For the Martin Archery team, this year’s Show even repre-
sented the culmination of years of hard work.

“We beat our goal for new orders,” Joel Miller continued.
“So we performed over our forecast, and we also got some rav-
ing reviews. There is still a certain amount of skepticism in
the marketplace, but we are breaking through it, and it’s been
like a domino effect. We first got the company in 2017, and for
two years we were begging for business and opportunities to
show our technology. I think we have proven ourselves, but
we are certainly still climbing. We are gaining a lot of atten-
tion, and we saw that with everyone coming to our booth to
see our bows and shoot them. I also think a lot of that success
came from Scott Romero, our director of engineering. Scott
has been working hard on some amazing designs, and we
saw that they are starting to get the attention they deserve.”

But the ATA Trade Show is about more than simply buying
and selling goods. The industry’s top companies also see it as
an important opportunity to work with dealers as business
partners and colleagues.

“Our dealer interactions during the ATA Trade Show are
always very productive,” said Corey Consuegra, head of mar-
keting for Arcus Hunting. “We have a couple category lead-
ers like Tink's in the lure/attractant business and Dead Down

Wind in the scent-elimination market, and we always see the Show as an impor-
tant opportunity to inform dealers and educate on them new products. But frankly,
we see the ATA Trade Show as not an opportunity to just sell products to our dealers,
but to work with them as business consultants. We want to help them grow. When
they are healthy and growing, the same generally holds true for us, so we try to use
our face-to-face encounters to consult with them as business partners.”

AN EVOLVING SHOW To further facilitate business, the ATA tried some-

thing new this year by designating the first day of the Show as “Buyer’s Day.” This
change limited traffic on the show floor to streamline interactions between retail-
ers and manufacturers, reducing lines and crowds so vendors and dealers could
focus on order writing and new-product evaluations for the first 9.5 hours of the
three-day Show.

This update reflects the ATA’s efforts to
gather feedback from attendees and apply
that feedback to make improvements to
the Show. This modification, along with
others, were also the result of thought-
ful collaboration between the ATA and its
trusted Board of Directors.

“The first day of the Show was strictly
for business between buyers and sellers,”
said Matt Kormann, CEO and president of
the ATA. “Every one of the Show’s changes
were the product of several years of feed-
back—very consistent feedback from a
lot of participants. They generally said
that they wanted to see the Show become
more conductive to doing business on the
show floor. That is their number one pri-
ority. So we gathered those several years
of surveys and took that data to the Board
of Directors, and collectively we deter-
mined that if we reduced the number of
non-buyers on one day of the Show, then
it would hopefully benefit business-to-
business interactions.

“We won’t know if that worked until we

2020’s Top
Compound Bows
Yep, it’s that time of year again—time to contemplate new bow
By Patrick Meitin models! Compound bows receive continued improvements every
year. Bows first became faster, and then much quieter. Eventually
MARCH 2020 INSIDEARCHERY.COM they combined speed and stealth with improved shootability,
and the latest trend is taking these refined designs and making
them easier to fine tune. Frankly, the speeds generated by many
of today’s compounds made this a practical necessity. The level
of performance we enjoy today has outpaced the average archer’s
tuning skills, and new systems facilitate the kind of advanced
tuning that’s only performed by true experts and those immune
to tedium. Quicker, easier fine tuning also makes the dealer’s life
easier by allowing them to produce clean bullet holes during pa-
per tuning with less time-consuming, trial-and-error tweaking.
All the while, arrow speeds only dreamed of a decade ago are now
commonplace, while less is demanded of the shooter to create
arrow-clattering groups. Bows also arrive hunt ready out of the box

We dispersed the beads in the same
type of environment our customers would
find, and we then collected samples over a
27-day period. We used a chemical labora-
tory at a major university to validate and
measure the amount of critical estrus-
related scents. It turns out that it worked
better than expected. It was still releasing
over 50 percent as much scent on day 27 as
it was on the first day, and there was no
human scent to spook those mature bucks.

Our approach to technology also includes
ideas to limit the spread of disease.
We have natural doe urine that is ATA
Certified. We have added synthetic scents,
and our future products will be focused on
using synthetic scents.
