Dear EBSC Family,

We’ve come a long way over the past four decades. Since our founding in
1982 by refugees, community organizers, and congregations speaking out
to protect people fleeing Central American civil wars, East Bay Sanctuary
Covenant has grown into one of the largest affirmative asylum and
immigrant support programs in the country, reaching 10,000+ people yearly.

This is the covenant of Sanctuary - a commitment to our community to
protect, advocate, and transform the lives of low-income immigrants and
asylum seekers as we speak truth to power and defend immigrant rights.

With your help, EBSC:
• Provides free or low cost legal help for over 10,000 people through

our multilingual hotline, phone appointments, and outreach
• Has won over 4,000 asylum cases with a 97.7% success rate
• Fights for a permanent path to residency for over 2.1 million

holders of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and Deferred Action for
Childhood Arrivals (DACA)
• Protects asylum law through lawsuits & organizing campaigns
• Offers arts-based workshops and educational exhibits through our
Amplifying Sanctuary Voices Oral History Project, including our
most recent Climate Migration exhibit on display at UC Berkeley
• Has expanded our Trauma-Informed Support Services, with vaccine,
mental health, housing, and health support for vulnerable immigrants
• Collaborates with Radio B’alam - Mayan Voices Radio Station to
produce a weekly internet radio program reaching the Mam-speaking
community with information on health, housing, and immigration topics
• Created a monthly Support Group for Maya Mam Indigenous
Guatemalan Women, using art as a tool for healing & leadership

Your role in this work is essential.Your support, ideas, and presence in the
Sanctuary Movement are vital as we move into the next forty years of
immigrant justice work.We are excited to celebrate with you!

Together, We Are Sanctuary - ¡Somos Santuario!

“Being from the Maya Mam Indigenous community in Guatemala, back
in the 1990s, my family had to flee to survive civil war and genocide.
I was only three years old when I came to the U.S. with my dad, mom,

and two sisters.Thankfully, EBSC helped us apply for asylum.

I grew up in Oakland, and as a child, I remember my dad telling other
Indigenous Guatemalans about Santuario. By age 9, I was taking the

bus to EBSC with older Maya Mam women and interpreting for their
asylum interviews.

Today, I work at EBSC as a paralegal and Mam interpreter, and have
also been leading a support group for Maya Mam women, helping them

to access services and find their voice. We have even started a new
weekly radio program for Mam speakers in the Bay Area!

It’s no surprise that I ended up at EBSC - my sisters are also working
in the field of immigration legal services because we know firsthand
what this help means to immigrant families. Thank you for being part

of this movement with us— Together,We Are Sanctuary!”

In honor of Esmeralda Mendoza and all the refugee advocates who
embody the spirit of Sanctuary – You are the heart of Santuario!

HAITI ACTION COMMITTEE
HAITI EMERGENCY RELIEF FUND/HERF

Congratulations to East Bay Sanctuary Covenant for 40 years of
service to the migrant and refugee communities, and to the community
organizers and faith congregations who sparked the US sanctuary
movement and founded EBSC.Also,Thank You to all who have donated

to Haiti Emergency Relief Fund.
— Since the 2004 coup against democratically elected president Jean-

Bertrand Aristide, US-backed regimes have been placed and maintained
in power through stolen elections and death squad terror, marked by
government corruption, land grabs, rising prices, massive poverty, and
years of UN/US military occupation. Police and paramilitary forces
continue to attack demonstrators with bullets, teargas, imprisonment,
and increasingly, massacres. These are the conditions that drive people
to leave Haiti to migrate elsewhere, and the conditions that more
than 25,000 refugees have been forcibly returned to, with few means
to support themselves. We call on the US government to treat those
at the Texas border as refugees, and grant them due process to gain
asylum. We also support Haiti’s democratic majority in calling for a
transition government of sali piblik, or “public health,” led by a coalition
of respected and trustworthy people to rebuild governing institutions

before Haiti can have any free and fair elections.

Mesi Anpil/Thank You EBSC! You set an example for all of us.

From your friends and allies in Haiti Action Committee and
Haiti Emergency Relief Fund.
