buddies
International’s programs around the world participated in the 27th Annual Best
Buddies International Leadership Conference: ALL FOR BEST BUDDIES presented
by the A&E Network, July 22-25 at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. The
weekend offered attendees new ideas to share with their chapters back home,
networking opportunities, and most importantly: lasting friendships.
Fallston High School’s Best Buddies chapter brought home top honors from the 27th
Annual Best Buddies Leadership Conference, with the title of International High
School of the Year. Fallston’s Best Buddies chapter is the largest extracurricular club
in the school, with 145 members. Fifteen of those members are students with special
needs who spend time with their buddies during the school day as well as outside of
school and during the summer. Fifteen chapter members are matched on a one-on-
one basis with the members with special needs, and the rest of the chapter members
support those relationships. The Fallston chapter serves students with intellectual,
development and physical disabilities.
The Fallston High chapter, founded in 2000, sent six members to this year’s
conference at Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind., including the chapter
president, vice president, associate director, secretary, historian and Best Buddies
ambassador. Fallston’s chapter was previously named Maryland’s Chapter of the Year
in April. Chapters of the year were also recognized at the middle school and college
level. Fallston High was the only school from Maryland that received the honor
